Technically it's on until about 5pm. Most of the stuff is gone by about 1pm.

I can vouch for the Dove too. It's nooky at the back. And there's a box of games like Connect 4. In fact my first proper date with my girlfriend was in The Dove.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

MG: nooky at the back?

On a first date?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Your mind is swimming in filth. I meant in a nook and cranny stylee.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That's why Dave lives in Hackney!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i am not mikey's girlfriend

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, i'm just around the corner from here! i'm busy tomorrow for most of the day helping Huey move house, but I might be around before Magnetic Fields tomorrow late afternoon/early evening, and Sunday arvo's a definite possibility too. Txt me darl...I know pubs. Many pubs.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Txt me darl
Are you a girl? (sorry)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i'd rather keep this a 'when i wake up i'll be along' kind of thing, but could be talked into setting a time and place. although i'm not sure if i could get to the broadway market on my own without getting lost...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't actually know where Broadway Market is, either. But the flat where I'm house-sitting is right on the 38, so just get here and we'll A to Z it.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Broadway Market is pretty much slap-bang between Bethnal Green tube and the corner of Graham Road and Mare St, thus probably quite a handy mid-point meeting point innit.

And no, I'm not (much of) a girl, Pinkpanther, although I believe you might be..?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah I'm only joking, I know you're a boy, it's just exactly the sort of thing I'd say! Sorry, just bored at work & messing on ILX! And yeah, I'm all woman! heh!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

pink, charlie would be your biggest fan, what with your bright trainers and sparkly nails...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the best nails at the moment Colette! In the bottle it was a sparkly orange affair, but it looks pink, of course, with loadsa orangey glitter bits. very fancy dontcha know! ;-) What shall I have for Glasto huh? Oh & Colette, can i pls (pretty pink please) have your mobile number, so that we can meet up on the thursday night at glasto?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Belgian beer and connect four sounds like a fantastic way to spend a saturday afternoon.

Might be an idea to have an approximate time, even if it's depending on when we get out of bed... tho', Kate and Colette, you both have my number, yes? And can probably while away time at market.

cis (cis), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Cis, are you going to Glasto?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(Kate-pls don't kill me for talking about Glasto on this thread)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, pink i'm going to email you from my fancy new gmail account!

kate, will you send me an email with the postcode of where you're staying? i'll streetmap it and have a better idea of where i'm going tomorrow...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's OK, you're just talking, you're not posting 400 POSTS IN AN HOUR BABBLING ABOUT HOW TO GET TICKETS!!!!

I tend to get up quite early (we're talking 7/8am here, assuming the B&T's let me get some sleep) so if you guys want to meet at a time later than that (which I assume you do coz I doubt the market will be open that early) perhaps make a broad timespan suggestion?

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Woo! I'll let you have my work address if you'd prefer to send it there??!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know the postcode, but it is Streetmapped Here...

(If anyone wants to use this to stalk me, you're out of luck coz I don't actually live there, ha ha!)

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, more like lunchtime for me, probably. 1 is a safe bet, but i'll text you in the am when i'm about. you guys can feel free to make plans earlier and i can join you when i get there, i'm sure we'll be able to find each other.

(although i do want to go to that shoe shop, as long as i'm going to hackney)

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

1pm or a bit earlier sounds good.

Pink - I'm not, wish I was. :(

Am dead envious of your glittery nailpolish, too. (even if I have no nails to speak of at the moment. damn elections making me twitchy.)

cis (cis), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn! According to the map, Broadway Market looks MILES away from where I am. I have grown spoiled by central London, or am I reading the wrong scale on the map? I will get up early and go to Primark before the queues. I need flirty summer dresses.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, now i remember what else i'd been thinking about doing tomorrow...

www.opensquares.org.uk

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, no, I'm being dumb, I misunderstood the scale of the map. I didn't realise London Fields was so close to where I am!

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post... for a moment, I thought that the Duke of Bedford's private garden was open to the public, and thought with joy of the amount of noise Joe would have to endure, but unfortunately, that is not the case, it's just Russell Square.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The market is walkable from Hackney Central. Just the other side of London Fields.

Alternatively, jump on a bus down Mare Street heading East. Get off just after it crosses the Grand Union Canal.

I can confirm I am not Dave's girlfriend.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

heading East

East? East? Mental! South, surely...

Canal bit's right tho.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right, south.

Just, er, testing.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So any plans for a fap in July? I am missing faps. :-( Anyone want to fap in lovely cambridge?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Name the date, and I've already said I'll FAP in Cambridge!

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well you keep saying you'll fap in cambridge, I mean I've already got the bed/room ready for ya!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to come to cambridge as well. i could do the last two weekends in july. the middle two are sucked up by my parents visiting. yeehaw.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty free in July, so whatever's cool with everyone else. I know there was s'posed to be a big cambridge fap, but can't remember when ppl wanted to do this.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The last two weekends in July are BLANK in my diary. Pick one, my dear, and we'll all ink it in and refuse to allow any other plans.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the 31st then, it's certainly when I get paid.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Spiritualized are playing at the RFH the next day... though if I don't get *too* ratted, it would be nice to be sitting in the RFH drifting gently with a mild hangover and good feeling...

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I approve of the Dove (but can't make it unfortunately).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

31st works for me (24th does as well, but maybe it'll be nice to have a weekend without obligations)

should i put it in my diary?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Should we wait til nearer the time, so that more ppl could make it? I know Matt & stevem et al wanted to come down to cambridge!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Please, let's NOT wait till nearer the time this time? Because that's how my time gets eaten up with other obligations! OK, fair enough, it was usually Joe making those other obligations without telling me, but advance warning is better in these things.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i'm not going to make it - however, if you get up early and fancy making a journey across london, i would still be happy for you to stalk me.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well then start a thread about it kate, but i am sure it will be lost this early. Don't worry i'll remind you!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not coming either, but I will be shopping at Broadway Market in the morning if you get bored of stalking Dave.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

You should start the thread, Pink! It's your FAP, and besides, I've started, like, three threads today! The key to it not disappearing, I think, is having Stevem put it on the ILX calendar.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm confused. Coming where? We're not about the stalking, we're all about the SHOPPING.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

No it's not my fap, I just want y'all to come punting in cambridge!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't come to Hackney to shop. It simply isn't tolerated.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

We shall be iconclasts, then. Or possibly chased out of town by irate locals.

cis (cis), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No, we will just be hit about the head and shoulders by locals in the Primark for scoring the good bargains first!

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Cambridge - Fancy A Punt?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 June 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.lbwf.gov.uk/environment/design_awards/design_awards_ancient_hse.stm

It says 15th century in this link, but I think it is actually early sixteenth. Walthamstow is now firmly East London and Sutton House should quietly drop their claim.

Back in even older days, the Lea / Lee was the division between the Saxons and Danelaw.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to remember which river was the division between the Saxons and the Romano-Celts, but I think it was one of the burried ones.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Does East End = East London? I always thought it meant the chunk nearest the city. You wouldn't talk about Ladbroke Grove or Shepheds Bush being West End would you?

I'm not sure how this works exactly.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought East End meant pretty much anywhere in East London, but West End is a very specific bit of Central London between, arbitrarily speaking, Aldwych and Marble Arch.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that Tim's right. I generally think of the East End as being the strip between Tower and the course of the old wall on the west and the river Lee or Lea on the East.

But I can't remember if Sutton House advertises itself as "the oldest house in the East End" (which it might well be) or "the oldest house in East London" (which would be this justified and ancient house of Walthamstowe.)

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

There are various definitions, but as a general rule, the E postcode prefix is the best guide. The notion of what constitutes the east end has changed over the years as local government was reorganised and with the post war housing boom. Traditionally it meant to the east of the City (i.e Whitechappell, Shoreditch etc), but only because beyond these places were fields.

Most of what is now the east end was Essex. East Ham, West Ham, Canning Town, Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone etc etc were all hamlets which were built up after the docks were built.

There was some discussion about this in the papers when Eastenders started. Walford being pretty much a post-war district that would have been east of the Lea.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 14 June 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

nineteen years pass...

Off to see the Notwist at Earth on Sunday (Hackney) and staying in a Premier Inn in Shoreditch.

Any food recommendations near-ish (more "not a faff" than necessarily close) for an evening meal and then breakfast the next day?

Bit broad but any recommendations for London things at the moment?

djh, Sunday, 12 May 2024 16:30 (two years ago)

Mangal 2 is pretty much opposite your venue, very good turkish place (went from hearty trad food to bourgie small plates but still great eating). Brunswick East does good breakfast.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 13 May 2024 12:40 (two years ago)

xp The obvious thing to eat near Earth would be Turkish - lots of good Turkish round there. Can't go wrong with Mangal 1 (quite trad ocakbasi) or Mangal 2 (more hipstery and unusual / cheffy) - the latter less likely to make you so full you want to go to sleep during the show. If you'd rather eat closer to your hotel there are a bunch of good Vietnamese places just round the corner at the bottom of Kingsland Road, which leaves you with a pretty quick and simple bus ride to get to Dalston (the 149 amongst others). But there is a massive amount of choice which qualifies as "nota faff" - if you have anything you would particularly like feel free to narrow it down.

Tim, Monday, 13 May 2024 15:30 (two years ago)

Thanks both.
