"Your gran-dad is both a renegade and a gentleman"

I saw when she originally tweeted that and just assumed it was a joke tweet, but lots of people seem to be taking it pretty seriously.

No, they are pissed she used abuse jokes, have not seen anyone imply she is abuse victim

starting to suspect Lena Dunham could tell a lawyer joke out of the Prairie Home Companion joke book and get heat for it

As far as the whole "Dunham is privileged/connected" thing, I basically came to terms with it like this: There are thousands of other equally "privileged" wannabe artists, writers, musicians, directors, actors, etc., and most of them don't make it because they are not as good or as driven as she is. At the same time, a person as talented and as driven as Dunham (which is admittedly rare) but without her connections would pretty much never have a show on HBO at 26. So I get the resentment but I also think it's overstated, because she is a genuinely good artist, and most rich kid MFA grads are never heard from again.

As far as the whole "the characters are privileged and don't have real problems" thing, I think this is a disingenous argument made by people who are largely jealous haters who don't have their own HBO show at 26. It's not The Wire, it's a relatively light show about twenty-somethings in New York, and I don't think it takes its characters overly seriously. The fact that their problems aren't immense doesn't mean that they're not "real" problems, even if they're not severe.

Anyway, I finished season 1 and I thought it was good. I think the show actually is gutsy and groundbreaking in certain ways, and at the same time it's mostly just good entertainment. Adam Driver is kind of transcendent, and way beyond the rest of the cast imo.

One surprising thing -- by the end of the season I just didn't like Hannah Horvath very much. I felt like the things people said about her were true -- she's overly self-involved and not a very good friend, and downright insensitive to other people on a regular basis. I found the date rape joke scene in the job interview telling -- that's not just some lol noob mistake, it's an absurdly clueless and even hostile thing to say to someone. I'm pretty sure Dunham is much more aware of this than Hannah is though.

glad you came to terms with this sitcom

i like it when you cut people down, mh. it's funny because it makes people feel stupid, which is funny.

apparently you missed the months of me being emotionally honest and getting artfully clowned as well. perspective is good.

mh, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

i prefer a more artful clowning, that's all i'm saying.

eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

well, now I feel dumb for lack of art. do you feel funny?

mh, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:19 (thirteen years ago)

poking fun at our group propensity for having to justify or reconcile our interest in a tv show isn't exactly a personal attack. pretty sure I did the exact same thing upthread.

mh, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:22 (thirteen years ago)

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Donald Glover is joining the cast as one of Hanna's boyfriends.

Or, as A.V. Club put it:

"Donald Glover will be a part of Girls directly addressing all the complaints about Girls"

One more pop-star question: What was that Drake quote in Vanity Fair about? ("Drake is not interested in you romantically or even sexually.") Is there a story?

There’s no Drake story except I think that the first time I was in Interview magazine, they asked, “Who do you want to interview?” And I was like, “Drake.” And they said, “Uh, we cannot get anyone to call us back. Drake doesn’t care.” And I didn’t expect Drake to care, although I know Drake has a crush on Kat Dennings; that’s his type. And I love Kat, and I’m happy for her, but I also think I just loved — I felt this real kinship when I listened to his last album that he was sort of ... I think kinship is the wrong word, but I don’t think I understood how much of a rap trope talking about the bitches and the weed and the money was not satisfying you was. I thought he was a fucking rap revolutionary.

oh, nicely done

drunk 'n' white's elements of style (Hurting 2), Friday, 11 January 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

you know, this is going to be a weird complaint, but the more I think about it I am bothered by the VC douchebag character, because a show by and about born-rich girls chooses to make its (only?) self-made character an unsympathetic and unbelieveable cartoon of an asshole who does all kind of gauche things like get upset about his $10,000 rug. Not that there aren't guys like that in the world, it just kind of bothers me that so far people whose parents give them money are all wonderful, complex human beings and the guy who worked hard for it (albeit in a probably horrible way) is a two-dimensional moron.

drunk 'n' white's elements of style (Hurting 2), Friday, 11 January 2013 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

the thing is though, plenty of people who worked hard for their money are two-dimensional morons

乒乓, Friday, 11 January 2013 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

tbf the trustafarians are not that complex, tho i havent seen the vc ep

lag∞n, Friday, 11 January 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

hurting, does that really bother you? the complaint seems a bit reaching, imo.

jed_, Friday, 11 January 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

I'm fine w anybody making fun of VC douchebags.
