Today I'm familiarizing myself with my new neighbourhood. Gym? Market? Pharmacy? Butcher? Hospital? Etc.

where did you end up finding a place? because if you're in my neighbourhood the Y is pretty affordable, although i can't really speak to the beefcake situation.

there's a pharmacy in the jean coutu and the uniprix and a couple of great family-run indian grocery stores.

also, i can think of three different butchers, including one kosher butcher within two blocks of the bagels.

I found everything! I bought and cooked a massive amount of cabbage and broccoli and kale for a couple days of snacking, and some beef and sausages at Vito's. Tomorrow it's a haircut and reinstating myself at the Y

No better way to begin a Sunday than with Teena Marie and Chris Hayes.

I listened to the entire 2-disc Tom Moulton Soul Jazz comp half-asleep on a Megabus from DC. That was nice-ish.

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 16 December 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

In fairness listening to that Tom Moulton comp anywhere is nice.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 16 December 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

It is!! And it's so rare that I have a solid distraction-free 2+ hours to dedicate to listening to something like that in its entirety. On the ride down on Thurs morn I knocked out one of the equally long Disco Discharge comps ("European Connection" I think? The one w/ "Hills of Katmadu" on it, props to clouds for the tipoff)

crypto, who is this Canadian poet? as a poet, and a fan of many Canadian poets, my inquiring mind desires to know.

also, HI GAYS. had fun in NYC, though didn't see any ilxorz, sadly. (morbz, come to my reading at Zinc Bar in March!)

now i am back in oakland and all goes swimmingly. got called off work today, so i'm going to take a bath, eat cookies, read Foucault, and listen to Stars of the Lid, wondering when they will put out a new album because dammit.

tabes: Susan Holbrook. Published in quite a few poetry journals so if you follow contemporary poetry to a reasonable degree, there might be a good chance you've run across her. I'll know a lot more about this stuff in a few months time, as the class I'm GAing is her Canadian poetry course.

Everyone read her "Good Egg Bad Seed" (from the collection "Joy is So Exhausting") if it is at all possible for you to do so.

since i've started going out w/M, a lot of people have made comments along the lines of how they're glad i'm getting into cooking, now that i'm dating a boy who loves to cook. and i'm like, no, i'm further away than ever: watching people cook doesn't make me think, wow, that looks easy, i could do that; it makes me think, wow, that is actual MAGIC, i could NEVER do that, it would go so wrong! instead, i seem to have gone from zero to obsession with cryptic crosswords (which he loves). i'd never even tried one before august and now i'm addicted.

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 13:09 (thirteen years ago)

Just as long as you're doing the washing up, you're pulling your weight.

lex, does your boy make fun of, for instance, your absolute terror at the thought of having to boil pasta?

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

i can boil pasta, ACTUALLY, though he has made fun of (and indeed banished me from the kitchen in disgrace for) my inability to grate cheese

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

but he still cooks everything from sea bass to beef wellington to yule logs to seafood chowder for me, so it doesn't matter

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

Beef Wellington!!

curly moe shempsen (donna rouge), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

It's where Doug Yule recorded the indignities Lou Reed inflicted on him.

You hate food, song and sex, Morbs?

I mean, I only hate one of those three.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

I thought "sex" made your list four.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

BFs /= sex

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

I could easily have a boyfriend without sex in the equation.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

I view cooking as a way to avoid listening to music, toying with the computer, or watching movies.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 December 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

all of those things are better than cooking though, like why would i ever want to avoid them? apart from the internet obv but in that case i'm usually trying to avoid work and don't have time to cook

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

the only reason I do any paid work at all is so that I can afford nice ingredients to cook with

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 17 December 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

^^^gets it

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 17 December 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

Nice ingredients to eat drink with.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 17 December 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

ll of those things are better than cooking though, like why would i ever want to avoid them?

cuz I'm doing them all day, even at work?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 December 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

Cooking is my default setting for procrastination. Typically I know when work is going badly when I'm running out to buy chickens to roast for everybody

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

i made a humongous pot of chili last night btw

curly moe shempsen (donna rouge), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

gonna be my dinner the rest of the week

gonna get real sick of chili after this week

curly moe shempsen (donna rouge), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

i did the same thing with a peanut soup, except my pot wasn't big enough, so i had an overflow pot.

Tome Cruise (Matt P), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

i always do this when payday is in a week and i have ten dollars.

Tome Cruise (Matt P), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

(hat tip to ilx poster crabbits for the awesome peanut soup recipe btw)

Tome Cruise (Matt P), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

i've always been in the same boat as lex w/r/t cooking, but a few weeks ago i decided i could no longer stand the crappy diet i've been on since moving to NYC and living solo. that frustration + the ILX paleo diet thread inspired me to look up some simple paleo recipes and give them a try and whoa! i can totally do this. it's like i have magic hands--everything that used to seem so impossible and unbearable to me is suddenly so easy. feels great to cut down on all the bread products and pasta i'd been overdoing. not being strict too strict with the paleo thing, though--mainly using it for meal ideas.

i'm amused at how cooking and traveling were two things i always avoided in my previous relationship but now i'm regularly doing both.
