Man, it was so fascinating to watch him modulate his performance tonight based on the person/comedian he has become. Very few jokes about his kids, some sideways references to his success, and lots of jokes about mortality/morality. Great bits involving splitting his morality into "of course ..." vs. "But maybe ...," legalizing murder, the end of "The Grapes of Wrath," how thankful we should be that we no longer exist in the midst of a food chain, etc. Not sure if he was funnier than the last time I saw him, but the ability of anyone to hold a crowd's attention for 90 minutes with most people chuckling to laughing the whole time is something.

This casual hour-long post-SNL talk radio chat has way more laughs (especially in 2nd half) than the SNL show itself, and certainly more than in the strained comic get-together linked above.

Josh, you were there too? Of course v Maybe was the highlight imo, but I laughed hardest at his opening improv about how the venue was too nice for him

why did he have a mic in his snl monologue

this is some shad imo, how many dozens of standups have done SNL monologues without needing their security blanket handheld mic to make it more like they're used to
― some dude, Monday, 19 November 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)
lol that was supposed to say "sad shit" although perhaps i was also dissing Shad "Lil Bow Wow" Moss
― some dude, Monday, 19 November 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)
i thought you meant some "shade"

i dont know if it was so much for his sake as just like... being an iconic standup comedian is so much his "thing"

lol if if he or someone else was like "holding a microphone, that's your thing, if you don't do that people won't recognize you" that's even more ridiculous
― some dude, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

hate when people who talk shit w/ each other all day every day decide when someone else is "getting mad" or "caring" too much just for making one or two quick posts about something
― some dude, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)
youre the one that called it sad shit

i think one or two quick posts is probably caring too much about this topic, if you want me to be honest right here

kinda weird to see some dude freaking out over this so much, it's just a show man
― balls, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 00:44 (thirteen years ago)
If it's 'just a show,' then let's see you do it. Huh? Didn't think so. (drops mic)
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 01:07 (thirteen years ago)
Dane Cook had a mic too.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
His mic was just a prop, though. It was made of candy.

lol finally dane does something before louis!
― some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)
huh, what other 'notable standups' have hosted relatively recently (ie this century)? galifinakis hasn't had a mic iirc but then again he's got the piano (plus his hosting came after movie fame, his standup career was sorta a bonus for snl but not the definining characteristic they would maybe feel the urge to acknowledge this way). kinda odd considering george carlin hosting first ep, richard pryor's crucial hosting gig, albert brooks + andy kaufman involvement plus o yeah, steve martin, that the 2nd lorne era has had so few standup hosts - the only ones i can think of where 'standup comic' was their primary claim to fame are andrew dice clay, dane cook, and louis ck. even if you throw in seinfeld and chris rock (and both would have asterisks i think) that's still not many.
― balls, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 02:28 (thirteen years ago)
When Steven Wright did a standup spot on SNL, he used a handheld mike. His "gutter ball" joke pretty much depended on it. And Louie occasionally does the thing where he gets a boomy sound by speaking too closely into the mike (as did Carlin and Pryor on their records), so maybe he just wanted to have that option.
― and I scream Fieri Eiffel Tower High (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 02:52 (thirteen years ago)
i didn't say 'this century,' i meant in all 38 seasons. but yeah in general there's not a lot of recent examples -- i think that says more about the state of standup than the state of SNL thoguh.
back when they actually had non-host standup segments in the middle of the show like Wright, yeah hold the mic whatever, i just thought it was funny w/ the monologue.
― some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 02:55 (thirteen years ago)
i'm kinda surprised that the FX episodes about him trying out to replace Letterman didn't involve a bit about him being uncomfortable doing a monologue w/o holding a mic
― some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 02:56 (thirteen years ago)
I just assumed at the time his mic pack or boom mic or whatever they were using at the time was fucking up so they handed him a mic.
― This Is Not An ILX Username (LaMonte), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)
yeah standup comics/albums much huger in the 70s, plus much wider exposure via carson (and later letterman). kevin hart is the only standup big like that right now that i could imagine hosting and even there i'm not sure that lorne knows who he is, frankly he's more likely to have a hit tv show or movie and then host like bernie mac. if sarah silverman counts (and she shouldn't right?) maybe her.
― balls, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)
Martin Lawrence also effectively ended the days of most monologues being actual monologues where the host could just stand there and talk and possibly ad lib a little -- after he went to blue they started making every monologue a sketch about cast members interrupting the monologue.
― some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)
