"Legal analysts are split on whether Reddit is breaking any laws by allowing its users to post such heinous images."
^ I love this. "Two people we pay to have passing opinions that differ came up with some stuff we could use after a few minutes of research and a corona."

still not sure why this dude doesn't just start his own reddit-clone site called brutschproject or whatever, be the stileproject of the new century, monetize it, and turn his creepo habit into a day job
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 19 October 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)
don't think any of this is really that monetizable, even at the scale of reddit. maybe he could so $4.99 subscriptions for sickos but i'd imagine he'll be forgotten in a few months.
reddit is immensely valuable as an asset for conde nast, in theory it could be sold for ridiculous money to an acquirer under the ruse of it being a social media startup or the male counterpart to pinterest for a future owner like yahoo. but as a revenue generating entity their audience is virulently anti-ad, and those $20 top of screen units have pretty much flopped. conde invests little in it, which is why admins outsourced board policing and special rights to people like Brutsch in the first place.
― sanskrit, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)
He could just get a job at an actual pr0n site.

I have never been more pleased that I haven't yet bothered to learn perl
― The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)
pssh, nobody learns perl now unless they're maintaining someone else's script from the 90s

go on, all you young whippersnappers with your agile this and your responsive that, enjoy Python making all the mistakes Perl made (though slightly more readably, I grant you)

kind of amazing how even with no/minimal ads it manages to be visually annoying. but maybe that's me reacting more to the reddit "brand" than its actual look
― dell (del), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)
no you're right, its look is terrible

perl pwns and i learned it a year or two ago after seeing this module: https://metacpan.org/module/Acme::EyeDrops

you know who else is a perl coder? Gruber.

gruber.

gruber wrote markdown, arguably one of the most influential perl libraries in the past ten years. fwiw.

Reddit should have to merge websites with Gawker and Something Awful. And there should be one Vince McMahon-style administrator who's in charge and all the ad-click revenue goes to underprivileged high school girls who want to go to college someday.
upvote this if you agree.

the cheap sentimentality and optimistic humanism -- paired up with the nastiness -- is what makes me cringe the most
Everyone gathering round to gawk at and then criticize a teenage girl who wore yoga pants at a mall, or being salacious towards the few women that admit to posting there, but then the thread underneath that one is something like "Hey guys, faith in humanity: restored" and it's a jpeg of a wheelchair-bound kid having his wheelchair made to look like a Mario Kart.
And they think their website is the future of human communication and "sharing." Billions of people acting hostile and brutal towards one another but then taking a break to be moved by inspiring jpegs and amusing gifs is what civilization has been building towards.
― Cunga, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)
Don't get too bogged down by the sentimentality.

i don't think it's civilization but conde nast that's been building towards that.

ha, yes. it's the implied innocence or purity of those "feel good" posts that underhandedly justify the bullying, meanness, and narcissism. like how ant-abortion activists couch their woman/sex hating in a caring for babies.
― ryan, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
in that sense the "feel good" stuff is a very critical part of that toxic ecosystem.
ha, either pat yourself on the back for the dead-on imitation or never turn your computer on again.
(hint: go for the former.)

you guys don't think the problem is more that a large media corporation is share-cropping its content and traffic generation to users?

what are you talking about, man, reddit is independent and the future and grassroots
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)
I went to one of those links and the reddit thread was a still from a fps videogame of some woman bent over against a wall and all the comments were self-congratulatory atheist zings.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)
I saw Self-Congratulatory Atheist Zings open for First Vagina Finish Line last year; not crazy about the Sufjan-y vibe they're going for.
