Thai-phoon is a chain and is also located at the Pentagon Square new urbanist downtown next to pentagon city mall (that is enough to put me off). the best thai in the DC area is Duangrats, with prices to match, but it is out in Bailey's crossroads way out in the burbs...

Bailey's Crossroad's is way out in the burbs? It's like 5 minutes across the bridge! Traffic can be mightmarish, but for dinner it wouldn't be too bad. And if you shun Bailey's Crossroads, you're missing Neisha Thai, Peking Duck, etc etc.
Then just a mile or so up the road you get to Eden Center, which is an awesome Vietnamese "mall." You can smoke in the mall!

JBR, believe it or not, this was on my rejected McSweeney's list. (They didn't know what they had, the bastards!) Along with Thai Cobb and Thai-ger Woods (unless Woods decides he wants to own Black Thai Affair instead).
Also, for a ballpark vendor: Thai Goes to the RunnerCaterer at Elton John concerts: Thai-ny Dancer

Is Thairish still around? Owner is not in fact half-Irish -- he told me he made up the name and then came up with the story.

there is, or was, a chinese place I used to see signs for sometimes called "Hard Wok Buffet", which I liked because it was right on the borderline where you can't be 100% sure it's supposed to be a pun
