Charles N'Zogbia is powered by some kind of rune which is activated by proximity to 18th place in the Premier League

I assumed ZS' homeless thread yesterday would be about that, but seems unlikely now I think about it

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 January 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

But yeah, aw. Though how much spare food would one couple have?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 January 2013 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

Article says that it was from a sandwich shop. Shop was closing and throwing out the day's food. They asked to have it instead to give to the homeless.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 19 January 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

I was at Swindon's home ground tonight to clear the snow off the pitch and was greeted by over 75 fans and 8 staff members including the manager Paolo Di Canio, he had been there since 10.30 I got there at around 14.00 and the pitch wasn't even a third clear, I and every other incredible volunteer worked 5 hours non stop shovelling the snow off the pitch, and at around 19.00 we had a delivery of around 60 pizza came which had all been bought by Di Canio, and we all stopped for 30 minutes and had a great chat with the manager.

Hey futbol fans, I have a noob question as someone who's started watching a lot of matches (games?) in the baseball offseason. I see strikers trying to work the ball deep in toward the goal, and often they seem to pass up a reasonable shot to try to get just a bit closer, likely as not getting their pocket picked by the defense before getting off any shot at all. Has there ever been a team that tried the strategy of firing off more low-percentage shots on goal from the edge of the penalty area instead of fewer higher-percentage shots? Did it go hilariously wrong or has there ever been success in this method? Should I go away now?

Jah Creature (WilliamC), Sunday, 20 January 2013 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

that isn't really a viable strategy because players who can reliably score from 20+ yards are rather rare, and it's more usual to

have maybe one player who can do that, and they will be accomodated to some extent

It looks like no one updated the Serie A thread today, so I'll just say that Paul Pogba scored two great goals from distance today, and was generally excellent filling in for Pirlo, as Juventus beat Udinese 4-0.

boxall, Sunday, 20 January 2013 04:20 (thirteen years ago)

Hi William. I suspect you're probably being fooled to some extent by camera angles and so forth, so that what looks like a reasonable shooting opportunity either: (i) isn't, because the player is 30+ yards out and the space between him and the goal is occupied well enough to make the chance of scoring through it negligible; or (ii) isn't, because although the player is a bit closer, he's had to put himself off-balance to get there, and is under too much spatial pressure to have time to set himself to take an effective shot.

If he does work a situation where he's reasonably close-to-goal and has both got a fraction more time and the defence slightly disorganised, most players will shoot immediately I reckon. The ones who don't are usually either chronically short of confidence (Torres, Arsenal), chronically over-confident (Taarabt) or else genuinely good enough that he rightly fancies his chances of making a better chance (Suarez).

I have often wondered why nobody aims to score more via deflections, but the only player who seems able to make that work on the regular is Lampard.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 January 2013 07:24 (thirteen years ago)

it's wasteful of possession, and most managers aren't gonna look favourably on a guy who regularly gives the ball away thru speculative long shots. depending on a team's position in the game the risk/reward ratio changes - if you're 5 minutes down and behind then players are much more likely to have a go

Tottenham is only just down the road from me and there's quite a lot of snow here right now - I wouldn't be surprised if the match is off today

Might be a decent chance of the man in a parka scoring a ticket today?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 January 2013 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

even more so if it's called off

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 January 2013 12:06 (thirteen years ago)

It was pretty snowy yesterday and I think every Premiership game still went ahead?

After all that Ashley Cole talk in midweek it looks like he's signed a new deal at Chelsea.

Oh and Djibril Cisse has fucked off to Qatar.

Almost zero chance, I'm afraid: Spurs have cut the United allocation to half the normal size.
