Oooh, I've always wondered about those whiskeys. I like AB Premium a lot but typically I stick with CC 20 yr.

Anyone had that Redbreast 12 cask strength? I'm curious.

How much/often do you have to drink to undermine health?

Per health, you should worry less about your liver (at first) and more about the calories. A shot of whiskey can be about 100 calories, I think, so a bottle of Wild Turkey would run about ... 1700 calories? Which is 2 and a half Big Macs? So obviously not healthy to make a habit of it, so to speak.

A lot of cocktails hit around 250-500 calories per drink, easily.

otm

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

the answer is to pound that bottle of wild turkey while scarfing down on two and a half big macs

balances everything out iirc

Question: my dad told me that he stopped drinking Manhattans when they "started to go down too easy." I've always liked that way of explaining it, but I didn't know if it had an origin?

aimless- power's is a good example of what i'd consider a pure 'irish' whiskey in terms of taste. Test is simple, make a hot whiskey and if the aftertaste doesn't clash with clove, sugar or lemon you're close imo.

Powers/paddy's will always be the basic standard here btw, though you can get alternatives if you want to spend more.

as I said to a coworker who said he switched to whiskey for the winter instead of beer since he was less active:
"nonsense, a pint of whiskey surely has more calories than a pint of beer!"

I would still drink whiskey over beer though since no carbs in whiskey.

乒乓, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

what do you think the sugars in whiskey are?

I stand corrected, the usda does not think so

There's a reason they call rocket fuel. Because it's basically, you know, rocket fuel.

True story: a lot of American whiskey distilleries shut down for a time during WWII and actually did shift to producing jet fuel. That's one reason Scotch caught on in America, because all the servicemen were coming home with the only whiskey they could find.

Only a couple steps between the ethanol blend in my car and the ethanol blend in my whiskey

Was seeking easy sipping Canadian whiskey; was recommended Collingwood by LCBO guy; cool girl swept past, picked up a bottle and said 'he's right! it's delicious, and from my hometown'. Bought it. A bit disappointed. Not complex enough, I guess, and too maple-ey.

I got a bottle of the Canadian Club 12 Year as a gift and was initially skeptical because to me Canadian whiskey is Crown Royal, which is what teen metalheads vomit up in your sister's car, but wow it was tasty and didn't last long.

ban canadian whiskey

Aimless, Saturday, 27 October 2012 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

why?

dylannn, Saturday, 27 October 2012 01:16 (thirteen years ago)

canadian whiskey is just too sweet and character-deprived to merit the proud name of whiskey. it's all top and no bottom.

Aimless, Saturday, 27 October 2012 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

that's a good description of the Collingwood, but since I've just seen Argo I'm feeling extremely pro-Canadian and will make it my mission to find Canadian whiskeys with bottom.

ljubljana, Saturday, 27 October 2012 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

but i think bourbon tastes super sweet and lacking compared to the ryes i like! for complex and not very sweet, alberta premium 25 year is what i'd pour you. 100% rye grain. complex. farm yards and sawdust, burnt sugar, wintergreen copenhagen, unripe kiwi, spicy as fuck. a perfect mix of wood/water/grain. or wiser's 18 year, which is amazing and full of character and has a subtle, pleasant sweetness balanced by peppery rye spice and a deep, mean pungent bottom end.

dylannn, Saturday, 27 October 2012 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

*takes notes*

ljubljana, Saturday, 27 October 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

A good rye whiskey made in canada is ok by me. It's the stuff that gets labeled as "canadian whiskey" I was downward thumbing.

Suggestions of good shops in San Francisco (or maybe San Jose)?

I will be without a car and rather short on time though, so easy access suggestions may have to trump all else. I'd like to pick up a bottle of something...

Good point. In my Irish family, whiskey is a household necessity, like gauze pads and sewing thread - even though I don't like it much on a regular basis. It's for occasions like when your grandmother has cancer and stuff.

It beats the shit out of Bailey's though...I love it when I go to my non-Irish side of the family and they offer a Bailey's like it means anything.

โตเกียวเหมียวเหมียว aka Magical Imaginative Ingenius Wonder Wo (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 13:10 (thirteen years ago)

I just bought a bottle of Redbreast 12, which is a pretty easy, flavorful sip. But I only bought it because I couldn't find the cask strength at the time, and when I did come across one I didn't want to buy it and have another bottle of Irish whiskey (which I don't have a lot of use for right now).

Recommend this as a Bailey's alternative:

OMG it seems like a pretty bad thing that the most exciting thing happening in my life is that Dickel Rye is coming soon...

Had an impromptu taste test between Old Grandad and Old Overholt last week at a party. Overholt wins IMO.

overholt was my hurricane drink when the beer ran out
