im guessing no, cuz apple never does the lose-money-for-market-share thing

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

ya, guess theyll bring the price down on the original once they introduce the 2nd gen

--bob marley (lag∞n), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

I just wishing the older ipod touch would go lower :(

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

ipad mini not thin enough

乒乓, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

its so weird that there still arent any android itouch type devices, allows apple to jack the price up

--bob marley (lag∞n), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

Toby: yeah, very light: 1/2lb heavier than Air

Sounds good. Suspect I'll be getting one of those, then.

it's prob not worth the cost to produce them... if phones go for like $800 unsubsidized and these things are basically phones without the radio... selling them for $200-$300 has gotta be rough

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

if they can sell an ipad mini for 320 i think they can go lower than 3 for an itouch, iphones fwiw are highly profitable

we're going to have to wait for the reviews

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

So they downgraded the resolution from "the new ipad" to this? Back to the ipad 2 res? Weird choice.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

damn

乒乓, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

well they downgraded the pixel count to ipad2 levels not the resolution, to keep the cost down id imagine

--bob marley (lag∞n), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

Oh so it's the same res per inch as the 3? Okay.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

it's actually the same screen as the ipad 3 but with the same pixel counts as the ipad 1 giving the same ppi as the ipad 2 but not quite putting it in the same category as the ipad 4

乒乓, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

its in between is my understanding

--bob marley (lag∞n), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

does ipad mini have flush headphone jack

MVP ("most viking poster") 2012 (cozen), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not an Apple fanboy but I have to hand it to Tim Cook - this is the first keynote he's given where he really approached "reality distortion field" charisma - making the new products seem way ahead of the competition (at least if you don't analyze it too closely). With all of the pre-announcement focus on the iPad mini (and to a lesser extent the 13" RMBP), hardly anyone was anticipating the iPad 4 this early (except maybe to switch over to the lighting connector) but not with so many upgrades, or the super-slim iMac.

Retina display on iPad mini would have been nice but would have driven price and size up unacceptably and battery life down (and besides, they need something to make Mini buyers upgrade to the Mini 2 next year), but the smaller screen vs. iPad 2 should make pixels less visible. Also, I like the iPod touch 5 but it seems even more overpriced now. Surprised it's sold so well.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

the iMac has been due for a redesign, so i'm happy to see it finally get one. I got mine in early '08, a little more than a year after the aluminum ones debuted, I think, and they haven't substantially changed until now. i'm sure they'll have a retina display iMac at some point, but a 27' version would probably be ungodly expensive (not to mention the video hardware needed to push it). good chance i'll pick one up early next year.

iPod touch will always feel like a modest option to the iPhone, since there's no data plan or forced contract... arguably you just don't need a smartphone if you're carrying it around with you in a city with plenty of WiFi

Nhex, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

right so I assume devs will suddenly stop optimising their laggy apps for the a5x ipad because now there's a new one and they don't have to

brilliant

Wonder what sort of geek bench scores the new iMac will get. If it matches my 2008 Mac Pro I'll probably switch

stet, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

I guess it's been almost two years since I got this 2006/2007 (lol) Mac Pro that I did a processor swap on and put a ssd in. I would imagine an imac outperforms it by a fair bit but... I've got eight cores! And a shitload of hard drives.

For me, the iPod touch is less an "iPhone without the phone" than an iPad that fits in my pocket (which is why I don't think the iPad mini will destroy iTouch sales). Around here, wi-fi is in just about every home, office, library, bookstore, restaurant, and hotel - so it's easy enough to get online when I need to, and I don't have to pay for an expensive data contract. But I do need to pay the monthly bill on my cheap flip-phone, so I wind up paying about half of what I would for an iPhone instead of the iPod touch/dumbphone duo. It would be nice to only have to carry one device for both purposes, and there are some times where nearly-fulltime internet access would be useful (i.e. in the car or public transport). So I'm planning on trading up to an iPhone 5 as soon as I can decide whether to sign my life over to Verizon or Sprint for the next 2 years. The former offers widespread LTE and better coverage, but ridiculously expensive by-the-GB monthly data plans; Sprint offers unlimited data (albeit without tethering) but almost no LTE coverage yet, and somewhat inferior voice and 3G coverage as well - although their voice quality is top-notch. Tough choice.

Lee626, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

perhaps the entry level (minipad) us$329 price point is to stave off comparisons with the entry level us$299 ipod touch

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

which has twice the storage

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I think ipad mini is not priced low enough to kill kindle/android, but it is close enough to an ipod touch that some folks will go for the mini over the ipod, but we beat that cannibalization topic to death last week

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

yes

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

Wtf is the deal with the ad copy on the "design" pages on apple.com now? Both iPad and mini sites have these 1880s-style slabs of text
