iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

people who fear being underground maybe? or perhaps there was a time when buses were legitimately safer than subways

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but who's gonna mug you on the lirr!

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 01:23 (thirteen years ago)

Bus easier to get onto if your old or disabled?

badg, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

that's true but the $5.50 buses are mostly for professionals and old/disabled people take the regular bus

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

it is, as they say, a mystery

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

The New York City subway system will begin running limited service tomorrow, and limited Metro-North and LIRR service will start today at 2 p.m., Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced. There will be no subway service south of 34th St. in Manhattan as there is no power south of 34th St., and the MTA will supplement subway service with a bus bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan as crews continue to pump out the East River subway tubes. Full service is expected to be restored slowly.

According to earlier reports, the MTA may still have to conduct riderless testing of the subway system tonight to judge the safety and status of the infrastructure. If everything passes, the plan Cuomo announced will be put into place. As of now, the MTA has not yet anounced which part of what lines will run, and the authority hasn’t determined what to do with the time that has ticked off of unlimited ride MetroCards. But it seems that some subway service will come back on Thursday.

Details to follow.

obv give everybody an extra week

The Qm4 had a deceptively short line this morning. But then we waited 45 mins for the first one to come, which took about half the line and then left. Second one came an hour later, completely full. Then I waited god knows how much longer and finally gave up. Meanwhile, empty downtown-bound express buses kept passing. Guessing no one is going to water st right now. Perhaps the MTA could redirect some resources with that in mind.

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

if they were empty it was probably for a different reason, like they were going from place a to place b. there's no bus from queens to manhattan that's gonna be empty - no matter where it's going.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

even if you had gotten on that bus hurting, it would have realistically been 2+ hours to get to manhattan. traffic was insane.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

where did you get the subway service update? not seeing it on the mta site yet.

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

secondavenuesagas, following the press conference that's happening right now

Gov. Cuomo says 14 of 23 subway lines will have service, but no clear indication yet of what those will be.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

E train seems like a likely candidate unless something about the lower manhattan portion of the line makes it impossible to run the whole thing.

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

yes, I would say that's among the most likely

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

hooray! work!

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

That would be my likeliest way to work if work (26th st) even has power tomorrow...

I'm guessing there will be a fair bit of A train in Brooklyn combined with a stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge in my future.
Suppose we'll also get the J/M/Z in Brooklyn relatively soon too.

from MTA: these East River tunnels are still wet: R - A/C - L - 7. Some of these trains could be shifted to other tunnels.

@omniality Lhota wasn't given a chance to talk until now. MTA will deliver details at a technical briefing later today.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

wait I guess the f is the only queens blvd line running at all

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

good luck NYC

乒乓, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

so weird that the G isn't running

乒乓, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

tunnel has water in it is what I hear

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

hmm, express bus vs f train tomorrow (as only line running) seems like a tossup. I guess I just have to bite the bullet and go in super early.

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

you will have to be aggressive to get on the f, but you're prob better off than people who don't live in forest hills, because by the time the trains get to western queens it's gonna be hopeless. I would go that route unless the rumors I hear about carpooling ends up being true.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

I have a potential carpool set up just in case

and bloomie sez the 4 East River bridges restricted to vehicles with 3 or more people for Thursday and Friday, 6AM to midnight.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

ugh just spent 40 mins in a bus basically going nowhere. didn't want to walk but no choice really.

iatee, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

yeah friend who works in times square basically had to walk from times square to long island city before he finally got a cab home. hoping the F tomorrow will alleviate things a little but I'm not hugely optimistic.

Knut Horowitz, Able-Bodied Investment Banker and Ladies Man (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder why the 7 isn't running from queensborough plaza to flushing? I think I'll try and bike it tomorrow--even reverse commute, I'm not sure about the buses.

With schools out, the libraries are going to be packed with kids (if they somehow find out we're open--ssshhhh).

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

no idea why, but it sure makes my morning less fun

iatee, Thursday, 1 November 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

I'm gonna have to walk from wburg to penn station on friday I think : (

乒乓, Thursday, 1 November 2012 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

Debating just walking from here to work -- it could be about the equivalent of a car ride (2.5 hours)
