she is good in prairie home companion

Yeah she's been good in a couple of things but I guess I'm not really seeing how she's supposedly any more promising than like 20 other actresses of her age

hey godard is shooting his new (3D!!) film with SLR still cameras.
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
Camera choice, unless it's 35mm or 65mm, now means basically nothing wrt production value/budget. The Alexa is like $60,000 (and if you've been working for a while you know someone who has one), and DSLRs are often chosen for their size and aesthetic instead of cost. In fact, because they're not video cameras, all the bullshit you have to go through to make them work like video cameras can make them more expensive to use than proper video cameras.
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:06 (thirteen years ago)
she's great in mean girls, but so are like 5 other actresses, nearly all of whom have had much better creers since then (poor lacey chabert)
in fairness, Lacey Chabert had an entire career before Mean Girls

I think Lacey Chabert is in a different Hallmark or Lifetime movie every week -- she might not be a movie star, but she has much more of a steady career than Lindsay.
― Ulna (Nicole), Thursday, 17 January 2013 21:14 (thirteen years ago)
Oh my god I work at a place that largely rents out DSLRs for video and it's just such a constant nightmare that I spend half my time with clients making little head jerks towards the FS100s.

Renting out DSLRs?! C'mon if you are a serious indie filmmaker you should own your own damn camera, even if you had to steal it (from a rental shop perhaps, lol).
― Frobisher the (Viceroy), Tuesday, 22 January 2013 06:28 (thirteen years ago)
And I don't mean something like a 4K-resolution Alexa camera or whatever. Thats pretty non-indie.
― Frobisher the (Viceroy), Tuesday, 22 January 2013 06:29 (thirteen years ago)
Ellis was a bit offended by The New York Times Magazine cover story about the film, which said that he didn’t like the final product. “That was wrong, as was the fact that we were a bunch of losers trying to get our careers on track,” he says, referring to himself and Paul Schrader, the director of the movie.

i thought she handled it pretty well, outside of the persistent mugging at the audience for approval

is this what people mean when they say someone is "taking it on the chin"? i've never been 100% sure what that idiom means tbh.
― and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:50 (thirteen years ago)
I am sure LL's taken it on the chin before but I suspect even she's sensible enough no to do it on network television.
― hoda nkotb (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 14:56 (thirteen years ago)
iirc it means you let your guard down and someone landed a perfect punch
― jokestoldforu (gr8080), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:17 (thirteen years ago)
It means you take a hard punch w/o complaint. LL must know she's got some 'punches' coming her way. Taking them well will stand to her credit.
― But I'm having so much foehn! (Michael White), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
Those are two different things, but the latter is more like what I thought it meant. That's what it seemed like she was doing there.
― and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)
I thought it means keep your chin up, don't lose your resolve, and here's a friendly faux-punch to the chin, "Go get 'em, tiger".
As an example of non double-entendre usage.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
I always thought it was a boxing analogy. Sometimes you have to take a punch. Do so stoically.
― But I'm having so much foehn! (Michael White), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
That probably is correct. This is an instance where any of us could probably google and look for the real answer but it is far more entertaining to hear everyone's interpretations of it.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:46 (thirteen years ago)
she didn't really take it on the chin, that was more complaining that she wasn't ready for the punch
― ogmor, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
1. Lit. to stand up to something adverse, such as criticism. (Fig. on taking a direct punch to the head in boxing.) They laid some blunt criticism on him, but he took it on the chin. I knew he could take it on the nose. 2. Fig. to receive the full brunt of something. Why do I have to take it on the chin for something I didn't do? If you did it, you have to learn to take it on the chin.
― sleepingsignal, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
So could it be said that aside from the obsequious mugging, she took it on the chin during that interview?

maybe. i just think, as a general rule, i'm not a fan of his smug, sarcastic kind of humor. i watched an old interview he did with harmony korine recently and something about letterman's wry attitude toward korine's eccentricity rubbed me the wrong way, idk. also i, for what ever reason, pretty much always find myself rooting for lindsay lohan.
