the hotel qt is this new andre balazs hotel (the standard LA, mercer hotel, raleigh miami, chateau marmont) - near times square. rooms not that bad size, flat screen tvs, swimming pool with a bar and a dj booth.

anyone stayed at the Seton? THAT'S how cheap i'm looking at now. only problem is i can't book until my new card arrives which should be tomorrow but probably won't be and time's running out. fingers crossed...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

went and booked the Seton - works out at only £35 a night but with shared bathroom facilities. i'll report back on this place at the time as seems tolerable and remarkably cheap. better start a proper thread for NYC trip now...

New York City: Hotel Riverview: "The place is a dump - AVOID!"
September 23, 2004: A TripAdvisor Member, Washington, DC

The place is a dump. The rooms are tiny (about the size of a closet), don't have AC, and the TVs rarely get proper reception. The shared showers / toilets are filthy, and the staff is rude. Aside from being a rundown hangout for transvestite prostitutes and drug users, it is also used as an S.R.O. hotel by the city to place homeless people. There is little security, no room service, and a rarely working elevator. Safety and health are questionable. AVOID THIS HOTEL! Just pay an extra 20 bucks a night for a real hotel, it will be worth it.

BTW if you don't want the luxury of the Hyatt, there's a cheaper hotel in Jersey City - I think the Marriott Courtyard, that's spitting distance from the Pavonia PATH train (the one right across the water from NYC)

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, it might not be cheaper.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

the prices in that article are not accurate.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

i can't remember the name of the place i stayed last time i stayed in manhattan, it was fairly cheap, had my own bathroom and was within walking distance of the bowery ballroom.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

i still say priceline is best bet cause you choose stars in addition to price. i once got a nice room at hilton for like $100 during a holiday weekend.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

i did that with hotwire once and was stuck down in the financial district!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

from what i've heard anecdotally, priceline might get you a good deal in some pretty good hotels, but they usually stick you in their least attractive rooms

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

also, it's not uncommon to find cheap hotel rooms in big cities over summer or winter weekends when locals go out of town

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

through the hotel itself

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

yikes! priceline lets you pick neighborhood(s), which can be helpful but you have to pay attn to the boundaries of the neighborhoods you choose (my mom got a hotel by the u.n. once when she picked "midtown east" which i know isn't THAT far a walk from trains, but she does not know the city, gets nervous, etc.).

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

why would locals affect hotels? they're not staying in them!

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

they don't, necessarily, but they're indicators of how attractive the destination is at that particular time

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

comparatively-speaking

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

yeah my hotel was supposedly in "soho"!! it was down like on wall st! v strange :\

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

that's totally subjective, though... i think in general ppl want to get away for the weekend, whether that means a city person going to a nice b&b in the country or a suburbanite visiting the 'big city' for their long weekend. i don't think that says anything about how attractive the destination itself is, just who's going to be there. i.e., when the locals get out the tourists come in, but don't they usually call that a peak time and jack UP the price?

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

that was an xp i did not mean the definition of soho was subjective ;)

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

hahhahaha i was gonna say...next yr gonna be claiming jersey city as part of soho...

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

yes and i also live in the e. village lol

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

my mom got a hotel by the u.n. once when she picked "midtown east"

well that's technically correct unless they want to get down to the "tudor city" level of specificity

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

yes, it is correct. i didn't say it wasn't, but when someone from out of town thinks 'midtown' they forget the outer avenues because they're not really familiar with the area and are thinking of midtown east as grand central, etc. hence, checking the map first before selecting neighborhood so you realize/remind yourself that you may not be 1 block from 'everything' when you pick midtown.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

Hotel 31! Bargain, and where I'm staying again later this summer.

Also, the Chelsea Star near MSG. When I stayed almost a couple of years ago they were undergoing fitting new apartment rooms. They let me stay in one of them at no extra cost, cheap as anything.

Ste, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

kevin, you were maybe at the off soho suites...?

Surmounter, Saturday, 8 September 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I stayed at the Sohotel on Broome St. in 2003 for about $100/night in 2003, and now it's $200+ a night on average!? Anyway, I kinda liked it.

two weeks pass...

My in-laws are coming to NY for a week in late September and RS and I will be joining them for part of that time. Since there will be 5 of us total and for a whole week I was wondering if a week long apt rental might be the most economical option. Does anyone know anything about this type of thing and have any recs?

ENBB, Sunday, 17 August 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

BUMP

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

second home on second avenue, maybe. it's a very small b&b kind of place in the east village. they have a couple of suite-type rooms that sleep 2-5 people, and prices are supposed to be very reasonable.

i don't have any specific recs for apartment-letting services, although there are a quite a few of them according to google.

lauren, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

People put apartments to sublet on craigslist all the time!

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

also, a lot of the agencies put their sublets on craigslist as well as their own sites.

with parents involved, i think i'd feel a bit better going through an agency and having an office to contact in case anything goes wrong. plus you don't have to worry about an illegal sublet.

lauren, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

does anyone know about union square inn? my parents made a res there and they are not super fancy needy or anything but they also want me to go check it out to make sure it's ok. but i keep forgetting/running out of town. now i don't want to go to manhattan for the rest of the weekend.

tehresa, Saturday, 4 April 2009 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

i know nothing about new york, but if you want leonard cohen to write a song about the time you sucked him off, it'll have to be the chelsea

Hampton inn (as a chain) will also guarantee connecting rooms if you request those at booking, which is why we often end up there.

There are buckets of new hotels in bk from the ace at the high end to the Even (???) at the low end; close to the blue green red n orange lines so u can get to whatever side of manhattan u want.

There is something to staying in a midtown hotel if it’s ur kids’ first time in the city. Concrete bunghole and whatnot

thanks all! i was also looking at the hotel indigo in brooklyn as it's right next to the L line

If i may w-bug is not that great a visit these days in terms of… hipness? Idk williamsburg is a drag

Also ur marrying urself to the L train (or g to the e/m) which may not be operating in a reliable way

There's an Air B&B hotel (it's a hotel, but all bookings are handled by Air B&B) in the Lower East Side called "Untitled at 3 Freeman Alley" that's actually very reasonably priced. It's about a two block walk away from the 2nd Ave. station on the F.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 7 February 2024 18:47 (two years ago)

everyone who lives here recommends staying in hotels in Brooklyn to save money, which makes sense, but I don't know if they realize that downtown brooklyn/williamsburg hotels are no cheaper and often more expensive than the Manhattan equivalents.

some friends of friends stayed there recently and they did not like it iirc

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 7 February 2024 20:22 (two years ago)

eh, I haven't been since 2019 but unless you're doing something late night/early morning and don't want to limp back to a hotel, staying in Manhattan and bouncing over to Brooklyn for the day wasn't that inconvenient

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 7 February 2024 20:47 (two years ago)

Not cheap (but not uber-expensive either) is the Maritime Hotel. Good location (Meatpacking District, w. 16th St.), cozy lobby to lounge in plus neat round windows in each room.

henry s, Wednesday, 7 February 2024 21:32 (two years ago)

The Andaz Bryant Park, across the street from the NY Public Library, may be pricier but would be a good home base and is a really cool hotel.

Archer and The Refinery are also both in the garment district (just south of Times Square), so you have the midtown home base for getting around but on streets that aren't hectic.

Doubletree Financial District was totally fine, reasonably priced.

Stayed here this past summer, thought it was good and very um contemporary Brooklyn. Same group owns other Brooklyn hotels
