It is very difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish between being in love with what you are doing and being in love with yourself.

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Sunday, 21 October 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

bruno mars hosting gig due to whatever internet input they were soliciting (purely speculative on my part) and hopes for another timberlake probably right?

balls, Sunday, 21 October 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

also w/ athletes hosting i think there's been a big difference between major pro team athletes hosting (a la barkley, the mannings, or oj and fran tarkenton way back when) and olympic athletes (phelps, kerrigan), the pro athletes have had alot more experience w/ media, building their brand, major ad campaigns, etc. by the time peyton hosted he'd already been in nearly an hour's worth of awful awful snl type sketches for oreo or whoever. these guys also have big, well known personas or auras that snl can play off even if the athlete host isn't a natural (eg michael jordan).

balls, Sunday, 21 October 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

good point. Barkley and the Mannings were relatively great, Phelps was terrible.

dan selzer, Sunday, 21 October 2012 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

Man there have been some awful sketches this season: Pandora, My Kitty Cat, Foot Locker/Gangnam Style, Haters, Dance Studio...

I hate Tig Notaro so much I gave Louis C.K. a dollar (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 October 2012 05:10 (thirteen years ago)

I liked My Kitty Cat for no defensible reason.

Bout to go Jethro TULL on that ass (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 October 2012 05:17 (thirteen years ago)

kitty cat will probably be seen as a beloved classic 10 years from now

turds (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 22 October 2012 06:25 (thirteen years ago)

It's funny to imagine the writers watching alien and thinking, "who brought the cat?" The parodies of various aliens crew members were also good. Already a beloved classic imo.

overfaded aeropostale bootcuts I have owned (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 October 2012 06:32 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I liked it.

And I know everyone thought I was crazy by noting how little Vanessa there was last week. Well she barely did better this week.

dan selzer, Monday, 22 October 2012 07:53 (thirteen years ago)

SNL is a total Rorschach test. Quality-wise, I don't think there's anything universally agreed upon except maybe that the late '80s/early '90s era was the show's peak. The highly subjective and wildly differing opinions of what works and what doesn't and what's good and what isn't is probably due to some formula Lorne's worked out that keeps the show successful. "There are too many highbrow sketches this week. We need something dumb that some people will love and that other people will spend all week complaining about on the internet."

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

I think valuing Sandler/Schnieder/Spade/Farley over, say, the first five years would be pretty far from universally agreed!

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 22 October 2012 12:51 (thirteen years ago)

meyers, carvey too?

s.clover, Monday, 22 October 2012 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, for anyone who's curious (especially since, to my knowledge, there's never been any follow up publicity about his exit), Paul Brittain is back doing regular improv gigs at iO in Chicago.

I saw he and J3t Ev3l3th were doing a two-person thing, but I had the impression it was a one-off -- he's not, like, on a team, is he?

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Monday, 22 October 2012 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

and yeah, the cat sketch is like the only memorable bit this season.

s.clover, Monday, 22 October 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

xpost

Yeah, he's back in Challenger!

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 13:10 (thirteen years ago)

I think valuing Sandler/Schnieder/Spade/Farley over, say, the first five years would be pretty far from universally agreed!

Dude, yr chronology is effed. That's early to mid-'90s. I'm talking about Hartman/Hooks/Lovitz/Carvey et al.

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 13:12 (thirteen years ago)

And anyone who still trumpets about the first five years as Best Evah!!! probably watched the show at the time and not once since and also complains about how music went south ever since disco happened. IMVHO.

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)

This show sucks.

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 22 October 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

I've watched the last few episodes after staying away for about 5 years--and it seems like the show has improved quite a bit.

Binders Full of Mittens (President Keyes), Monday, 22 October 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

I think you're all being too hard on Bruno.

^^ This

curmudgeon, Monday, 22 October 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

11/10 - Anne Hathaway / Rihanna
11/17 - Jeremy Renner / Maroon 5

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

Just watching the Bruno episode, hes great so far wtf

Mr. Zone A (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 1 November 2012 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

hes fine but u cant think those are good sketches

johnny crunch, Thursday, 1 November 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

I'll agree to that

Mr. Zone A (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 1 November 2012 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

lol apparently there was a "Help Get Jeremy Renner to Host SNL" Facebook campaign? wtf

some dude, Thursday, 1 November 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i didn't mind the bruno episode much at all. lightweight material but dude was game

da croupier, Thursday, 1 November 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

yeah went better w/ him than it probably would've with any other recently minted pop stars i can think of

some dude, Thursday, 1 November 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

lol apparently there was a "Help Get Jeremy Renner to Host SNL" Facebook campaign? wtf

Avengers superfans are some of the interwebs craziest people.

Sug ban (Nicole), Thursday, 1 November 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

jeremy renner is a critically acclaimed actor that hollywood apparently wants in every single action franchise! why shouldn't he host?

da croupier, Thursday, 1 November 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

him actually hosting didn't raise an eyebrow from me, the idea of hundreds of people publicly rooting for that to happen did

some dude, Thursday, 1 November 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno i once clicked like on trying to get an indie rock dude on law & order, i assume there's a facebook group for everything

da croupier, Thursday, 1 November 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah you're prob right, i have blissfully low awareness of that world

some dude, Thursday, 1 November 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

lol just realized what your post was referring to

some dude, Thursday, 1 November 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

god this Louis Lincoln sketch was amazing

i've grown accustomed to her face tat (m bison), Sunday, 4 November 2012 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

^^ totally killed me

Infamous dickbiscuits (silby), Sunday, 4 November 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

tuning in just for Louis over here btw, usually SNL leaves me cold

Infamous dickbiscuits (silby), Sunday, 4 November 2012 03:59 (thirteen years ago)

the youngest wahlberg brother teamed up with rob lowe's band from st elmo's fire and now they're attacking my ears

turds (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 4 November 2012 04:10 (thirteen years ago)

I've never heard Fun before but they sound like Glass Tiger.

This Is Not An ILX Username (LaMonte), Sunday, 4 November 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)

lil wahlberg looked coked up as fuck

i've grown accustomed to her face tat (m bison), Sunday, 4 November 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)

girl you wish you hadn't started a conversation with is still good, at least.

also yeah lincoln was good.

s.clover, Sunday, 4 November 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

"lincoln" was kinda legendary

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 4 November 2012 04:27 (thirteen years ago)

man there's like what six segments on this show? kind of weak sauce

Infamous dickbiscuits (silby), Sunday, 4 November 2012 05:01 (thirteen years ago)

the closing sketch was finally solid and fitting to the host w/o just being a riff on his show. i'm really fond of the bar closing genre of sketches actually. tina fey's tiny hooker sketch is still hilarious to me.

s.clover, Sunday, 4 November 2012 05:05 (thirteen years ago)

The Viking horn going wasn't funny at all.

This Is Not An ILX Username (LaMonte), Sunday, 4 November 2012 05:07 (thirteen years ago)

Kind of liked the Viking horn! Reminded me of early Woody Allen, in a way.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Sunday, 4 November 2012 05:13 (thirteen years ago)

Viking horn wasn't funny but wasn't actively bad. Hotel kind of a non-sketch. Lincoln and that final bar sketch were the only real keepers, though Fox and Friends is always worth something.

Gukbe, Sunday, 4 November 2012 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

I liked the Viking horn thing but that genre of sketch, fantasy/sci-fi/occult/whatever characters being just regular dudes is getting real long in the tooth.

Fun apparently raided grandpa's closet and also sucked.

spittin all over my sweater of fine material (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 4 November 2012 09:14 (thirteen years ago)

I don't watch much SNL through the year, but I try to watch through Weekend Update during an election year. The Lincoln sketch was great--surreal enough that I'd have a hard time to describing it to someone. First time I've seen the woman-you-avoid-at-a-party, and that ought to go into a 2012 time capsule. (Was going to allude to someone I know who she reminded me of, but I don't think I will.) I really like Sudeikis's Romney. It's not even close to an impression, but his Andy Hardy cheerfulness kills me. Loved when he took the can of soup back.

clemenza, Sunday, 4 November 2012 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Waiting for the day when woman you met at a party meets drunk uncle.

dan selzer, Sunday, 4 November 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

I was thinking about that last night. Very similar characters.
