right so I assume devs will suddenly stop optimising their laggy apps for the a5x ipad because now there's a new one and they don't have to

brilliant

Wonder what sort of geek bench scores the new iMac will get. If it matches my 2008 Mac Pro I'll probably switch

stet, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

I guess it's been almost two years since I got this 2006/2007 (lol) Mac Pro that I did a processor swap on and put a ssd in. I would imagine an imac outperforms it by a fair bit but... I've got eight cores! And a shitload of hard drives.

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

looks like you can't buy the current ipad *or* the previous one on the online shop, just the ipad 2

uh, k

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

what's this 'another' panic attack btw, i don't recall ever having an apple panic attack

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

it's the product apple doesn't want you to have

iPod touch will always feel like a modest option to the iPhone, since there's no data plan or forced contract... arguably you just don't need a smartphone if you're carrying it around with you in a city with plenty of WiFi

― Nhex, Tuesday, October 23, 2012 4:24 PM (13 minutes ago)

For me, the iPod touch is less an "iPhone without the phone" than an iPad that fits in my pocket (which is why I don't think the iPad mini will destroy iTouch sales). Around here, wi-fi is in just about every home, office, library, bookstore, restaurant, and hotel - so it's easy enough to get online when I need to, and I don't have to pay for an expensive data contract. But I do need to pay the monthly bill on my cheap flip-phone, so I wind up paying about half of what I would for an iPhone instead of the iPod touch/dumbphone duo. It would be nice to only have to carry one device for both purposes, and there are some times where nearly-fulltime internet access would be useful (i.e. in the car or public transport). So I'm planning on trading up to an iPhone 5 as soon as I can decide whether to sign my life over to Verizon or Sprint for the next 2 years. The former offers widespread LTE and better coverage, but ridiculously expensive by-the-GB monthly data plans; Sprint offers unlimited data (albeit without tethering) but almost no LTE coverage yet, and somewhat inferior voice and 3G coverage as well - although their voice quality is top-notch. Tough choice.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

perhaps the entry level (minipad) us$329 price point is to stave off comparisons with the entry level us$299 ipod touch

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

which has twice the storage

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I think ipad mini is not priced low enough to kill kindle/android, but it is close enough to an ipod touch that some folks will go for the mini over the ipod, but we beat that cannibalization topic to death last week

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

yes

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

Wtf is the deal with the ad copy on the "design" pages on apple.com now? Both iPad and mini sites have these 1880s-style slabs of text

stet, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

interested to know how many people will ask me if I'm getting a minipad (lol like I have a single reason to buy one)

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

does this mean the bigger one is gonna be called... the maxi-ipad

*tips sunglasses*

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

the text on the "design" link on both looks normal to me (in Firefox)

i think Apple thinks the (not all that large) price premium over the Google/Amazon tablets won't dissuade too many ppl, especially since Apple made a good case for why it's more useful (significantly larger screen space in real-life use, compatibility with 25K existing iPad specific apps that Android tablets can't come close to matching, etc.)

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

oi, I came up with maxipad yonks ago, gerroff my patch sunshine xp

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

xp OTOH the "features" link on the full-size iPad is cut off on the right side, at least in Firefox - completely unreadable

Also, the Apple home page and iPad description doesn't make it at all clear that there's a new fourth-gen iPad available at all.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

it's got a 'the new ipad' tile at the bottom, which is exactly at the last one said, so yeah, odd

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

it doesn't really *do* anything new though, apart from just beefing up shit that probably should have been in there six months ago

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

"Features" on full-size iPad on apple.com not working for me at all in Safari either. iMovie and Siri descriptions completely cut off on right 1/3 of screen.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

could be server load (didn't a similar thing happen after a recent product launch?)

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

style sheet not fully loading or something

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

now can they finally start shipping all those Lightning cable converters? They *way* understocked these, and they should have been available at the iPhone 5 launch.

and given the authentication chip in the new cable, it's still going to be awhile before Lightning-compatible accessories ship. And only a few current devices support Airplay.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

hmm, regular hard drive is standard -- I'm a little nervous about how much extra the fusion drive is going to be.

Base model + 3TB + fusion + optical drive = f-oldin' money

WilliamC, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

I don't mean the display of the copy, I mean the sheer amount: it's really prolix and wordy and goes on for ages, like those 80s ads

Can't see any reason to buy an ipad mini.

smaller

Ha wait, beaten to the punch. This guy has exactly the type of ad I was thinking about http://nomore.metaismurder.com/post/31479133829/that-new-iphone-is-great-in-my-opinion-but

stet, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

I would like one loaded up with Ordnance Survey maps to go walking with. Unfortunately, this would also mean paying for the cellular version as you don't get GPS otherwise.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Can't see any reason to buy an ipad mini.

only reasons I can see are books for adults and education for kids. bollocks to typing on a tiny keyboard.

(he says, posting from an iphone)

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

for $250 this looks awfully tempting...

I'm only getting 5 frames of info, about the same as in the other categories such as "features" and less wordy than "built-in apps". But the font and background is hard to read compared to the others and not very attractive.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

My iPad 1 crashes all the time and yet I can't seem to justify the idea of buying a new one. Neither the mini nor the 4 seem like a big leap forward to me even from my own iPad.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)

yep, no pricing on that fusion drive. we'll see. if the anti-glare monitor is any good and calibrates OK, we might go iMac for the print design guys at last.

/Can't see any reason to buy an ipad mini./

the "books for adults" thing could be really useful for med students/residents imo. lots of dece med reference apps, and a mini will fit into a white coat pocket I think. plus pulling out yr phone to check something looks tacky. narrow market, sure, but if the Lightning connector can take peripherals (camera, card reader, etc) I think you'll see uses that would've been clumsy with an iPad, and worthless with an iPhone
