I'd hold off, personally. I don't know what all is going to happen, but I imagine there will be a lot of callback story lines and gags that you'll need to know about to find as funny.

I thought the end joke was that the whole show was imagined by some future person (a nod the St Elsewhere's ending). But maybe making that person Kenneth says otherwise.
― nickn, Friday, 1 February 2013 06:25 (eleven years ago) link
The girl in the chair was Liz's granddaughter, right?

Yes.
― Big Sambola & The Tailspinners (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 1 February 2013 06:44 (eleven years ago) link
yeah nickn, it was a reference to that, but the gag is not that Kenneth imagined it, but that LL's great-granddaughter pitched 30 Rock to Kenneth as a show idea in like 2120 or whatever (and of course Kenneth is still president of NBC because, as established, he is immortal)
― Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Friday, 1 February 2013 06:54 (eleven years ago) link
I didn't notice the daughter, or don't remember it now in any event.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callback_(comedy)
A callback, in terms of comedy, is a joke which refers to one previously told in the set. The second joke is often presented in a different context than the one which was used in the initial joke.
In television, the term callback has come to mean a joke or line that refers to a previous episode (or sometimes, in rare cases, movies). Particularly in earlier sitcoms - though even until the early 1990s — callbacks were rare and often frowned upon by networks, because they threaten to isolate a viewer who is new to the series, or who missed episodes. Seinfeld was one of the first sitcoms to regularly use callbacks in its scripts, although on a level which would often be missed or disregarded by viewers. More recently 30 Rock has employed callbacks to reference fictitious movies and television programs created within the show. Arrested Development became well known by fans for its regular use of callbacks throughout all of its episodes.[3] Of course, the line between a callback and simple continuity can sometimes be ambiguous. The opening sequence of the season nineteen premiere of The Simpsons calls back to the events in the movie.

This was so great. Probably the best show of the past decade. I really loved how Jenna only got sad when they were taking away her mirror. That shot of her looking at the mirror as it was being taken off the wall, with the weird subtle shifting perspective framing her in it, was really quite a beautiful way to show her world crashing down around her.
