going to inlaws - doing a potluck thanksgiving. 7 of us total which is a fine and manageable number.

My usual thing for me -- friend's family house on the coast in San Pedro with a killer view out to Santa Catalina.

GAY HIPSTER BATMAN ON HIS WAY TO A CIRCUIT PARTY (donna rouge), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

our challenge is our friend rob. gluten/dairy/egg free. well, not that much of a challenge. he's a meat eater. we are making potatoes sans butter. and stuffing the turkey with apples. stuffing will be separate. a couple of vegetarians are coming too. we are giving them raw swiss chard to eat. just kidding! there will be plenty of veggie action.

Family scattered all over the place this year between Muscle Shoals and my sister's place in central MS. We'll be going down there and eating at a nice lakeside resort instead of doing a home-cooked thing.

WilliamC, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

- family decided we are having steak for thanksgiving
- I don't really care either way but it's still kinda lol to me, idk why

THAT IS ONE BIG PIZZA (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

i am always thankful for everything. oh man you have no idea. every day. even the horrible ones. i'm even thankful for jess's half-hearted misanthropy. it always reminds me to never repeat the mistakes of the 90's.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

the bf and i are getting a takeout thanksgiving dinner for 2 from gelson's (the local posh supermarket). turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, yam souffle, dinner rolls. we did this a few years ago and it was really nice.

les rallizes miserables (get bent), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

I've always wanted to this, our posh supermarket always has yum sounding menus

I made three pumpkin pies today, two of which will see duty at my sister's house tomorrow. My wife and I will begin eating the other one tonight.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

pumpkin pie is the thing I'm most looking forward to

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 22 November 2012 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

The fear of god and the love of pumpkin pie are the beginnings of wisdom, so they say.

I'm hosting a gathering of 5 tomorrow. There will be pumpkin pie, but I'm looking forward to my sister's pumpkin cheesecake.

The Devils of Loudoun County (j.lu), Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:14 (thirteen years ago)

in re: brussels sprouts.

look up braising in your reference cookbook. basically, you halve them, saute them for a bit in a pan that you can also put a lid on and pop into the oven. enameled cast iron dutch ovens seem to be the popular thing these days. i have a cast iron fry pan with a good lid that works fine.

anyway, after you've sauted them, add a minimal amount of liquid (a quarter cup maybe), such as white wine. you can also add some crushed herbs, like rosemary. put the lid on and pop them into a medium hot oven for ten or twelve minutes. take 'em out and drizzle a tad bit of balsamic vinegar on them if you like.

i'm not sure about making the buttermilk biscuit dough ahead, but if I tried it, i'd for sure refrigerate the dough right away.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

oh, and deglaze the pan, too.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

I usually just roast brussels in EVOO in the oven with no saute prep, but now I want to try Aimless's version.

ljubljana, Thursday, 22 November 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

A friend just posted this "Brussels sprouts with bacon, chicken broth, fresh thyme, white pepper and sea salt." but I don't know the process. Will eat them tomorrow. I'm bringing wine, no cooking involved.

Waiting a bit. When all you have to make is a salad, hey.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

Having seen pics of Ned's salads, I suspect today's will be an exemplary demonstration of the art.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

Too kind. (Basics: red leaf lettuce, celery, broccoli.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

Happy thanksgiving ILX!

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

I wish I were having a turkey dinner, but I'm in Paris TX and Tera and August are in Austin, until next weekend. Watching movies all day and having enchilada with beans and rice instead. A lonely thanksgiving this year.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Aww. Happy Lonely Thanksgiving, Jacob. Just remember that with Senor Wences by your side you are never alone.

HA! thanks I needed a good laugh!

Who around here eats later? For Cubans the notion of early afternoon meals is bizarre, even if football's involved.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

The dinner at my sister's is usually served at about 4:30pm. No football to be seen anywhere.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

we had really light breakfasts and plan to tear into the food around 2. no pretending that this is "dinner."

les rallizes miserables (get bent), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

we usually have our meal around 4. i find it weird but it works.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

We'll be eating around 5 or 5:30, lord willin'.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

what's your menu like, alfred?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

my dad and stepmom and I got stoned off some shit from Cali called "sputnik" and we are apparently getting a tday dinner from some place followed by homemade pie and oh christ if I don't eat soon I'm going to die

goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

My cousin's cooking. This year besides the turkey: wild boar with chutney, duck (I know not the recipe), corn risotto, and perhaps other passengers on Noah's ark.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

boar! wow

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

The turkey is in the oven, and when I can smell anything (I have periodic sneezing attacks and Johnstown Flood quantities of mucus) it smells GLORIOUS.
