Huge news:

Google Maps is back! The official Google maps apps just launched for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, including support for the 4" screen in the iPhone 5. Looks like you'll need a Google account to use it, which I don't have yet so I can't try it out yet and see how we'll integrated it is with other apps.

and it's very very good

although it looks like it's not indexed properly yet – it wasn't coming up in search results, and some people can't even download it using the direct link

I'm really liking google's design on their last couple iOS app updates, incl this maps app.

you don't need a google account i don't think. it asks you to log in to create maps to share, but you can skip that.

i logged in though. does anyone need a gmail invite?

The rub is that year default map app is still Apple's, but WB nonetheless.

xp - I use other providers for email and social networking, don't post youtube comments, and use flickr rather than picasa for photo sharing. Don't feel like I've been living in the dark ages w/o a google account

Apparently you don't actually need to log in to Google, they just make it look like you do.

Ooh, two finger swipe down gives you a 3d view including buildings. And the tube map overlay is really nice too. This is grebt.

So, should I upgrade my iphone 4 to OS6 now? Only things stopping me are fear of it being slow, and google maps. But will I now have apple maps in citymapper, rather than google ones, even after updating? I've seen talk of a google maps API, but not sure what this will mean in practice.

And, tagging on, should I upgrade a 3G?....

My 3Gs is on iOS 6 and it's about the same speed it was on 5, tbh.

You do have apple maps in citymapper, unfortunately. But the transit directions I tried in the new maps app earlier were spot-on.

Just upgraded and it's stuck a Passbook app on my first screen, can't remember what was in its spot before :/

what are the other good Google iOS apps? I love gmail so much that I put Mail into its own little folder so that I never have to look at it again

Bullshit, I downloaded the Google Maps app for iPad last night and iPhone this morning. I think dude just isn't scrolling past the first page of search results. xp

I searched for Google Maps from my iPhone last night around 12:30 and couldn't find it; this morning it was the third or fourth result

Tried Google Maps - I'm sure the maps themselves are better, but the performance is not as good as the native app, feels a lot choppier. Also, it's way too sensitive with the rotation gesture

works sweet as hell on an iPhone 4s, looks like they're doing some weird not-quite-vector graphics thing still

Have been hearing scattered reports of choppiness, which it definitely isn't on my phones. I wonder if networking's involved. Will go try on shitty 3g and see

on iPhone 5 w/ verizon lte it's super fast

iTunes 11.0.1 is out too. Fixes most of the glaring bugs so far (unless you consider iTunes itself to be one large bug)
