the cheap sentimentality and optimistic humanism -- paired up with the nastiness -- is what makes me cringe the most

Everyone gathering round to gawk at and then criticize a teenage girl who wore yoga pants at a mall, or being salacious towards the few women that admit to posting there, but then the thread underneath that one is something like "Hey guys, faith in humanity: restored" and it's a jpeg of a wheelchair-bound kid having his wheelchair made to look like a Mario Kart.

And they think their website is the future of human communication and "sharing." Billions of people acting hostile and brutal towards one another but then taking a break to be moved by inspiring jpegs and amusing gifs is what civilization has been building towards.

ha, yes. it's the implied innocence or purity of those "feel good" posts that underhandedly justify the bullying, meanness, and narcissism. like how ant-abortion activists couch their woman/sex hating in a caring for babies.

in that sense the "feel good" stuff is a very critical part of that toxic ecosystem.

I went to one of those links and the reddit thread was a still from a fps videogame of some woman bent over against a wall and all the comments were self-congratulatory atheist zings.

I saw Self-Congratulatory Atheist Zings open for First Vagina Finish Line last year; not crazy about the Sufjan-y vibe they're going for.

what i mean is there's no socially redeeming way to post/generate prurient linkbaity stuff.

does any social media darling not do this? it seems like every social media platform tom sawyers their early following into whitewashing their fence for perpetual traffic. the only thing that separates reddit from a kickstarter or pinterest is that they cashed out to a corporate acquirer a little too early.
