I'm hosting a gathering of 5 tomorrow. There will be pumpkin pie, but I'm looking forward to my sister's pumpkin cheesecake.

in re: brussels sprouts.

look up braising in your reference cookbook. basically, you halve them, saute them for a bit in a pan that you can also put a lid on and pop into the oven. enameled cast iron dutch ovens seem to be the popular thing these days. i have a cast iron fry pan with a good lid that works fine.

anyway, after you've sauted them, add a minimal amount of liquid (a quarter cup maybe), such as white wine. you can also add some crushed herbs, like rosemary. put the lid on and pop them into a medium hot oven for ten or twelve minutes. take 'em out and drizzle a tad bit of balsamic vinegar on them if you like.

i'm not sure about making the buttermilk biscuit dough ahead, but if I tried it, i'd for sure refrigerate the dough right away.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

oh, and deglaze the pan, too.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

I usually just roast brussels in EVOO in the oven with no saute prep, but now I want to try Aimless's version.

A friend just posted this "Brussels sprouts with bacon, chicken broth, fresh thyme, white pepper and sea salt." but I don't know the process. Will eat them tomorrow. I'm bringing wine, no cooking involved.

NYT quiddities and all that, but this is a nice Tksgiving essay: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/22/opinion/on-being-not-dead.html?_r=0

Waiting a bit. When all you have to make is a salad, hey.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

Having seen pics of Ned's salads, I suspect today's will be an exemplary demonstration of the art.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

Too kind. (Basics: red leaf lettuce, celery, broccoli.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

Happy thanksgiving ILX!

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

I wish I were having a turkey dinner, but I'm in Paris TX and Tera and August are in Austin, until next weekend. Watching movies all day and having enchilada with beans and rice instead. A lonely thanksgiving this year.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Aww. Happy Lonely Thanksgiving, Jacob. Just remember that with Senor Wences by your side you are never alone.

HA! thanks I needed a good laugh!

JacobSanders, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

Who around here eats later? For Cubans the notion of early afternoon meals is bizarre, even if football's involved.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

The dinner at my sister's is usually served at about 4:30pm. No football to be seen anywhere.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

we had really light breakfasts and plan to tear into the food around 2. no pretending that this is "dinner."

les rallizes miserables (get bent), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

My cousin's cooking. This year besides the turkey: wild boar with chutney, duck (I know not the recipe), corn risotto, and perhaps other passengers on Noah's ark.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

boar! wow

The turkey is in the oven, and when I can smell anything (I have periodic sneezing attacks and Johnstown Flood quantities of mucus) it smells GLORIOUS.

Not bad, and pretty good textururally, but a bit flavorless sans faux gravy.

I am Team Tofurky for life, as long as it's cooked right (on a bed of potato/carrot/onion/celery/garlic, marinated w/ olive oil and soy sauce). Beats the hell out of Field Roast and all the other things I've had.

goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

better than IRL turkey

goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

fuck dude I wanna nom those breakfast sandwiches so hard

Yeah, neither me nor my gf like turkey, or the preparation thereof, so we just said, "What would we eat if we could just stay home all day and do nothing but eat?"
