what can i say, i didn't own a tv when it came out. it's so bad it's good, says i, and i'll stand by that statement. even if everyone involved in making it says it stinks!

seriously. like when that lady's throwing 8 year old p.t.'s teddy bear and red bigwheel out the window and shit? i squirted coke out my nostrils. what, am i going against the grain here? i legitimately thought it was hilarious. one of those midnight-showing-cult-classic type movies. it has missy elliot in it, dueting with a cat singing pure nonsense ffs!

pootie tang is pretty well regarded on ilx, you're not swimming against the current in the way you think you are

also this show louie this thread is about. like it is weird, and random, but random can be cool! my friends say i'm way random. like, just go with it, i say!

maybe it was on that wtf podcast where marc was talking about how louie's standup used to be just sort of dada randomness, and he's sorta moved beyond that now but there's still a thread of it in his show (the 3 eyes in the doll head, the girl jumping onto the helicopter and flying off etc) but pootie tang is like the distilled essence of his utter randomness.

anyway it is only just and right if the citizens of ilx like the movie too. i'm just throwing my 2 cents in! it's not the show, but, i only watched it cause of the show, so. pootie tang! it's good! watch it if you haven't yet!

I don't have a problem with the (months-old, Internet-only) LARB publishing thinkpieces about TV shows, since the NYRB/LRB often cover culture in a broader way, too. But I do have to lol at the fact that they're doing episode-by-episode e-mail back-and-forths about The New Girl and Mindy.

I enjoyed her other comedy album and was happy to pay the $5 and hope she does great but I didn't find this new thing at all funny or entertaining really.

Yeah I'd say I did? I mean yeah I feel like a jerk but no, it didn't do anything for me.

I got in a car w/ NPR playing and they started talking about her and I thought I was about to have to hear the cancer set, or commentary about it, once again. But instead it was her doing her Taylor Dayne bit, which I like.

ha i had no idea it was her who did that taylor dayne bit, i don't know why but knowing that somehow sells me on finally listening to this more than all the hosannas.

i guess cancer standup is an acquired taste.

i liked the tig, but it's not like life-changing or anything. well worth five bucks

TBH, I don't remember liking too much of Pootie Tang the movie, but I used to love the Pootie Tang segments on the Chris Rock show.

pootie tang the movie is awesome and somehow even more committed to the absurdity of the character than the chris rock show segments. i can totally understand why ck is disappointed w/ how it turned out and part of me wonders exactly what he had envisioned for it (esp knowing that so much of what i love about it - j.b. smoove's narration, that almost the entire movie is in reality a clip during a talk show segment - was either a last minute addition or compromise), but i deeply deeply love it just the same.

I laughed and teared up. Comedy's best when it's lolling about serious things. Worth $5.

honestly, haven't gotten past the first scene of 'pootie tang.' maybe i'm not familiar enough with the chris rock show character. i don't know what pootie was supposed to be (judging from the youtube above).

Seth Meyers was on Fallon last night and said that SNL was still happening. He also seemed to avoid saying anything about Louis when asked, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I know I'm often the lone voice of skepticism around here about the way his FX show was developed, but he's still a helluva guy. This is very heartwarming and exactly the right tone

it's honestly kind of one of my favorite things about the guy, that he knew nobody would ever pronounce Szekely correctly so he figured out a way to have a stage name that would force people to correctly pronounce his actual name

first-names, and last-names, people. posturising initials are for petty children.

why did he have a mic in his snl monologue

Apart from the two things that were his obvious strengths (monologuing, recorded Louie-themed sketch) I thought Louis was pretty bad.

xpost probably to be more comfortable. I thought it was real funny that he was doing that thing he always does where he holds the mic too close on another TV show. It's like a band getting to play through their own amps

Noticed when I saw him last that along with a mic he also has a little digital recorder and tapes every show. That's dedication, to go through a set I guess to fine tune the laughs.

Man, it was so fascinating to watch him modulate his performance tonight based on the person/comedian he has become. Very few jokes about his kids, some sideways references to his success, and lots of jokes about mortality/morality. Great bits involving splitting his morality into "of course ..." vs. "But maybe ...," legalizing murder, the end of "The Grapes of Wrath," how thankful we should be that we no longer exist in the midst of a food chain, etc. Not sure if he was funnier than the last time I saw him, but the ability of anyone to hold a crowd's attention for 90 minutes with most people chuckling to laughing the whole time is something.
