By 10:30, the victim’s mangled body had not been removed from the tracks.

“I heard the train screech as it was stopping and then heard this loud scream,” said Linda Santini-Tripodis, the owner of Merit Group & Associates, who was beneath the 40th Street station at the time.

“I’m never going to forget that scream for as long as I live,” Santini-Tripodis said.

it would be cool if the MTA got a billion zillion dollars and could install platform doors in all their stations

Iirc don't like 100 ppl die from getting struck by MTA trains every year? Is it just now being widely reported bcz of sensationalism?

almost none of those are homicides

iatee, Saturday, 29 December 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

A 31-year-old woman will be charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime, according to a source within the Queens district attorney’s office.

The woman, Erica Menendez of the Bronx, is in custody after making statements that implicated herself in the death of Sunando Sen on Thursday night.

The New York Times reported that a law enforcement official said that Ms. Menendez had “told the cops it was an act against Muslims,” and cited the Sept. 11 attacks. The victim, Sunando Sen, was born in India and, according to a roommate, was raised Hindu.

iatee, Saturday, 29 December 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

“The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway commuter’s nightmare,” Mr. Brown said in an interview. “Being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.”

Mr. Brown quoting Ms. Menendez as telling the police, “I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I’ve been beating them up.”

iatee, Saturday, 29 December 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

God damn. Living here, walking down the street or riding the subway, there's an extent to which it's not even useful to me to distinguish between whether someone is mentally ill, incredibly stupid or just a fucking asshole.

I just told a friend of mine the other day that I think his opponents should literally just run ads that say "Joe Lhota is running for Mayor of New York City. BUT HE'S THE HEAD OF THE MTA." and that's it.

it's hard to imagine a worse starting point. as far as most New Yorkers are concerned, the MTA is an evil demon force that occasionally shuts down the subway system, which otherwise functions completely on its own. or Bloomberg, maybe he runs it.

iatee, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

Most New Yorkers know the subway is kept functioning by the Deros:

a race of mal-formed subhuman creatures called deros (from detrimental robots) who inhabited a vast system of underground cities all over the world. The original name of their habitat was Lemuria, and they had once been slaves of the Lemurian master race. But the master race had long since disappeared from the earth, leaving the ignorant and malicious deros in control of the great cities and wonderful machines it had built. Since then the deros occupied themselves mainly in persecuting the human race who lived on the crust of the earth above them.

The deros were responsible for much of the evil in the world. Catastrophes, from shipwrecks to sprained ankles, were attributable to their influence. They often appeared on the surface of the earth and were sufficiently human in appearance to pass unnoticed in a crowd. But they performed most of their harassment by telepathy, rays, and other remote control devices from their subterranean homes.
Their underground cities communicated with the surface through various caves which were extremely dangerous for human beings to enter.
