I have an unscratched itch re assholes lol-complaining about/bonding over their insufferable girlfriends. Marriage is not a fucking requirement, family and society's pressure aside, and you should dump her if she's actually the soul-killing bitch you paint her as.

I guess I should post an update on the situation I described last month.

A week after that ugly argument b/w Dad and me, he asked me to return. He apologized, sincerely and abjectly, for his behavior. Generally, he was as kind and genial and thoughtful as he was repulsive and violent the week before. But he said, quietly but with force, that he could not accept his son as a homosexual; that's just the way it is. He followed me outside. I said, "You know what this means" – that he wouldn't see me for a long, long time. "I know. I accept," he said. "You do what you must. You're always welcome here, this is your home, and I'll always love you." We hugged and parted.

A couple days later while he was out of town, I picked up Mom and took her to my sis and bro-in-law's. The only reason I was talking to her, I explained, was because she had said she would "try" to accept me – all I wanted. A two-hour chat after dinner confirmed the essential loneliness of her position: she was now in the middle, caught between two immovable objects.

Well, last Saturday, Dad left a voice message I missed wishing me a happy birthday. He hoped to see me tomorrow at the house, he said. Without returning the call, I drove over the next afternoon. Without wasting any time he said he couldn't accept placing Mom in the middle, he loved me, and therefore would have to accept me. My dad is Yoda-esque: he would do it; there was no try. If he had a condition, it was to give he and Mom freedom of movement: should a relative or friend choose not to accept a boyfriend and me, I shouldn't expect he and Mom to rally to my defense. Running through the Roldex of relatives and friends, I couldn't think of a single person who'd behave so abominably, let alone to my face, so I just said, "Sure. My worry is about you two, not anybody else." I said that this is now uncharted territory for all of us.

"Not really," he said. "We know what it looks like. You're going to introduce us to a guy and we'll have to accept it."

So I'm still dazed. The timing worked beautifully: the combination of birthday + holidays proved too inexorable. We hung out on Thanksgiving and the next day (his birthday) without strain or affect.

my own family-acceptance narrative was advanced this week as well, when dustin came to my mom's house for thanksgiving and met everybody - step-dad, younger bros, grandmother, great aunt, etc... even my step-dad, who has been the single opposing force for quite some time, was friendly and civil (if a bit quiet, but that's fine). it was pretty great! dustin felt comfortable enough to take a nap for an hour and a half after dinner. it's all good. all all so very very good.
