r|t|c, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

idk i can see rvp's success finally giving fergie the impetus to begin the destruction of rooney

a two year project of slow erosion

Since baseball season ended, I've been watching a lot of soccer without any particular rooting interest or knowledge of the teams. Wigan and QPR really are amazingly bad, aren't they? /captainobvious

WilliamC, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

wigan aren't terrible, they looked pretty good the other day

they are run very frugally (actually making a profit this year) and play a fairly unusual and relatively complex tactical method which means it usually takes until late in the season for them to really look good

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

You'll find no contradictor on QPR round here though

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 17:22 (thirteen years ago)

tbf we're building something not just bad, not just amazingly bad, but something monumentally eternally bad that will truly stand the test of time

r|t|c, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

let the liquidator be the judge of that

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

the trouble with preternatural badness is that's it's difficult to create a dynasty

maybe we have to rethink it so that it's less about decades of sustained torpor and more about a turbid 18 months of implosion, dioufs and ben-haims appearing from nowhere for three game spells, fan forums on first name terms with administrators

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

maya yoshida is not great is he

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

wigan aren't terrible, they looked pretty good the other day

I'm not quite to the point yet of remembering from one week to the next whether I've ever seen a team play before or not. I mean I seriously don't care who wins as long as it's entertaining football. So my "wow, Wigan is bad" impression comes just from today's game and the haplessness of defenders running into each other (MU's 4th goal), the keeper (all 90 minutes) and a vague impression of sloppy passing and ball-handling compared to the opposition.

I have seen two QPR games now though and can kind of get a sense of what it'd be like to be a Houston Astros fan.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

this isn't america tho, there is a vast inequity of means even between bad sides, so badness can mean terrible mismanagement, profligacy and moral squalour (qpr) or it can just be poverty

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

i don't like to remind us that football exists in an actual world that exists prior to and independently of meta, but i really dislike watching arsenal away games when you can here the arsenal fans chanting over the home support

especially at places like reading, but southampton too, and wigan iirc

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

It's kind of nice to realise that they can sing and stuff after all, tbh

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

it's so pretentious, oooh look we are the REAL GOONER LADS not like them shit houses on their £100 seats at that emirates nah

"GENUINE WOOLWICH ARSENAL GENTLEMEN" surely?

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

If the epl reversed the home/away ratios at every ground it'd be a better place imo. Except when Fulham come to town possibly.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

idk what a soi disant authentic arsenal fan looks like these days, whether it is some jack wilshere lookalike guttersnipe longing for a prelapsarian north london with no turks or homosexuals, or some horrific flatcapped mumford and sons volkisch revivalist weirdo who pretends it's still 1893 and they are supervising the manufacture of soulful artisanal rifles to kill zulus

ramirez looks distraught, goal wrongfully disallowed and then replaced by a double barrelled anglo

we used to have a video of these hilarious/horrible Acid Jazz-looking twats playing a groovy Arsenal song but i'm fucked if i can find it now

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

btw wasn't the last epl thread about 17k posts even with the sandbox intermission?

and now we are halfway thru and only at 5k

things that are jokes pretty much (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

Can a result ever really be too Manchester?

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

In fairness that guy's missus *is* quite sexy and it's cute when he meets his kids in the park midway through. Nice touch how it finishes up at a gig with all the atmosphere of the Emirates too.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

OH GOD THAT's THE ONE THANKS NBS

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 19:34 (thirteen years ago)
