DAN I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE UP CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?????

river wolf, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, this thread is great.

D00D RW LET'S GO THIS SUMMMER WE CAN KAYAK AND BIKE AND OHHH THE DRINKING

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Nobody drinks in the UP.

Dan, I though that was going to be to be your house on Reservation, in which I had plenty of SWED and lovin' experiences myself.

Either way, what would that place go for in Chicago? I know this depends heavily on what part of town, but at least 300K, minimum, right? Out here it'd be 200K or so. Seattle, probably over 700K. Fucking Houghton.

joygoat, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

oh that sounds sweet, dude, but i'm gonna be in the greater mountain west all summer ;_;

river wolf, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

i was also expecting the house on reservation... you should try to talk k4rby and 4nn3 into buying this and turning it into a rental!

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

and i realized saturday night that the l00ms reminded me of nico. that's 'cause they did a cover of 'i'll keep it with mine' which totally made everything click.

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

The house on Reservation is a death trap and I would never encourage anyone to live there.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Although it does have some very entertaining sledding and drunk-people watching opportunities...

So who's made pasties before? I'm going to make some on Sunday because it's been close to 9 months since I've had one.

joygoat, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

i keep forgetting to get my dad's recipe... i'll make some sooner or later, i'm sure.

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

That picture is awesome.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

I've never made pasties. Disgrace.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

What are you going to put in them, the standard stuff? You totally need to make at least one curryfied test pasty.

Totally unrelated: do you think plantain pierogies would be any good?

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I don't know how much the Pewabic street house would go for here in Chicago. Given that it has a real lawn, probably more than your guess. Again, though, dependant on neighborhood.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

plantain pierogies? wiki says folks in tropical regions treat plantains "in much the same way as potatoes," so it may not be a HUGE stretch...

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Pork + plantain in pierogi form = MY CULINARY BREAKTHRU

But probably not.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never really eaten plantains before but I had them at a Dominican place in NYC last month and fried some up to go with my cuban pork shoulder a couple weeks ago.

This could could get close to being some sort of pasty / empanada combination.

joygoat, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...

I am eating Ambassador pizza and drinking Bell's.

dan m, Monday, 24 December 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

i'm so bored that i'm reading threads on ILX! perfect timing on the thread revival, dan.

i found out today that the r41nb0w bar in 1shp3m1ng sells SPARKS thanks to their 'hey snowmobilers, drink sparks!' banner. pretty fucked.

j4sper ridge has a pretty great brown ale on tap right now, btw. worth stopping for if you have to make a drive down this way.

b-rad, Monday, 24 December 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Can I drink Bell's in Chicago or will I have to go a full twelve months sans Bells?

Though actually I miss Ambo pizza more. I can get good beer here but not good pizza. Stupid NW.

joygoat, Monday, 24 December 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

larry's cheating the system and brewing a bunch of bell's beers with the name "kalamazoo beer" for the chicago market. sounds like he'll have an amber, a porter, and an IPA available. bil probably knows a little more about what's up, but here is where i've read it.

b-rad, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

other fun beer news: according to a map on the KBC website, they're starting midwest distribution. still not a fan of the blonde and the amber style rarely does much for me, though i picked up a six of the brown and i think it canned quite well. well enough that i'm bringing four more six packs downstate to give as gifts.

i understand bell's allegiance for the sake of sentimentality, though i still find it hard to be sad if i can't find there stuff when there are so many other good (if not better) beers available. that said, i'm still pulling for three floyd's to start michigan distribution, and it seems like the chicago beer folks treat them as an afterthought. additionally, i often forget how good two hearted is on tap.

b-rad, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually looking forward to finding some Three Floyd's and New Holland beers around Chicago based on your and dan's repeated mentions. The ultra beer nerds at the giant store in Portland assured me that they don't distribute out west at all.

I kind of separate KBC beer from the KBC in general - to me it was all about going out, seeing everyone you know, hanging out, drinking two dollar pints, NOT smelling like smoke, etc. I liked partiular beers but I don't really feel the need to separate them from the place itself.

My burning desire to someday buy a huge storefront building in Calumet or Laurium isn't going away any time soon.

Did I tell you about the block of old-school rowhouses near Harter's party store that was for sale for like fifty grand? Not each, total for all four. Like something that would be in Brooklyn for EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS.

Yoopers: please provide me with arguments I can set forth to my parents in favor of retiring to the UP instead of North Dakota. Thank you in advance.

carl agatha, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

At least every other summer I suffer driving across the horrible nothing of ND just to get to the UP if that says anything.

I really have nothing good to say about ND at all, though I am well aware that many people probably would feel that way about the UP.

joygoat, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

Also this thread seems to really be "Jeff and Dan post on ilx instead of using IM"

joygoat, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

I really can't imagine what the shit they would do in North Dakota. My dad is a bigtime hunter/fisherperson, but my mom likes restaurants and the pleasures of (small town) civilization. I think she would flip out Jack Torrence style after about three months.

Since I have been living in Wisconsin, I have noticed this question coming up repeatedly. Sconnites are OBSESSED.

Why doesn't Michigan's Upper Peninsula belong to Wisconsin? https://t.co/pFKTCAa4HX

(the real answer is the UP is too good for them)

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Thursday, 11 April 2024 19:29 (two years ago)

This timely revival allows me to share the bit about Bessemer, Michigan that I noticed in Wikipedia yesterday:

This section was made by somebody who lives in bessemer. However because of that, this part does not currently have citations.
Logging and fishing is a large part of the culture of Bessemer, Logging because people use wood stoves to heat their homes in the winter, And fishing for the reason of sport & as an hobby.

In vehicles, Electric cars are completely out of the question. As there are no electric car charging stations. And also there are a large portion of pickup trucks, they are good as they are easy to throw wood onto without damaging the truck, while also not being a hefty semi truck. So in that way it is perfect for logging. And its also not as small as a SUV which also has an roof in the way.

Hunting is also another part of the culture, both for sport and for the food that comes out of it.

Another part of the culture is how Bessemer is more attached to its locacllity to the UP rather then the state of michigan. Also see the Superior (proposed U.S. state) article. The citizens take pride in how they are locals and how the town is not a corporatized city, As they like the towns overall atmosphere.

Bessemer is a second-rate Ironwood.

Clearly you need to add an edit
