now can they finally start shipping all those Lightning cable converters? They *way* understocked these, and they should have been available at the iPhone 5 launch.

and given the authentication chip in the new cable, it's still going to be awhile before Lightning-compatible accessories ship. And only a few current devices support Airplay.

hmm, regular hard drive is standard -- I'm a little nervous about how much extra the fusion drive is going to be.

Base model + 3TB + fusion + optical drive = f-oldin' money

WilliamC, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

I don't mean the display of the copy, I mean the sheer amount: it's really prolix and wordy and goes on for ages, like those 80s ads

Can't see any reason to buy an ipad mini.

smaller

Ha wait, beaten to the punch. This guy has exactly the type of ad I was thinking about http://nomore.metaismurder.com/post/31479133829/that-new-iphone-is-great-in-my-opinion-but

I would like one loaded up with Ordnance Survey maps to go walking with. Unfortunately, this would also mean paying for the cellular version as you don't get GPS otherwise.

Can't see any reason to buy an ipad mini.

only reasons I can see are books for adults and education for kids. bollocks to typing on a tiny keyboard.

for $250 this looks awfully tempting...

I'm only getting 5 frames of info, about the same as in the other categories such as "features" and less wordy than "built-in apps". But the font and background is hard to read compared to the others and not very attractive.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

My iPad 1 crashes all the time and yet I can't seem to justify the idea of buying a new one. Neither the mini nor the 4 seem like a big leap forward to me even from my own iPad.

waht

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)

yep, no pricing on that fusion drive. we'll see. if the anti-glare monitor is any good and calibrates OK, we might go iMac for the print design guys at last.

the "books for adults" thing could be really useful for med students/residents imo. lots of dece med reference apps, and a mini will fit into a white coat pocket I think. plus pulling out yr phone to check something looks tacky. narrow market, sure, but if the Lightning connector can take peripherals (camera, card reader, etc) I think you'll see uses that would've been clumsy with an iPad, and worthless with an iPhone

New Apple Lust Objects for 2010 to 2012

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

every tech news article I've read makes no mention of the ipad 4

it's like: mini ipad, imacs, did they mention anything else? prolly not

space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

i've seen several articles that mention the iPad 4, but even more about iPad 3 buyers whining that their tablet isn't the latest and greatest anymore

Lee626, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

like there's an implicit guarantee from Apple that the next upgrade can't arrive in less than a year since the last one

^ my favourite butthurt so far

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

Haa so butthurt. Only halfway reasonable objection i can think of is that they shanked people on the used value (the 3 took a tumble yesterday); not the oh so many feels

stet, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

my concern was (and is) that art/drawing/sketching/writing apps weren't fast enough on the 3, and that devs who were optimising their apps will suddenly go 'oh good no fine we don't have to fix our apps anymore'

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

that said, I've already had 7–8 months out of my 3 and am still happy with it

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

real apple fans only buy even-numbered releases anyway

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

I don't get why they're still selling the two-generations-old iPad 2 which looks antiquated next to the less-expensive Mini - it's almost as big and same resolution, weighs half as much, has vastly better cameras, LTE rather than 3G, Bluetooth 4, and Siri. Much better deal IMO.

Lee626, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:18 (thirteen years ago)

trying to thread the market-segmentation needle

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

xp to lee: it sells. also, the mini has reduced utility. it just does. typing will be even more cramped than it is on a maxipad, and art apps will be less accurate (i.e. fingers won't be shrinking).

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

As always it depends on what you use it for. As a gamer, I find that many games are harder to play on the iPad because the increased size makes it harder to do things as quickly as I could on the iPhone do to the greater distance between objects.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

due to, rather

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, the minipad will appeal to a whole separate (but not exclusive) range of customers, especially those who read books, those who play certain types of games, those who are 7yo and go to school &c.

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

i just think the relatively small cost increment to the ipad 4 is so easily worth it for anyone who wants a full-sizer.

actually, ipad 3 refurbs from the apple online site are really going to be the best deal in the coming months

Lee626, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

grandparents will still want the bigger one.

dan selzer, Thursday, 25 October 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

the funny thing is that I really want a minipad, even though the tech is decidedly old, the screen is not up to my requirements and I haven't a single reason to own one. fuck you apple.

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 25 October 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

that article is awesomely entitled.

s.clover, Thursday, 25 October 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

so this is what the new Lightning connector is really all about?

Lee626, Thursday, 25 October 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

ok while we're talking of the joys of upgrading - quick semi-tech question: having been scarred by seeing my iPhone 3G fall into obsolescence after updating iOSes and apps, I'm now a bit paranoid about updating anything on my iP4 - should I worry about apps updates or are new iOSes the memory drains?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 25 October 2012 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, for the most part it's a oneway street when upgrading so you want to tread lightly. I've been running ios6 on my ip4 for a couple weeks now. battery life is weird, some days I end up having to charge halfway through the day, other times it lasts all day, and I'm kind of a hawk about killing apps I'm not using.

haven't noticed any issues with apps, maps is obv the problem but I've been using mapquest (which has free turn-by-turn voice features) or google maps thru safari if I have to look up an address. the biggest pain is not being able to hit maps straight from my contacts, but it's a minor one. I've only traveled in well mapped out areas so I haven't had any issues with apple's maps getting me lost, however its GPS integration stinks - it will suddenly put me on some other road and recalculate the route, have me slowly drift off the map, or not update my location at all.

being automatically able to text back a person whose call you can't take is pretty sweet tho.

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

plus I haven't upgraded an app and had it stop working, and I update things whenever ones available

this may change when apple launches the iphone 5s in january

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
