<3 my neighbourhood for having all of these within two minutes walk of my front door (also a pub, crêperie, grocer etc) except the gym (i kept meaning to join a gym before i realised i could much the same effects for free by going running and doing weights etc)

Details: Went back to school in the fall after seven years (I had previously graduated with an Honours degree in English) in order to do some upgrades so I could apply to the grad program in English Language and Lit. Got word yesterday that the department voted unanimously to accept my application. Will be getting what I'm told is a sweet GA salary, and will have the honour of working for a brilliant Canadian poet, who was also my advisor through this whole thing and really helped me out the whole way (and who'd already be the awesomest and nicest person ever even if she weren't also an amazing writer). Needless to say, life is very, very good right now.

Running + weights at home is my ideal situation but I love a weekly swim and a Smith machine

Also, bf had been dropping hints that we might be getting a second puppy for xmas if I got in, so...

where did you end up finding a place? because if you're in my neighbourhood the Y is pretty affordable, although i can't really speak to the beefcake situation.

there's a pharmacy in the jean coutu and the uniprix and a couple of great family-run indian grocery stores.

also, i can think of three different butchers, including one kosher butcher within two blocks of the bagels.

I found everything! I bought and cooked a massive amount of cabbage and broccoli and kale for a couple days of snacking, and some beef and sausages at Vito's. Tomorrow it's a haircut and reinstating myself at the Y

I listened to the entire 2-disc Tom Moulton Soul Jazz comp half-asleep on a Megabus from DC. That was nice-ish.

In fairness listening to that Tom Moulton comp anywhere is nice.

It is!! And it's so rare that I have a solid distraction-free 2+ hours to dedicate to listening to something like that in its entirety. On the ride down on Thurs morn I knocked out one of the equally long Disco Discharge comps ("European Connection" I think? The one w/ "Hills of Katmadu" on it, props to clouds for the tipoff)

tabes: Susan Holbrook. Published in quite a few poetry journals so if you follow contemporary poetry to a reasonable degree, there might be a good chance you've run across her. I'll know a lot more about this stuff in a few months time, as the class I'm GAing is her Canadian poetry course.

Everyone read her "Good Egg Bad Seed" (from the collection "Joy is So Exhausting") if it is at all possible for you to do so.

since i've started going out w/M, a lot of people have made comments along the lines of how they're glad i'm getting into cooking, now that i'm dating a boy who loves to cook. and i'm like, no, i'm further away than ever: watching people cook doesn't make me think, wow, that looks easy, i could do that; it makes me think, wow, that is actual MAGIC, i could NEVER do that, it would go so wrong! instead, i seem to have gone from zero to obsession with cryptic crosswords (which he loves). i'd never even tried one before august and now i'm addicted.

Just as long as you're doing the washing up, you're pulling your weight.

i can boil pasta, ACTUALLY, though he has made fun of (and indeed banished me from the kitchen in disgrace for) my inability to grate cheese

but he still cooks everything from sea bass to beef wellington to yule logs to seafood chowder for me, so it doesn't matter

I view cooking as a way to avoid listening to music, toying with the computer, or watching movies.

all of those things are better than cooking though, like why would i ever want to avoid them? apart from the internet obv but in that case i'm usually trying to avoid work and don't have time to cook
