Yeah I can see it. In others and self. I think the problem is far deeper than that, though, the rigid enforcement of athletic competition upon "art practice", plus the psychological damage (or what have you) of spending five hours a day doing exercises, fucks people up

I get along much better now w classical people than I did ten years ago, actively reconnecting with friends from school and so forth

My dad got a fever, we're on our way to emergency, boooo, relaxing family time turns to purposeful family time

Yeah my dad is a Medievalist fruit, he's got rubbings in the wall and Caravaggio prints and writes w calligraphy pens and owns and plays a harpsichord, a pipe organ building hobbyist. Currently retired but still does entomological consulting. Was SysOp for a bumblebee-focused BBS in the 80s and 90s called BombusNet. Nobody's business I guess but he's a cool guy and I hope these doctor's know what they're doing

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

oh boy sorry to read that good luck

surm, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

doctors, that is, I'm nervously typing on a phone

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah it's fine, he'll be OK I'm sure. I'm just not certain that Crohn's is anything more than "not cancer, but something else!" and that he's got some more serious condition that they're unable to yet diagnose

Sorry for cluttering up the gay thread with gastroenteritis, that shit is gay kryptonite

I thought today was gonna be abt organ music all day and some bird watching, not nervously pace-and-post

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

don't apologize <3

surm, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

sorry o, your dad sounds like a rare sort. hope things turn around.

hope everything goes ok with yr dad, goon tie

dreamed last night that i planned a trip to toronto! in which i was told it was only "a few subway stops" from buffalo

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Monday, 22 October 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

Plan that trip, Toronto rules

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

*S*A*R*S* thwarted me from going there on a HS band trip but it seems like a Cool Place

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Monday, 22 October 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

toronto is definitely a cool place. it gets a bad rap in certain parts of canada, but it's a good time.

hope things work out with yr dad, o.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

I spent much of my youth in love with Toronto, but Montreal obliterated much of that when I finally visited it for the first time a few years back. I've heard Toronto described, derisively one assumes, as "a Canadian city for Americans." This has nothing to do with MY preference for one over the other, but Montreal feels more unique to me in a way in which may or may not be uniquely Canadian (over familiarity with Toronto at this point prob has a lot to do with it too.

Best wishes to you and yr dad, o.p.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Monday, 22 October 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

oh, i mean. this is my city, i just mean that toronto gets a lot of flack in mtl sometimes and it's not as bad as ppl say it is.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

This is a perennial comment, but: nobody in Toronto cares what Montreallers think about us + we don't talk smack about Montreal bc your city is awesome + visit us and eat of our delicious ethnic food, warm yourself

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

Speaking of which AO I'm gonna be in Montreal in a few days we should have a "moment"

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

i always thought montreal was more touristy than toronto, but maybe that's just bc i have relatives in the toronto? i dunno, i mean i hear way more stories about young people crossing the border to visit montreal than i do toronto

surm, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

(that was in response to the city for americans bit)

surm, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

(but i realize that's different than a conversation about tourism, i'm just kind of blabbing)

surm, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

More happy thoughts yr way. Apologies are entirely unnecessary; it gets boring if all we can talk about is fucking and My So-Called Life

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 22 October 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

My dad is resting comfortably, it's cool, was just a shock to visit for the first time in a few years and have it immediately be waiting rooms and worrying

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks for the kind words, all
I'll scan and post some hilarious childhood photos later

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

Wasn't dissing Toronto above, for the record. Still love the city, its just that Montreal has since replaced it as my dream home.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

Oh no, me too. It's just a matter of time

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

Montreal felt more exotic to me bcz I said two words of French to a shop cashier before getting busted as une poseur.

(also cuz I saw Arcade Fire play in a Salvation Army temple I guess)

crazy uncle in the attic (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

in paris i definitely said "bonsoir" to a boulangere at like 9am, among many other bunglings of the french language

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

xp

salvation army temple?

lol. when was this morbz. i'm trying to think of weird places they've played here and besides the big outdoor shows all i can think about were the neon bible-era repurposed ukranian church.

which like a) great show(s). b) great venue - i saw joanna newsom at the Ukranian Nat'l Federation a few years back and more recently xiu xiu and BRAIDS and it's always so lovely.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

It was the week the debut album came out, Sept '04. (also the last week the Expos played which was obv my #1 reason for visiting)

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

i wasn't in montreal until the following september. iirc, they played the black sheep inn just outside of ottawa around then, and a bunch of us in high school spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to best get out there.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

I've been to Sault Ste. Marie and Cranbrook, BC. They were not exotic, though they seemed so at the time b/c I was a youngster and tout le francais all over the place was thrilling.

shall I risk being the newb who asks what a "fap" is, assuming, naturally, that it isn't what I think it means (Google "gay fap" and see what happens).

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

it's a traditional ilx virgin sacrifice rite

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

we're gonna sacrifice gay virgins?

seems like a waste.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

jer, fap is an acronym for "fancy a pint?' and "a fap" became the ILX only word for any kind of social event organised by ILXors even if pints or drinks were not involved.

jed_, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

haha. yeah. it confused me for AGES.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

but when i started here i ventured into the scary boards of in-jokes and tried to figure out what best beloved whatever was. i quickly returned to the relative safety of ILM and the gay threads.
