in other writerly news, I was rereading a paper that I presented at the Popular Culture Association of Canada back in May and just realized that I quoted J0rdan in it (acknowledged by name in the text, but I didn't know this Jordan was our J0rdan at the time)!

The Weeknd and the schizo nature of contemporary R&B in general. Quoted the bit about the Guetta-fication of R&B from yr Miguel review.

i had a pretty great fall weekend. worked my restaurant shift friday, got a $20 handshake which was cool. i did my thrift store thing saturday & found a new thrift store & a bunch of great pendleton shirts, then went down to my friend's off-season beach house rental for dinner. yesterday had homemade brunch & then went apple & quince picking with new gay friends in town. concluded sunday drinking mulled cider with bourbon. autumn is cool.
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 22 October 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know if I've had a quince yet. Are they apple-like?
― bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 22 October 2012 11:21 (thirteen years ago)
i haven't either! but i don't think they're very edible when raw, our friend is going to use them to make membrillo, which is like a quince jelly common to spanish cuisine & served with manchego iirc
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 22 October 2012 11:26 (thirteen years ago)
anyway i was up a tree picking & tossing quinces down to people and telling them to call me quincy, it was kinda fun

I just arrived at my dad's place in rural Quebec. I'm here to do some score revisions and I thought it'd be fun to work on them with my dad, who is a comp hobbyist and is also bedridden w Crohn's. Next to the coffee maker is a spreadsheet with every relative and family friend's milk and sugar preferences, and it is very detailed, incl. coffee and tea, milk and cream, stovetop or press, AM and PM.

My dad is pretty un-gay despite having two gay-leaning sons and a bisexual daughter. Last time I went to a wedding, he raised an eyebrow and said, "a... gay wedding?" with much disapproval. That said, I'm surrounded by brass rubbings, he's got nice cheese in the fridge and we're listening to Franck organ music. I turned on his electric keyboard and it was set to "harpsichord + vibraphone". I love my dad.

That coffee chart is fantastic!!
― bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:55 (thirteen years ago)
i've never met another person who knew the franck organ music
― tuplet nester (clouds), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:58 (thirteen years ago)
For real? You should meet more organists, once you run out of Bach it's straight on to Franck.

Unfortunately he's really not feeling well today and we might spend the day in the doctor's office :( poor dad

i don't have many musical friends irl, and don't tend to get along with classical musicians in general for some reason (at least the ones i've met).
― tuplet nester (clouds), Monday, 22 October 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)
Probably bc we're insufferable tbh

brass rubbings!
feel better, dad.
― crazy uncle in the attic (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 October 2012 14:37 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I can see it. In others and self. I think the problem is far deeper than that, though, the rigid enforcement of athletic competition upon "art practice", plus the psychological damage (or what have you) of spending five hours a day doing exercises, fucks people up
I get along much better now w classical people than I did ten years ago, actively reconnecting with friends from school and so forth
My dad got a fever, we're on our way to emergency, boooo, relaxing family time turns to purposeful family time
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah my dad is a Medievalist fruit, he's got rubbings in the wall and Caravaggio prints and writes w calligraphy pens and owns and plays a harpsichord, a pipe organ building hobbyist. Currently retired but still does entomological consulting. Was SysOp for a bumblebee-focused BBS in the 80s and 90s called BombusNet. Nobody's business I guess but he's a cool guy and I hope these doctor's know what they're doing
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)
oh boy sorry to read that good luck

doctors, that is, I'm nervously typing on a phone
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah it's fine, he'll be OK I'm sure. I'm just not certain that Crohn's is anything more than "not cancer, but something else!" and that he's got some more serious condition that they're unable to yet diagnose
Sorry for cluttering up the gay thread with gastroenteritis, that shit is gay kryptonite
I thought today was gonna be abt organ music all day and some bird watching, not nervously pace-and-post
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

toronto is definitely a cool place. it gets a bad rap in certain parts of canada, but it's a good time.
hope things work out with yr dad, o.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)
I spent much of my youth in love with Toronto, but Montreal obliterated much of that when I finally visited it for the first time a few years back. I've heard Toronto described, derisively one assumes, as "a Canadian city for Americans." This has nothing to do with MY preference for one over the other, but Montreal feels more unique to me in a way in which may or may not be uniquely Canadian (over familiarity with Toronto at this point prob has a lot to do with it too.
Best wishes to you and yr dad, o.p.
― this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Monday, 22 October 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)
oh, i mean. this is my city, i just mean that toronto gets a lot of flack in mtl sometimes and it's not as bad as ppl say it is.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 October 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)
This is a perennial comment, but: nobody in Toronto cares what Montreallers think about us + we don't talk smack about Montreal bc your city is awesome + visit us and eat of our delicious ethnic food, warm yourself
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)
Speaking of which AO I'm gonna be in Montreal in a few days we should have a "moment"
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
i always thought montreal was more touristy than toronto, but maybe that's just bc i have relatives in the toronto? i dunno, i mean i hear way more stories about young people crossing the border to visit montreal than i do toronto
― surm, Monday, 22 October 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
(that was in response to the city for americans bit)
(but i realize that's different than a conversation about tourism, i'm just kind of blabbing)
More happy thoughts yr way. Apologies are entirely unnecessary; it gets boring if all we can talk about is fucking and My So-Called Life
― bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 22 October 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)
My dad is resting comfortably, it's cool, was just a shock to visit for the first time in a few years and have it immediately be waiting rooms and worrying
