sorry man, I drank your whiskey and replaced it with basement water :(

Oh I really hope I get to Longman and Eagle when I'm in Chicago next month, I love it there and I've never had the opportunity to have a go at their whiskey selection.
― Tim, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)
wow, there is some stuff there i would love to try
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)
I like the place, been to eat there a few times. Glad I don't live on that block any more though, the parking/tourist/yuppie situation would drive me insane. Their sidewalk seating is bad enough...
― dansplaining (dan m), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)
Has anyone ever had this?

Top secret L&E tip, go there for lunch, when the lines are not mad and the bartenders can be talked into giving tastes. Granted, not the best time to start on whiskey, but you take the good with the bad.
Big Star in Chicago is another fun whiskey stop.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 23:03 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah the gf and I went with my parents like half an hour before dinner service started to get a little drink on ahead of time and ensure we got a decent table. It worked out well.
― dansplaining (dan m), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)
(that's pretty much the only way I can envision getting in there w/o hassle on a saturday)
Yeah Big Star is awesome also, though I often find myself looking longingly across the road to the Violet Hour. I understand that marks me out as a ponce, but whatevs, I'm English so everyone thinks that about me anyway.
The joy of being on vacation when we're in Chicago is we can plan our day to get to L&E before the madness kicks in too severely. Or just go eat at Lula over the road which is one of my lovely wife's favourite restaurants in the world.
― Tim, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)
Violet Hour is great, but not the casual commitment Big Star or L&E are.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 23:20 (thirteen years ago)
just bought some sazerac, stoked

Anyone know an online whiskey store in the US with reasonable prices on single malts?
― ljubljana, Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)
Not sure how reasonable they are but there's always http://www.binnys.com/
― dansplaining (dan m), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:01 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks - they look ok so going with them (still got gaps in my US online retail knowledge)
― ljubljana, Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:29 (thirteen years ago)
Today's payday and I'm fresh out of "nice-ish sippin' whiskey that I keep around to drink occasionally & expand my palate" so I went and bought a bottle of Jefferson's standard offering on my lunch break. Now it's just sitting on my desk, staring back at me. Teasing me, almost. Only 4 more hours...

― call all destroyer, Sunday, 2 December 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)
this is the amount i have now. it's enough for me but i am thinking maybe i should get some more for friends and stuff. cost is holding me back too.
Ha, you could have sold that PVW rye for enough to buy probably 10 4-packs of BCS.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 December 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)
but then i wouldn't have it!
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 2 December 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)
I'm fully aware of my own circular logic behind buying bottles of stuff due to their massively inflated price on the secondary market, knowing full well I would never sell on the secondary market.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 December 2012 02:55 (thirteen years ago)
if it was stuff i didn't like that would be one thing
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 2 December 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, CAD, I used to have the whole whiskey world at my fingertips, but now I live back in Idaho, where liquor is controlled by the state and they only sell the most popular brands -- "popular" in Idaho of course no where near equaling "best"...
Oh well. I've gone through nearly a 5th of Dickel 12. I swear every drop of it was sipped, no gulping!
Drunk. Next time I'm gonna order fancy stuff online, but the boys down in Tennessee haven't let me down yet. They can go ahead and let their whiskey sleep for 20 years down in Kentucky, doesn't mean its better!

it's not whisky, but tonight i got to enjoy some 36 year old rum from francis ford coppola's private reserve. he bought two barrels when it was 24 years old and transferred it to white wine barrels from his vineyard for 12 more years, bottled it, and kept the bottles for himself to give as gifts. i had never had rum outside of mixed drinks or awful shots, so this was quite a treat.
― eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Saturday, 8 December 2012 10:38 (thirteen years ago)
wow, that sounds kinda incredible. how was it?
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 December 2012 14:03 (thirteen years ago)
Surprised there's no massive clamor for certain rums the way there is for whiskey, though maybe there is! But rum has been made for a lot longer (than bourbon, at least), in more places, with fewer rules, and ages well (like whiskey), so there must be some really awesome pirate stuff floating around out there.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 8 December 2012 16:08 (thirteen years ago)
Bought this from the distillery in Oban, it was a little too easy to drink. Probably the nicest Whisky i've had to date.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YbzoZuWX2tE/TTnh2pUNeRI/AAAAAAAABlk/zGGAiAj2Qt4/s1600/oban-single-malt-14-front-highres.jpg
― not_goodwin, Saturday, 8 December 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
Xpost rum is continually super underrrated imo
― just sayin, Saturday, 8 December 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)
the FFC rum was really good, although i'm not a rum connoisseur, so i'm not really sure how it would compare to other boutique rums. you could definitely taste the oak like you would with a very old whisky, but the spirit itself is much thinner tasting. it was neat to try, and it might be super rare, but i'd take a bottle of talisker over it just in terms of taste. plus, (no brag) part of the allure of the rum is that i was drinking it WITH francis ford coppola, so that definitely added to the whole "unique experience" thing.
― eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Saturday, 8 December 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)
haha yeah that's pretty rad.
i've never heard of rum aged in white wine barrels! super curious about what they added.
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 December 2012 17:11 (thirteen years ago)
I want a rum aged in FFC's beard.

that's my fav
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 05:02 (thirteen years ago)
I could only manage the one glass because it was getting a little late and I'd already had two glasses of wine (plus lol 100 proof), but damn, for $20 and change out the door that stuff's flaovr easily outpaces the $30+ Jefferson's I bought a few weeks back.

For sure, Old Gran Dad 100 proof, like Wild Turkey 101, is a great deal. I have a bottle of Old Fitz 100 I've been meaning to open, too.

― curly moe shempsen (donna rouge), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 04:41 (thirteen years ago)
Snagged a bottle of 2001 Evan Williams single barrel on sale for $19 at a small town liquor store in MN today, feel kind of irrationally needy and happy about this. Couldn't convince myself to buy the other 3 bottles left on the shelf.

Anyone tried cask strength Laphroiag? Hooboy.
― Josiah Alan, Saturday, 29 December 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)
mmmm no but would try! i had to unbookmark this thread for a while because it was making me want to drink whiskey at inappropriate times of the day.
― passion it person (La Lechera), Saturday, 29 December 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)
there are no inappropriate times, just inopportune times
― mh, Saturday, 29 December 2012 21:38 (thirteen years ago)
3:15 PM in the Midwest? Sure let's test out this bottle that I got while grocery shopping.
And oh my, it's quite a bit stronger than anticipated. Glad I just tasted it.
― Josiah Alan, Saturday, 29 December 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)
I was at a whisky tasting a few months ago and got to try a 30 year old laphroiag, it was delicious and I don't even like regular laphroiag much. The harsh peat taste was totally smoothed off. Some might not like that I guess since that's kinda what laphroiag's all about, but for me it was great. But then it bloody well ought to be at £250 a bottle.
