I like Jessa, but that probably says something unsavory about me. Not really buying the marriage thing at all, or how everyone just kind of accepted it. The only character whose reaction to it seemed in character was Adam.

I just checked the episode dates and it turns out that I stopped watching this show the same week I got disinterested and annoyed with a mid-20s person I went on some dates with!

As far as the whole "Dunham is privileged/connected" thing, I basically came to terms with it like this: There are thousands of other equally "privileged" wannabe artists, writers, musicians, directors, actors, etc., and most of them don't make it because they are not as good or as driven as she is. At the same time, a person as talented and as driven as Dunham (which is admittedly rare) but without her connections would pretty much never have a show on HBO at 26. So I get the resentment but I also think it's overstated, because she is a genuinely good artist, and most rich kid MFA grads are never heard from again.
As far as the whole "the characters are privileged and don't have real problems" thing, I think this is a disingenous argument made by people who are largely jealous haters who don't have their own HBO show at 26. It's not The Wire, it's a relatively light show about twenty-somethings in New York, and I don't think it takes its characters overly seriously. The fact that their problems aren't immense doesn't mean that they're not "real" problems, even if they're not severe.
Anyway, I finished season 1 and I thought it was good. I think the show actually is gutsy and groundbreaking in certain ways, and at the same time it's mostly just good entertainment. Adam Driver is kind of transcendent, and way beyond the rest of the cast imo.
One surprising thing -- by the end of the season I just didn't like Hannah Horvath very much. I felt like the things people said about her were true -- she's overly self-involved and not a very good friend, and downright insensitive to other people on a regular basis. I found the date rape joke scene in the job interview telling -- that's not just some lol noob mistake, it's an absurdly clueless and even hostile thing to say to someone. I'm pretty sure Dunham is much more aware of this than Hannah is though.

poking fun at our group propensity for having to justify or reconcile our interest in a tv show isn't exactly a personal attack. pretty sure I did the exact same thing upthread.
