i think that 51 fp's over different posts could still lead to a ban, iirc?

the oft-posited third fisherman (darraghmac), Saturday, 20 October 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

i thought it was arbitrary and on a post by post basis

"I could likely count the collective number of SBs & FPs I've used on the fingers of one hand. One of those fingers was used today."

which finger did you use?

who are you all fp'ing i want in, too

factscrotum (flopson), Saturday, 20 October 2012 00:51 (thirteen years ago)

It's funny w/ all the beefing recently, the only ban is for a single post the brunt of which clearly rolled off its target's back exactly as the person posting it knew it would. If an 'effective' ban is one that improves the quality of the board by telling a chronically toxic poster to stop being that way or not come back, this wasn't one of them.

boxall, Saturday, 20 October 2012 00:51 (thirteen years ago)

just because the target took it well doesn't make it acceptable

i just looked at the admin log and saw someone was banned. I guess that's what you were all talking about.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 20 October 2012 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

you're really proud of that one huh? xp

yeah when I post the thread rarely changes direction and becomes about me, I'm still working on that

boxall, Saturday, 20 October 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

relieved that he was banned. i was offended at it as a person having to read it, not because i thought morbs couldn't handle it or w/e. dude is tough and can defend himself, obv.

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Saturday, 20 October 2012 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

Again though, with the temp bans coming over the weekend. Dudes can just be all "fine, I'll spend two days at the pumpkin festival, one day at work actually getting shit done, then it's back to ilx with me!"

REJECT BAN CULTURE

I'm a mod on another board. The forum's subject is backpacking, pure and simple. The owner of the board makes it plain and obvious that certain kinds of flaming and sniping are not going to be tolerated, and that spam is totally verboten. The rules are posted; they are clear and so are the consequences. I have no problem banning anyone who crosses the line in that forum.

Just because a website invites participation doesn't mean the person or people who maintain it and pay for it must tolerate any and all kinds of participation. All that "freedom of speech" means, legally, is that "Congress shall make no law limiting freedom of speech". Individuals who operate websites are not Congress and are not bound by the First Amendment to provide you with a platform to say whatever you want to say.

It amazes me how often people do not understand this distinction. BAN CULTURE is just as legitimate as any other standard of conduct.

Aimless, Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

no one is arguing on a free speech basis

they just think that a looser standard of bannination is more conducive to a thriving community®

mookieproof, Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:05 (thirteen years ago)

sure

racewar driver (k3vin k.), Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

"Thriving" is a subjective characterization. If the activity on a board is unacceptable to a substantial number of its participants, then it will eventually drive them away. When the number of members who appreciate a certain kind of license, flagrant pot-stirring and hubbub is small compared to the number of members who abhore it, then from the pov of the appreciators they might say this freewheeling content was a mark of excellence and vitality, while the larger number would say it is unacceptable crap that detracts from the forum.

Neither group is objectivly correct, but it makes sense that the preponderance of votes would win the argument, in the absence of any better measure of what makes the community "thrive".

i'm guessing backpacking spam would be more about: hey anyone want a good deal on uh....some backpacks? or something like that.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:31 (thirteen years ago)

Try gucci shoes, versace bags and Toronto escort services with asian women.

oh okay the usual. thought it might be specific to the thing.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

A tempban is a pretty mild slap on the wrist that really isn't used very often 'round these parts and thankfully doesn't need to be used all that often. There are plenty of places online where people can be awful to one another without fear of reprisal. Frankly, I'm glad that this is a place where wishing death on an ill poster (even in jest) isn't just blithely ignored (even if the ill poster in question isn't particularly bothered himself).

ah there it is.

love this:

The script was altered so much that the original writer asked to have his name taken off it; the story is credited instead to "Robin Bland".◦ Specifically Terrance Dicks asked that it be credited to "some bland pseudonym". Robert Holmes complied spectacularly.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

i have yet to write my essay on BAN CULTURE as it relates to ILX but Aimless i specifically use the word "culture" to suggest something far more more intricate than the act of banning posters.

thanks for the concern trolling tho
