anybody find that this is just too much meat all the time? i'm going to be trying to flip the meat/vegetable ratio a bit.

arby's, Friday, 25 January 2013 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

yeah at xmas my family was excitedly talking about quinoa a bunch and i had to drop the quinoa bomb on them

tity boi historian (ciderpress), Friday, 25 January 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

I'm going to start this officially on Monday for at least 30 days. Have been sort of heading towards it since Christmas but wanted to get more settled into the semester / be done with traveling.

Of course this week has been spent eating granola, the rest of the yogurt, rice, pizza from the new and only decent pizza place around, toast for breakfast, etc.

joygoat, Friday, 25 January 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

i'm doing a less strict thing where i still eat beans, which helps a lot w/ variety and preventing meat fatigue

eggplant is a good meat substitute too imo

tity boi historian (ciderpress), Friday, 25 January 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

I generally eat only 4-6 oz meat/egg per meal with a massive amount of veg, which seems about right for me.

Jaq, Friday, 25 January 2013 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

been lurking here and trying this out without getting too strict. loving it! i always thought i was hopeless in the kitchen, but i'm keeping it simple and doing just fine.

i'm losing weight too, even though that's not what i'm going for at all. it's mostly because my appetite isn't as voracious as usual, but i also inevitably get a little lazy about preparing meals and just go without or settle for a smaller meal of leftovers.

boss & toss (lou), Friday, 25 January 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'm still doing this. I've fucked the exercise and have been sedentary for the last four weeks :(

The way I keep up with veggies is to make a two big veggie dishes a day and then eat them for several days as leftovers. On any given meal I'll have about four of: baked kale, savoy cabbage coleslaw, collard greens and tomatoes, grated carrot salad, turmeric roasted cauliflower, baked broccoli, spinach salad, cucumber salad, celery soup, red cabbage in a pot with vinegar, etc.

I've been relying more heavily on restaurant food than I should be, at times, but have done a p good job of finding decent paleo friendly stuff to order (e.g. big salad with pork from Chipotle for work lunch). I don't think I could keep on it otherwise.

dmr, Friday, 25 January 2013 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

I use this thread for variety/food inspiration and out of curiosity about ppl and their foods, but I have to say, for the past two weeks I've barely been home one night a week--many days I'm only in my apartment for 2 or 3 hours a day (that I'm not sleeping)--and there is NO WAY to keep up with a diet that can't be picked up in Midtown.

xp haha yes!

For recipe recommendations I usually buy a big bag of [some nice looking veg] and then google "best kohlrabi ever!" and see what happens

"Best swiss chard ever" and "best broccoli ever" produced some fantastic recipes, might I add:

(That swiss chard takes a while though, I watched the entirety of Wayne's World while preparing it)

i actually don't eat that much meat. For breakfast I just have executive coffee, a salad at lunch (with SOME meat), and then dinner is sometimes meat, sometimes not. The other day I just had sauteed portobello mushrooms with avocado and creme fraiche.

homosexual II, Friday, 25 January 2013 22:17 (thirteen years ago)

This week though I have been incredibly distracted and skipped a few meals... which really bumped up the weight loss! I guess IF is a good idea for me.

homosexual II, Friday, 25 January 2013 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

I really want to try that butter coffee thing. I'm v curious

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 25 January 2013 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

i don't see myself eating any other way again. this works just too great for me.

ω (carne asada), Friday, 25 January 2013 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

Survived 3 days of a tradeshow - lots of intermittent fasting, took a can of coconut milk along for coffee, brought some Paleokits for snacks/breakfast and the last Larabar we had in the house, plus a small container of coconut butter buttons. The hotel restaurant had a good cobb salad and also plain olive oil and red wine vinegar for dressing.

The hardest thing - not having wine with the rest of the table; it smelled sooo good. Since we just finished a second whole30, I think a glass or two of something alcoholic/week will be added back in first.

Jaq, Friday, 1 February 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

maria and i have been going on and off the paleo wagon. but even off we seem to be making more healthy choices now. we are back on now. i just have to keep reminding myself how great i felt in those initial weeks of doing it. and i have kept the weight off that i lost. consistently 15 pounds lighter than when i started this last year.

big problem was buying snacks/dessert/non-paleo stuff for the kida and then...eating that stuff. so, just buying less of that stuff and making the kids eat some damn fruit. it helps that cyrus is addicted to seaweed snacks and i don't want any of that.

scott seward, Friday, 1 February 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

Not having stuff we aren't eating around has really helped. I cleared a lot of it out during the first week of January, stored the things that will keep, pitched out opened stuff, etc. Out of sight out of mind is working for the moment.

Jaq, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

why is wine not paleo? I feel like all these odd prohibitions would add up to some very popular and lucrative paleo variations. (paleo + potatos, etc...)

Philip Nunez, Friday, 1 February 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

in the stricter versions of paleo all alcohol is out, period. wine is more paleo than beer though (especially if it's dry & not sweet)

dmr, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

It's just not on the Whole30, which is more of a low inflammation diet than most other paleo.

Jaq, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

whole30 is also no sweeteners, period. Where most other paleo is okay with honey/maple syrup, that kind of thing.

Jaq, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

i actually brought a jar of really good local honey to the store in case i have a craving for sweets in the afternoon. which is usually when i start craving sweets. i figure a quick spoonful as needed and i'm back on track.

scott seward, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

for real though one spoonful of raw deerfield wildflower honey and all thoughts of a snickers bar disappear.

scott seward, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

Snickers bars are my office bete noire, too. :( Because they have them in our vending machine, mostly. Today though I am having a pear!

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

Dry ciders are popular with paleo folks too

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

my vending machine actually has one paleo snack: plantain chips

dmr, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

I said from the start I wasn't gonna quit drinking but if I have a couple beers I feel like I lose most of the benefits. so mostly been sticking to red wine.

dmr, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Ooh, dry cider - that's on for tonight then. I've been buying the Inka plantain chips occasionally. They're tasty and nicely crunchy and might be good to dip in guacamole.

Jaq, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't really been drinking, but last weekend I did have a few glasses of veuve clicquot, because I couldn't resist

I am off sweeteners all together, too. Even stevia.

homosexual II, Saturday, 2 February 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

I fuck with beer.

ω (carne asada), Saturday, 2 February 2013 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

hey so despite eating 80% of my calories from fat, my cholesterol numbers look pretty awesome!

pleased about this

homosexual II, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

Nuked a jar of coconut manna for 45 sec, stirred in 1/2 tsp of vanilla, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, a little salt. Poured out onto parchment paper and put in the fridge until set (turns matte-finish). Used a pizza cutter at first, but then just broke it up. Delicious! Second batch is just vanilla flavored, poured over apple juice infused dried cranberries (from Steve's Original), lightly sprinkled with salt - cooling down now.

Jaq, Friday, 8 February 2013 01:18 (thirteen years ago)

so despite being paleo and eating a lot of red meat and stuff, I am anemic. this is worrisome.

homosexual II, Saturday, 16 February 2013 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

oh no :/

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 February 2013 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

Does that mean taking iron pills, or something else?

Jaq, Saturday, 16 February 2013 02:35 (thirteen years ago)

doc thinks celiac possibly

and yeah, iron supplements. unless I am celiac, in which case I might have to get iron shots.

homosexual II, Saturday, 16 February 2013 02:44 (thirteen years ago)

:-( I hope you find out soon that it's not.

Jaq, Saturday, 16 February 2013 04:01 (thirteen years ago)

If you're on the paleo diet, maybe I don't understand but aren't you NOT eating wheat??

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Saturday, 16 February 2013 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

Pardon to interrupt the gnawing and grunting, but I was impressed by the committment bordering on obsession required to put together this dense 9 1/2 hour jeremiad against paleo.

Sanpaku, Saturday, 16 February 2013 05:58 (thirteen years ago)

Livestrong has this to say about paleo and anemia:

Avoiding grains without making up for the B vitamin lack in other ways could lead to serious B vitamin deficiencies. B vitamin deficiencies can lead to skin issues, anemia and poor oral health. If you choose the Paleo diet, consider supplementing with a multivitamin supplement that contains 100 percent of your daily value of B vitamins.

Here they're talking mostly about B6, B9, and B12. Heavy meat eaters are likely getting plenty of B12, but B6 (pyridoxine) and B9 (folate) might present problems.
Note the synthetic folic acid in supplements isn't biologically equivalent to the folate from greens (it was recently discovered we lack the enzyme that allows rats to interconvert the two) and folic acid has raised a lot of concerns WRT carcinogenesis. Then again, iron supplementation has some serious side effects, too. This handy site of food high in vitamins might be of help for dietary sources of yer Bs.

Sanpaku, Saturday, 16 February 2013 06:36 (thirteen years ago)

oh, I suspect I've been anemic for a while. I've been a chronic ice chewer/eater for like 3 years, so it's been at least that long (long before I was paleo)

homosexual II, Saturday, 16 February 2013 06:55 (thirteen years ago)

eat liver!

brownie, Saturday, 16 February 2013 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

I am not eating wheat, no. But I guess the villi in your intestines can take up to 18 months to be repaired for proper absorption!

and yeah, I've been frying chicken livers and eating a few of those a day.

homosexual II, Saturday, 16 February 2013 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

Did not see a Mediterranean Diet thread so:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/pour-on-the-olive-oil-big-study-finds-mediterranean-style-diet-cuts-heart-attack-stroke-risk/2013/02/25/8b83f40e-7f3f-11e2-a671-0307392de8de_story.html?hpid=z3

Mediterranean meant lots of fruit, fish, chicken, beans, tomato sauce, salads, and wine and little baked goods and pastries

Two followed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil (4 tablespoons a day) or with walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds (a fistful a day).

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

article lost me after the ancel keys mention

homosexual II, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

It's like waving a red flag at a bull.

xp:
BTW, its probably not the olive oil, which is just as atherogenic as saturated fat in animal studies, worse than fish or canola in endothelial function, and offered hardly any effect on mortality (in a multiple regression model) in the big recent Greek study (see table 2).

Present Greeks eat plenty of olive oil, and have the highest obesity, diabetes and hypertension in the EU. Most of the benefits seen my Keyes et al, especially in Crete, appear to have been from WWII and just post-war dietary pattern, when people were poor, walked miles every day, and ate mostly bread, home-grown lentils/vegetables/fruit, and fish, and couldn't afford olive oil or red meat on a regular basis.

Sanpaku, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

Oops, I meant table 3 in the 2003 NEJM study.

Sanpaku, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's mostly bullshit
