yeah i rewatched pinocchio a few years ago and found parts of it horrifying. can't really remember which parts though, besides when i was thinking about how much it would suck to turn into a donkey forever just for a little boozing and smoking.

semi-inspired by this thread i watched grave of the fireflies last night, now that's what i call horrifying. but also beautiful. the scene with the fireflies inside their mosquito net especially. in my retroactive vote for this poll i put it top 10 somewhere i guess.

Millennium Actress is soooooo good, really need to rewatch that soon. sad that Dreaming Machine might never see the light of day though.

How does MA compare with Paprika (the lone Satoshi Kon I've seen)?

Paprika is hands down better visually, Millennium Actress though for me was a much better story.

Lion King placing higher than Pinocchio is straight up travesty.

Yeah, I watched Lion King on a plane last year and I don't think it's held up that well. The animation still looks great, and there's some good songs, but the basic plot is hackneyed and IMO a bit rushed in the key places - Simba's growing-up has to happen basically all at once. Plus I think all the blood-as-destiny "true king" type stuff is on the dicey side, and Timon and Pumbaa are sort of the harbingers of all Dreamworksian fart joke animation.

I definitely don't think it's fair to blame the crimes of Dreamworks Animation on Timon & Pumbaa though!

Yeah, it's definitely Kimba + Hamlet except instead of tragic dithering, Hamlet's just kind of a sulky responsibility-shirking teen...who then suddenly isn't, and saves the day! Guilt trip angle from his childhood buddy turned sweetheart is okay as far as it goes but I still feel like there's a missing step on his journey. And yeah, the politics bug me.

Glad to see Millennium Actress and hope it isn't the last Kon. Personally I found Paprika his weakest film, it felt too much like a "typical anime" despite the amazing visuals.

MA was good but perfect blue was better

it's lol that every other movie i'm like "i just watched this with my kid" but i did and you are otm, has aged pretty poorly. don't even really care for the animation that much tbh.

i didn't vote but yeah, jesus christ. I consider Pinocchio to be the greatest Disney movie ever by a considerable distance though

Hmm, Rabbit of Seville was my #1... did my ballot not get counted? I'll still watch the countdown, but will have to do my own tallying where everything cool moves up, like, twenty points.

Can't speak for silby, but I reckon it was counted; he doesn't list the number of first place votes, if that's your concern.

Phantasm one of the best Timm offerings imo, action set pieces are awesome, unexpectedly good romance angle, best motion adaptation of origin that has added bonus of having nothing to do with Year One. Plus, typically great Joker involvement. Operatic. May be my favorite Batfilm, full stop.
