this ep was actually better/funnier than most of last season

I wasn't drawn in by this as much as I was by the s1 premiere but it does make me look forward to the rest of the season

i really want to like this show but really do not like this show

one thing that bugs me is that it feels very disjointed to me, like she has no idea how to write for television

Only Morbs would (winkingly, I concede) poo-poo the current surplus of riches on TV by suggesting that what TV might need is someone who doesn't know how to write for TV. Like Dunham surveyed a week's worth of awesomeness that's almost as impossible to catch up with as an issue of the New Yorker and figured, hmm these shows are all so well written, acted, directed, generally well put together, and their stories so dramatically/comically compelling and entertaining, maybe if I approach it from a different direction ...

i didn't think this was such a great return; paled next to most of last season. hope it improves.

I don't think it would have bothered me so much if the world of the show didn't seem so exclusive and rarefied and snobby in this sort of underhanded way where being a truster in a shabby apartment seems to be the only acceptable way to be. Also the VC guy was way over the top, although it almost worked in a Paul Thomas Anderson sort of way.

Anyway, pretty much the same issue I have with the same show generally -- good because it captures a certain kind of 20-something worldview so well, bad because it actually is written from such a close distance to that worldview that it sometimes lacks self-awareness.

"with the same show generally" --> "with the show generally"

i think it has self-awareness, i think it just mistakes general self-awareness for actual rigor or criticism or thought

*sometimes* mistakes, i should say

the only thing I've seen of Girls that I've really found funny (and I haven't seen very much of it) is the HBO promo where she's riding on dude's handlebars going "I don't feel safe can you please stop" and dude does and she faceplants

episode was ok. I'll keep watching. the meta-joke introducing the black character was p lame. ("I've been waiting for this for so long!")

I guess (xp). Like I heard Dunham on Fresh Air, in what I think was a repeat, and she distinguished herself from Hannah Horvath by pointing out that while Hannah's parents give her money and then eventually cut her off, her parents never gave her money to live in the city, they made her live at home (IN THEIR AWESOME LOFT IN THE CITY). I guess I can't entirely blame her for trying to come up with some weird, defensive narrative about the whole thing, since here I am scrutinizing her for her upbringing. I just wish she had a more realistic understanding of what it meant for her.

Childish Gambino poisons my enjoyment of anything Donald Glover does now.
Those two moments and Marnie w/ her ex-boss were as close as I got to a chuckle from the entire episode.

yep but they don't really appear in ep 1 til the very end. Jessa's in ep 2, apparently

did you notice how she was doing this in front of a black girl? and it was a different one than the one eli was talking to! my, this show's progressed

also pointing out that adam's peed on hannah twice now

yeah this is how I felt, a little too much of who's getting with who

does the guy who is a man and knows how to do things show up?

he's in one of the trailers that ruins the season for you by telling you everything that's gonna happen

what are the things he knows how to do? is he shown juggling on a unicycle?

The main promo pic at the top of this thread always throws me off. The two middle Girls sort of look nothing like their on-screen actresses.

I actually thought Lena Dunham was Alyson Hannigan the first time I saw that pic

yeah her hair's all flatironed and odd looking

I hope the Hannah's new housemate thing only lasts another ep or two... it seems like such a go-nowhere storyline

yeah eli's bf's parting seems designed to set this up

think I didn't like how at pretty much at almost all points of the ep I could imagine the writers at the writers table going "wouldn't it be crazy if X hooked up with Y"

adam continues to slay tho

This was funny! Some good scenes. First episode has all the catching-up/setting-up so I go easy on it for some things but pretty solid.

"so you've met his parents?"
"no, he pays for everything."

just watched all of season 1 in the last couple days. this show is great.

much better than Tiny Furniture, altho I'm glad she kept my favorite actor/character from that (Ray)

yeah ray continued to shred "my computer told me you unfriended me on facebook..." though it was kinda creepy how he just grabbed her at the end
