I tend to love any bitter liquor, especially when mixed with a sweet liquor, like Cointreau (more Campari than Cointreau, please). Other bitter liquors I should know about?

NO BARTENDER I've ever asked knows what a sidecar is. "What's in that?" Oh crap, now I have to tell them I don't know what's in one but I saw the recipe in a cocktail book once and it looked good & yummy but fuck if I remember anything, and oh I liked the name...too... "Oh, no worries bartender, I'll just have a ginger ale w/whiskey."

No sloe gin fizzes either. And last time John ordered Chivas on the rocks, he got Sauza tequila. Stupid crappy bars.

Every bar in SF knows what a sidecar is.

Every Abbott is within 100 miles of bars that are only crappy and know how to mix four kinds of well boozes with coke, tonic, or (if you're in an especially nice one) ginger ale. And they'll usually open your budweiswer for you and sometimes give you fresh glasses, too, if you ask a couple times.

Which is why I drink at home.

Is Campari served in skanky old public houses or only in classy establishments?

In the US, both but only on the coasts.

I generally have decent luck asking barkeeps what they like to pour. Ask for a drink with campari and see what you get.

Campari is a red liquor. It's quite bitter, and extremely delicious.

The staff type of pub I am going to tonight will probably give me a look of "whatthafuk?"

I haven't had either, but I think that if you find bitter tastes appealing, you may like campari.

Bitter tastes...so are you supposed to mix it with anything? What would happen if you mixed it with soda water?

yeah, it has sweet vermouth in it which balances the bitterness.

if you're not in the mood for the full hit of a negroni you can make a campari americano - a negroni but with soda water in place of gin.

i find campari often tastes a little too much like marmalade for me these days, though i still drink it on the regular (i'm drinking a campari-soda right now!)

can't imagine finding it bitter, unless you also find marmalade bitter.

Well, I mean, it's bitter - it's an amaro! - but it's... sweet-bitter. (one of my housemates once said he found it too sweet and syrupy, like cough medicine, which i didn't really understand)

I keep meaning to branch out into the other amari - amaro ramazotti, say, or that one that's made from artichokes or something.

i was going to post the video for Jennifer Hudson's "Spotlight" where she bails on her possessive boyfriend and goes to a club where they ONLY SERVE CAMPARI, but the edit on Vevo has significantly fewer shots of red glasses and campari bottles.

I've often wondered if hops are among Campari's secret ingredients; that earthy, tannic, oily bitterness reminds me of US IPAs.
