I spent much of my youth in love with Toronto, but Montreal obliterated much of that when I finally visited it for the first time a few years back. I've heard Toronto described, derisively one assumes, as "a Canadian city for Americans." This has nothing to do with MY preference for one over the other, but Montreal feels more unique to me in a way in which may or may not be uniquely Canadian (over familiarity with Toronto at this point prob has a lot to do with it too.

This is a perennial comment, but: nobody in Toronto cares what Montreallers think about us + we don't talk smack about Montreal bc your city is awesome + visit us and eat of our delicious ethnic food, warm yourself

i always thought montreal was more touristy than toronto, but maybe that's just bc i have relatives in the toronto? i dunno, i mean i hear way more stories about young people crossing the border to visit montreal than i do toronto

which like a) great show(s). b) great venue - i saw joanna newsom at the Ukranian Nat'l Federation a few years back and more recently xiu xiu and BRAIDS and it's always so lovely.

i wasn't in montreal until the following september. iirc, they played the black sheep inn just outside of ottawa around then, and a bunch of us in high school spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to best get out there.

I've been to Sault Ste. Marie and Cranbrook, BC. They were not exotic, though they seemed so at the time b/c I was a youngster and tout le francais all over the place was thrilling.

Plus all the extra British U's in various wourds.

jer, fap is an acronym for "fancy a pint?' and "a fap" became the ILX only word for any kind of social event organised by ILXors even if pints or drinks were not involved.

haha. yeah. it confused me for AGES.

but when i started here i ventured into the scary boards of in-jokes and tried to figure out what best beloved whatever was. i quickly returned to the relative safety of ILM and the gay threads.
