Swole Miss (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)

well they didn't want to fire him before the flight back. That would have been awkward

Number None, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

Driven to the Lubyanka Cobham after landing back at Gatwick at 3:30, got the bullet in his own office. Gourlay and Buck sitting alone at the front of the plane while coaching staff sat in the middle. I presume the players were throwing screwed-up paper from the back row.

rafa in :(

second only to popcorn (or something), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

and as "interim manager", blimey he must've been desperate.

second only to popcorn (or something), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

aren't they all 'interim' at Chelsea?

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

The downside of lol Chelsea is that they're too competent to appoint a lol manager. Shoulda been Shearer. No, shoulda been Terry.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

Gonna be really weird if Rafa's still manager when Chelsea come to Anfield later this season.

pandemic, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Ja, this isn't right at all.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

2010: BBC Radio 5 live
CHELSEA APPOINT BENITEZ
Chair of the Chelsea Supporters Group, Trizia Fiorellino, on 5 live Sport: "I am gobsmacked. Chelsea pulled the rug from under Roberto Di Matteo, which was just ludicrous. Now they have got in someone of Benitez's calibre, who is a poor manager. Nobody has wanted to employ him for two years. What does that tell you? In England he won two things, both on penalties. Di Matteo did that in 20-odd games, it didn't take four years. Benitez has a propensity for zonal marking, which doesn't work in the Premier League. He is the wrong choice for Chelsea and the fans do not want him."

Prove them right, Rafa

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

lol

srsly dude if that's all you've got stfu

only Brod can judge me (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

Perhaps most worrying is that his appointment will include a transfer window. Unless interim means just to the end of the calendar year.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

tbf he can't really fuck anything up between now and May unless they plummet out of the top 4 and i feel safe betting that won't happen

only Brod can judge me (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

"What does that tell you? In England he won two things, both on penalties"

This argument makes me laugh so much. What did Ferguson won in England prior to his appointment at United?

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

ferguson hadnt managed in england to the tune of a couple hundred mil

bill paxman (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

Of all the available options, the guy who has a good working relationship with your out of form £50m striker is never going to be the worst.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

xpost So didn't di Matteo.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

that makes a perfect lack of sense

bill paxman (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

xp logic short-circuit?

all the people on the right, boogaloo (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

Meaning that past experience in England shouldn't really be a prerequisite to hire a new manager for a club like Chelsea, and that even if it was one, hiring one that has a CV that includes a FA Cup, a second place finish, a CL h and as mentionned above, a good working relationship with your out of form expensive striker, shouldn't be that much of a problem. Honestly, as a fan of the glamorous Girondins de Bordeaux, watching a few Chelsea fans complain about having a Liga/CL winner as an interim manager is just baffling.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

It's because they are irredeemable cunts.

I need to point out, Liverpool are in sixth place in the 'real Premier League table'

That's the table that only counts the big six

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

fuckin rawk, i mean

bill paxman (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

The Real Premier League Table is calculated using the decisions that directly affect goals e.g. goals ruled out for offside, corners incorrectly given that lead to goals, whether or not the ball has crossed the line, penalties etc.

ffs

Fucking Villa - homer refs, Lambo time, the lot

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

looks good to me. I believe Van Persie is leading the woodwork table this year too

Number None, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

Proof that Di Matteo sacked due to refereeing decisions.

pandemic, Thursday, 22 November 2012 06:00 (thirteen years ago)

I only just realised that this isn't actually guaranteed to end in lols - in a (blit) world where nobody takes defending or organisation seriously, there's a chance Rafa could win the league with this team.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 22 November 2012 07:34 (thirteen years ago)

Of all the available options, the guy who has a good working relationship with your out of form £50m striker is never going to be the worst.

disagree, it's like they've actually changed manager purely to get the best out of torres.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 22 November 2012 09:20 (thirteen years ago)

let's just see how he gets on with the 100m trio behind torres first, eh

bill paxman (darraghmac), Thursday, 22 November 2012 09:23 (thirteen years ago)

hope they like working as hard as a chariot fleet of kuyts

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 22 November 2012 09:24 (thirteen years ago)

Serious eyeroll, Liverpool under Rafa were one of the best, if not the best, defensive sides in the Premiership. Their problem was lack of creativity and goals, especially when Torres was injured.

yeah the total inability to break teams down at home is a legacy of rafa's tenure for sure. towards the end of 08/09 they began hammering teams, but the defence lost something around this time too.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 22 November 2012 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

but the other problem is that rafa's tactical/defensive skills are just more suited to cup competitions really. a manager who believes in stifling as the primary objective has never won the premier league, as far as i can remember?

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 22 November 2012 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

Mourinho arguably

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 22 November 2012 10:09 (thirteen years ago)

"Stifling as the primary objective" is a slightly loaded way of putting it but there are a lot of people who'd accuse Mourinho of that.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 November 2012 10:10 (thirteen years ago)

mourinho definitely. arguably every leaguewinning side since, certainly the tevez, cron, rooney counterattack version of a few years back. Awful side to watch, outside of highlights packages.

bill paxman (darraghmac), Thursday, 22 November 2012 10:17 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno, i think those sides are different to rafa's brand of negativity.
