The folks I talked to told of non-stop phone calls, TV ads and radio ads, porches littered with pamphlets, people knocking on the door every day, sometimes multiple times a day (sorry).

Yeah, in 2008 I canvassed in Iowa and kind of felt bad when I knocked on someone's door and they told me that someone had already been there earlier in the day.

anyone read any good nonfiction recently? i'm in a reading rut

in norbit (n/a), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

Never too late for "Nixonland." Lots of people like that book "Wild."

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 29 October 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

maybe i'll try nixonland. i want to read nate silver's book but the library won't have it forever and i can't put anything on hold because the three books i've had on hold forever are still "request pending." maybe i should just buy it.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

'spillover' supposed to be rly good, just got from cpl but i'm not in nonfic mood lately, too unfocused.

JuliaA, Monday, 29 October 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

i am reading about accusations of satanic abuse in day cares, so i can't really recommend that. Are you looking for fun, historical, or alarming nonfiction?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

yes

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

though spillover sounds a little too alarming

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

how about a biography?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

ok.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

No wait, have you ever read Studs Turkel's Division Street?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

nope

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 29 October 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

Then you should consider reading that. I read a really interesting book a while ago about Russian organized crime too, I think it was called Red Mafiya. You might like it. You can read about how Taylor Dayne got her start.

I just finished Daniel Okrent's Last Call (about Prohibition), which I thought was pretty good. It took me a while to finish it, but it takes me a while to finish everything.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Monday, 29 October 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

It isn't non-fiction, but I finished The Fountain Overflows by Rebecca West a couple of weeks ago and it was remarkable, best book I've read in ~10 years.

Hat tip to La Lech for letting me know about the 101.1 FM format change -- been enjoying WYQI or whatever they're now calling themselves. Driving around this weekend, I heard Jesus Jones, Coolio, Eve, The Fray, Everything But the Girl, Robyn S., etc., alongside the odd current hit by Taylor Swift or Ellie Goulding.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Monday, 29 October 2012 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

Yes.com shows they recently went from Adele into Heavy D: http://www.yes.com/#WIQI

(Not a fat joke -- just saying I like the variety.)

Holy crap - the new Mariano's by my work that is opening tomorrow has search lights flashing on dancers in party dresses inside each of the four landings of its glass stairwell.

I heard Pump Up the Jam on that station and it made my day. They seem a little heavy on the Third Eye Blind though -- I've heard them at least 4x, including that "I will under-staaayeeeyaaaaaaaaaand" song.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 29 October 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

I *thought* I heard "Pump Up the Jam" the other day but it turned out to be "100%" by Crystal Waters.

we rewatched halloween the other night and there's a pretty awesome part where donald pleasance is driving to michael myers' hometown and he's supposedly in rural illinois but it was clearly filmed in southern california, because there are mountains in the background

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

I am listening to this on-line Q101 station because I am in need of something light and fun and it's not bad BUT they have a really hateful promo for their "Q Club" in which they promise, as a benefit of membership, "pre- and post-op tranny porn." :( Also waaaaay too much Dave Matthews Band.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

Wait, that's not what you all were talking about. What are you all talking about up there?

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

I figured it out!

http://www.i101fm.com/

Time for Demi Lovato.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

Forgot to mention that I heard "Pony" on it the other day.
I love new stations when they are in identity crisis mode, like when that station THIS started playing basically anything they could find.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Wasn't it called THIS? Was it THAT? I can't remember. My feet hurt and I'm ready for something fun to happen. Now that all of my exciting events have passed I've got precious little to look forward to in the next few weeks :(

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

Does anyone want to
* DDPP tomorrow?
* karaoke Friday?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

we're out of town this weekend

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

I think it was called THIS.

Hey, maybe on DDPP. I was going to go to the gym anyway so if the timing is right, that might be fun.

No on karaoke. I'm meeting my former colleagues out for drinks! Hopefully they have many ridiculous stories to tell me.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

it is THIS. THIS is still around.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm willing to give it another shot after the TD incident, but I can't deny that I'm apprehensive.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

DDPP got big-ups in the Reader last week. Could karaoke Friday...

pretty even gender split (Eazy), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

Ugh then maybe I don't want to DDPP this week

I'm also not sure about karaoke because I have some wrangling to do still.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

i hate orchestrating social events

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

hate is a strong word -- it makes me uncomfortable and i would rather not do it
how's that

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

I'm apprehensive, too, and also I have what I believe to be the best workout playlist ever curated and it's hard to put that aside for somebody else's potentially wrong-headed idea of dance music.

Oh gross, this station is playing Sheryl Crow now. Have I ever told you how much I dislike Sheryl Crow? I associated "All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun" with a really traumatic breakup, and it was all downhill from there.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

if it MAKES YOU HAPPPEEEEEEEEE

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

I FUCKING HATE THAT SONG

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

This is "Strong Enough," which I also hate. Lie to me but please don't leave! GROSS SHUT UP SO GROSS

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

I like "My Favorite Mistake" though, gotta admit. Super catchy hooks in that song and it reminds me of shopping for tires in the middle of the night at WalMart.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

Now every time I think about Sheryl Crow, I think about how she tried to ignite a national campaign against wasting toilet paper and I laugh.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

My favorite mistake: shopping for tires in the middle of the night at Walmart.

Wait... what?

carl agatha, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

you guys should just have a two-woman DDPP in one of your apartments, and sarah can come and sit on a chair and wiggle around

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

I heard that song while shopping for tires at ~ 2:30am at Walmart.

I have one woman DDPP in my apartment several times a week.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta stay in the kitchen though, too much squeaking otherwise.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

No, I mean wait what about the toiler paper thing.

the situation n/a describes sounds way too much like he's setting Sarah up for lapdances from LL and me.
