it reminds me of when gawker published that long piece about romney's finances in offshore cayman accounts and ppl responded by pointing out that gawker is also invested in similar accounts.

I kind of can't get over the fact that there was an entire buttsharpie subreddit

this is fascinating. what on earth does it mean? that the entire internet will be Reddit? do all these guys (tech/web guys, i guess) think like this?

i mean the 2 big differences btw reddit creepshots and gawker publishing celeb sex tapes that seem to get lost on reddit are 1) the distinction between public figures & private citizens (or generally between "news" and "not news") and 2) gawker writers publish this stuff under their irl names

distinction 1 is "real" but arguable i guess, theres a legal distinction and it seems to have been more or less settled in the court of public opinion anyway

distinction 2 strikes me as more important and yet even more ignored

w/r/t to libel and slander lawsuits, if the plaintiff is a 'public figure' they have to prove actual malice

If 'this is legal' is Reddit's main defense in standing up against DOXers, then surely it can be a defense for Gawker who doesn't seem to appear to be doing anything illegal either.
