im basically like hills only now, no incline im just not inclined to run on that, in min im gonna do ~7mi thats m/l out and back over a big hill
― lag∞n, Sunday, 20 January 2013 18:54 (thirteen years ago)
harbl u should do lifting and running, theyre v complimentary, even just like hop on the treadmill for 20mins after u lift
― lag∞n, Sunday, 20 January 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
i do pull ups and a lil core stuff after i run is my vers, pull ups are kinda like lifting weights except youre lifting yrself think abt it
― lag∞n, Sunday, 20 January 2013 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
yeah. i'm too weak to do pull-ups! bc i'm a girl. i'm working on it though. the schedule just says this week 20 min run during the week and 25 min on saturday so i can def handle that.
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:29 (thirteen years ago)
ha yeah not everyone can be as ripped as me, and if you were it might shake yr flimsy gender constructs to their core, anyway you could always do assisted pull up if you want
― lag∞n, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
how do you all run when the pavements are icy? it's got to the point where walking is a bit of a calf workout even on gritted pavements. just wait til conditions are good again?
― lex pretend, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
just keep yr head above yr feet dawg
― lag∞n, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)
take little steps
^this. I actually find it easy to run on ice if I go slow. Problem is stopping at stop lights. I slip almost every time.
― Jeff, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)
I ran on Saturday in v icy conditions, use sidestreets and run on the road, assuming your area is fairly quiet or it's a quiet time. And get into a park area for as long as you can, I found on Saturday the grass in the park where I run was firmer and generally more pleasant to run on than usual.
― Hutton dressed as Lahm (LocalGarda), Monday, 21 January 2013 16:58 (thirteen years ago)
Running in my city sucks right now, esp when it's dark. Went ice skating in the weekend, hope some lakes have frozen over next weekend so I can make some longer trips
― willem, Monday, 21 January 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)
So I seem to have hurt my back. No, not running or working out in anyway. I was changing clothes. I just bent over slightly and got a shocking pain in my lower back. I couldn't move and sat on the couch most of yesterday. Seems to be better today, but everything is tight as hell. Not good timing since my half marathon is on Saturday. I've already skipped two days worth of running and I'm going through withdraw HARD. It's the first time in weeks I've gone more than 1 day without running or some sort of workout.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:56 (thirteen years ago)
yarg, sorry man. Chiropractor? I hurt my back a few weeks and was amazed at how quickly I improved after seeing a chiropractor.
― Z S, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:57 (thirteen years ago)
The last time I went to a chiropractor I nearly got into fight with her. Never again.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 19:59 (thirteen years ago)
haha, why?
My recent visit was my first ever chiropractor experience, and I was very happy with the results.
― Z S, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 20:00 (thirteen years ago)
I exaggerate, but she was doing lots of quick and sudden movements that in hindsight were incredibly dangerous (yes, whip my neck to the side as hard as you can!) I ended the session early and told her I was never coming back. This was many years ago before I had a more skeptical outlook on such medical practices.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 January 2013 20:04 (thirteen years ago)
today was the first day of running group. i was thinking of skipping it because it was 21º and it was at 8 am but i did it and i'm glad. it was pretty fun. i don't think everyone showed up but i was second fastest.
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Saturday, 26 January 2013 14:58 (thirteen years ago)
Half marathon today. 1:38. PR by 17 minutes. Exhausting.
― Jeff, Saturday, 26 January 2013 18:50 (thirteen years ago)
wow! that's a huge margin of improvement!
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 26 January 2013 19:38 (thirteen years ago)
I hadn't ran a half in nearly 2 years. Amazing the improvements you can make if you just keep at it consistently.
― Jeff, Saturday, 26 January 2013 21:41 (thirteen years ago)
that's great, job well done!
― tobo73, Sunday, 27 January 2013 00:16 (thirteen years ago)
Signed up for the Grand Rapids Marathon in October. Here I go again.
― Jeff, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:23 (thirteen years ago)
I'm back up to 50 mile weeks. Not totally acclimated to it yet, I'm tired all the time. I'll keep it up though, this is going to become my new base mileage. Surprisingly, I remain uninjured, except for a few aches here and there. It has really taken about 3 years of running to get my body used to this kind of mileage.
― Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 14:53 (thirteen years ago)
Any one ever run a Ragnar relay? Looks like I'm officially on a team now for Madison to Chicago Ragnar.
― Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:13 (thirteen years ago)
It has really taken about 3 years of running to get my body used to this kind of mileage.
Weird huh? I feel like its taken me about 5 yrs to get to where I am now: three or four 6 milers and a 10-12 miler per week. Seems like it shouldn't take that long for someone in pretty decent shape to begin with. I only recently got over the hurdle of running 2 or 3 consecutive days.
― tobo73, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)
I think it just less so about being physically fit, but just getting your body used to the abuse of pounding the pavement for so many miles.
― Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
Agree-- and I can't see any reason for me to put myself through that. I always stop long before my body becomes acclimated to any kind of abuse. That doesn't even sound like fun! I'm just in it for the fresh air and the opportunity to move quickly, listen to music, and be by myself in nature.
I guess I have probably said that like 1000x but it's always worth mentioning that not all people who run are goal-oriented.
― and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 8 February 2013 18:16 (thirteen years ago)
Sure, I know tons of them. Even run with them.
― Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 20:18 (thirteen years ago)
My Ragnar team is going to be non-competitive, we're just doing it to finish and have fun.
― Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 20:19 (thirteen years ago)
I am worn out! I've run 193 miles over the last 30 days, I think I need to cut back for a couple of weeks.
― Jeff, Sunday, 24 February 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
i'm not looking forward to this 5k in 2 weeks. i can run slowly for a pretty long time but i remember how hard the last one was (although it was 90 degrees) and i just barely broke 30 min.
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 24 February 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)
i want to do better, not worse, and it's gonna be torture either way is what i mean
30 minutes is pretty good, I had a hard time breaking that in high school
― los blue jeans, Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:56 (thirteen years ago)
I'm taking my friends spot in a half marathon in a couple weeks, if I stop posting around that time then look for my stuff on ebay
― los blue jeans, Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:57 (thirteen years ago)
doing this http://www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k.aspx. am on week 4.
― thomasintrouble, Sunday, 3 March 2013 11:47 (thirteen years ago)
building up nicely for my first half marathon now, it's four weeks tomorrow. i missed about 8 days through illness but just did 12k in 57 minutes which is much faster than i'm used to. not sure if speed is likely to tail off hugely over the 13 miles, but even if I allowed myself to do the last section in v slow 10-minute miles i reckon i'm on course for a pretty good time.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Saturday, 9 March 2013 13:01 (thirteen years ago)
and the holy grail of beating my brother :)
5k was today, times aren't up yet but i didn't do as badly as i thought i would. probably like 5 seconds over 30 min. i barely ran at all the past few weeks.
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 19:04 (thirteen years ago)
i'm not too discouraged by the slowness of it because if i'm in about the same shape i was in late last june when i could run about that time, i will do a lot better in the same race this year
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 19:07 (thirteen years ago)
yay harbl - hope you enjoyed it!
my marathon training was badly derailed last month cos i munched my foot playing football with my children. couldn't walk on it without pain for a couple of weeks and ending up doing no running at all for the whole of february. did a bit of biking but was mostly very slack. oops! back on it now though, five weeks from today to get as fit as i can. can forget all about going for a time so i'm concentrating on putting in long sunday runs with a semi-long run midweek just to build endurance as much as possible. rest of the time is basically resting or easy stuff. 18 miles today and not too painful but i know my legs will be wrecked now until wednesday. well done on yr mileage jeff, that was about what i should have doing...
― acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 10 March 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
29:58.3, so a .8 second PR for me then. i think i can chop a couple minutes off that by end of june if i'm not lazy.
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
aw nice work!
― acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:30 (thirteen years ago)
Congrats harbl!
― Jeff, Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
thanks. one thing i'm sure would help is dropping a couple pounds. i also weighed about 12 lbs less this time last year. but i gained some of it from lifting, which is probably why i didn't lose speed despite not running much.
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
I've been holding steady at 45 to 50 mile weeks for the last 6 weeks. In fact, I've missed only one workout in the last 6 weeks, because of 9" of stupid snow. I've seen great improvements, not only in the mileage I'm able to run, but also in speed. My easy pace is now consistently around 8:20 m/miles and my speed workouts I'm going down as long as 6:00 m/miles. My long run is topping out at around 15 or 16 miles every Saturday. Only pain these days is some lingering foot pain, but nothing serious at all, just nagging. For the first time in my life I feel like I actually may be in decent shape.
― Jeff, Monday, 11 March 2013 12:03 (thirteen years ago)
my brother ran a half marathon today and averaged 6:59 miles so now i can't say my slowness is due to genetics, just lack of hard work
― veryupsetmom (harbl), Saturday, 16 March 2013 22:33 (thirteen years ago)
did 9.5 miles yesterday, another step on the way for my half-marathon, which is three weeks today.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Sunday, 17 March 2013 12:44 (thirteen years ago)
you're well on track then, one more long one and you can start easing back a little i reckon. horrible 21-miler for me this morning - cold and wet, wind in my face seemingly the whole way, dodgy guts, legs were totally spent and my head was just gone by the end of it. couldn't wait for it to end and have just felt horrid since i stopped. there's still a part of me that enjoys the grimness though, a little bit of pride in feeling so bloody awful and knowing that you've really pushed yourself there.
jeff, it sounds like you're in great shape, i love that feeling of really getting on a roll (not that i've had it very often). gets to a point where you're waking up every day and just feeling like you really want to run. and yes, your speed starts really improving too, slow runs start feeling so much easier, it's kind of hard to hold yourself back. anyhow, keep on it!
― acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 17 March 2013 17:44 (thirteen years ago)
May hit 40 degrees here this weekend, but then may get another snow storm. Winter sucks but I'm optimistic that this will be the last of it. Then I'm taking my running to the next level. Wherever that is.
― Jeff, Friday, 22 March 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
i can't even remember when i gave up running, but i need to start again.
