Gardner began to impress during the 2003–04 season, and earned his England call-up as cover for Gareth Southgate in a friendly against Denmark in March 2004.[27] He won his first and only England cap against Sweden on 31 March 2004, after Sven-Göran Eriksson used him as a half-time substitute at the expense of John Terry; the Swedes won the game 1–0 with a 53rd minute strike from Zlatan Ibrahimović.[28]

idk when dean richards lost his confidence it was fuckin ugly, how long ago is that now?

I think that the early stages of a debilitating brain condition that ultimately killed him might have had something to do with that.

Spurs defenders up until 2009 or thereabouts don't count anyway. Also David Luiz is still playing regularly for Chelsea.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 November 2012 10:55 (thirteen years ago)

not sure dean richards had been diagnosed under hoddle

bill paxman (darraghmac), Friday, 30 November 2012 11:06 (thirteen years ago)

I definitely remember mysterious injuries/illnesses starting pretty early, like 2003 or thereabouts. By the following year we'd signed Naybet and from then on he didn't feature much.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 November 2012 11:30 (thirteen years ago)

I've just done a search for 'Dean Richards' and wow I was a lot more Darraghmac in my younger days. There's one comment I feel particularly bad about in hindsight.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 November 2012 11:32 (thirteen years ago)

we were all a bit that way once, i wouldn't be so hard on yourself. millionaire footballers don't tend to be overfazed by stuff they don't ever actually read.

bill paxman (darraghmac), Friday, 30 November 2012 11:40 (thirteen years ago)

I probably shouldn't have called for his severed head on a shit-covered plate though. That seems a bit excessive.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 November 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)

i thought it'd be that one alright

tho iirc you said once he'd make a spurs worst xi ahead of gardner, which was my next guess

Lee was picked for ESPN's MLS best XI this season and voted Vancouver's 2012 Player of the Year, fyi.

mizzell, Friday, 30 November 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

Let's not pretend that we're talking big club players here but Lee Young Pyo > Stalteri.

While you're around Nakh have you, or anyone else for that matter, seen much/any of Lazar Markovic?

pandemic, Friday, 30 November 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

I like the look of him, nice and girly. Between him and that kid at PSG, european footy might be in for a pleasingly shoegazey future.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 November 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

never watched him xp but i know current (or former who knows) manager avram grant was raving about him a while back

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks on Final Score:

"The way Rob Green went to save that shot from Holman, it looked like he was not at the top of his game.

"Green was talking to his coach all the time at the start of the game, and it is unprofessional to not be concentrating, I am surprised.

"He appeared to be distracted by the fact his shirt was clashing with the officials and he let it bother him too much.

"To go 1-0 down for QPR, it is a big blow."

Bale, the recipient of more yellow cards for diving than any other player in the Premiership, sarcastically applauding the ref for having the temerity to book him for diving. Nagl.

Matt DC, Saturday, 1 December 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

I think I can die happy now I've heard Garth Crooks try to pronounce "murderered".
