I could taste the death! I made one bad move early on and one pointless move in the middle and by all rights you should have had me, but when you moved your king so that it wasn't protecting your bishop then it was all lost for you. I had to keep remembering that you were a move or two away from mating me, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm not sure moving your bishop would have ultimately helped, compared to moving your king to d8. I would have had to take your bishop and then you could have taken my rook with your king.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

more hott chess action! challenge me! i'm JulesB74...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, bring it on!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure I used to be better than Stevem! I don't seem to be any more, it's like he's been practicing or something.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't seem to be e-mailing me anymore when people move. Hrm.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris is good + I am tired = humiliation.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, I used your method of grabbing some small advantage and then evening the playing field until it became a big advantage. If you had pushed that pawn instead of capturing with it, I would have pushed my pawn (putting you in check) and then I wasn't entirely sure but I felt that would have put me in a pretty strong place. Of course you made life much easier for me instead.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone have any recommendations for interactive chess sites that teach you strategy/openings/endgame stuff etc? i was looking at an openings site but found it confusing. i like the chess problems here, which are cool because you can just see what's going on with little chess puzzles, rather than dealing with confusing annotations, the names for different moves, all that crap.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew you must have been studying!;)

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

not much, really, but i'd like to, if i can find non-intimidating websites to learn from...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.chessops.com is pretty great for openings, except that it doesn't ever tell you why an opening move is bad, just "you can do better than that".

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a pairing here that's closely matched? I've just been killed by Casuistry for the second time, without ever feeling I was in the game, and the same thing will shortly happen with Ken C. Meanwhile I've beaten Stevem four times with no problems. I need to find someone in between.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But you're the only one who's drawn with Ken!

I feel kinda closely matched by Casuistry, but he's been improving and I haven't, so it may no longer be the case.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Chop chop Chu!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

some of us have a daytime job!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

GP, I've improved to the point where I might be equal to you, at best. I only beat you that once.

Jamie, have you played Julia yet?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'll do that once I get the chance to resign against Ken C (I've got six games on the go).

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar tells me you are all quite good.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fresh blood! Bring it on!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just joined redhotpawn. I used to play to county standard when I was a teenager but I've hardly touched a piece since, so what my standard is these days is anyone's guess :)

Si Carter (Si Carter), Saturday, 30 April 2005 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I visited the Mazeworks page. I'm confused. I don't see the "h" file on the board. Is it supposed to be like that or is it something to do with my browser? For today's problem, for example, I don't see either side's king. Is it supposed to look like that?

I'm enjoying chessops though.

Si Carter, what's your redhotpawn name?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Mazeworks isn't working for me either. Are you on a Mac, Sundar?

C'mon, bring it on, my RHP name is casuistry and I would like more games please!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The notebook is totally the key to this.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

RHP Name = pwn66

Si Carter (Si Carter), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't played with the notebook yet, does it let you jot down your devious plans?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup! You can Not Forget Stuff You've Seen, it is aceness. (I have only used it as of like 2 days ago though) (I ws also until now deeply paranoid you cld see and writing in kinda code!)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i was so happy with finally beating captainzep i forgot how to play

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem with playing a bad move is that, if you immediately see an interesting alternate move after you play it, you can't easily follow that variation's consequences to the end.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's totally my fault, I thought I had gone through all the variations but I forgot about that one. I'm not quite sure I'm dead yet, but I was really looking forward to the draw.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I've changed my mind about that allegedly clever move I could have done. Hmmmm.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i was so happy with finally beating captainzep i forgot how to play
-- ken c (pykachu10...), May 3rd, 2005 7:39 PM. (later)

I think I just got lucky in the first game. My rating is down to 1311, Ken's is 1441.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaargh! How did I just lose that???

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on a Mac, yeah. I think I want to prepare a bit more before I face you again, Casuistry.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, whenever you're ready, I'm game.

Zep, I was thinking if you did 43. Kf1 you would have been able to draw me (since I would have been wiggling my rook and king around to keep you in check) but I've been playing around with it and after 43. Kf1 Rf2 comes 44. ...Rxf5 and it should be possible to pluck off the rest of your pawns before (or, at worst, immediately after) they queen. And a rook is enough to mate. (Here's the game.)

(Beyond that, 6. f3 seems like it was an iffy move, even though it is superficially similar to what I did with 3. ...d6, but moving the d pawn helps my development and control of the center in ways that your f pawn only dreams about. 6. d3 seems like a much better choice there.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not letting any endgame fannydangle come between me and Ken's scalp, this time. It WILL be mine. Maybe. Kinda.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i'll finally get to retire.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still terrible at chess.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Casuistry and CaptainZep are officially too good for me.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I am at the point where, failing any opening game errors, I am evenly matched with GP, I think. He might be a smidge better.

I have to say, I'm completely disappointed about the blunder that ended our last game, which was quite the game. I was curious how the rest of the game was going to wind out. I think I had a slight advatage of position and time but even a single rook is a menace and bishop + knight mates are arduous.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 May 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But now it's 4:15am and I can go to sleep! Perhaps I will wake up to a glorious rererematch.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 May 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Casuistry and Sundar - sorry for the delay - my home broadband has crashed and I'm waiting for an engineer to come, and here at work redhotpawn.com is blocked - arggghhhhhh. I'll probably go round to a friend's to pick up my email tomorrow if no engineer tonight, so I'll move then.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 6 May 2005 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! That game was the game. I went to bed and apparently woke up idiotic, but still! I am much more convinced by chess, now.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised causistry resigned our game so soon. i had worked out all kinds of crafty manoeuvres to play around with haha.

puzzleworth really ought to take the first win vs me now, only he can mess it up from this point. mmm, the sweet prospects of retirement awaits.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, Ken, it was completely hopeless! You were up a piece, had fantastic positioning, and probably had a few dozen tempi on me.

But I will try again at some point. You are my windmill, Ken, and I have my quixotic quest. Or something.

Soon I will be ready for another sally with GP.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

GP, do you want to take a stab at annotating that game?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to! My finals start in three days though - I shouldn't really even be thinking about chess. In two-and-a-half weeks I'll be dead keen to play again and anote and stuff...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, revive and rechallenge when you're ready.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)
