reading comments (this one possibly from screenwriter John Milius): Grow a spine. Bullies and creeps like the man that tortured this little girl get away with stuff like this because of people like you who don't have enough backbone to stand up and speak out against things. You're more concerned with the rights of the accused than the rights of the victim. You're a particular brand of a "bleeding heart" that I seriously can't stand having once been a victim myself.

was facebook the first website that really stripped away the Internet Handle layer-of-anonymity that had been standard since AOL or whatever, and asked you to just use your real name? when i signed up for it, the justification for that being okay was it was college-only and sectioned off by school so only your classmates could look you up.

anyway it seems like that was the beginning of the end for the screen name era of the internet, now people just stick their real names in their twitter handles or whatever like it's no big deal, when 10 years ago we were all being taught that the #1 rule of using the internet was not to reveal personal info

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

getting people to use their real name was prob factor #1 in its success, imo

I think there's a difference here between anonymity and a separation of spheres. I wouldn't consider myself anonymous on here to any degree, really, but this sphere is mostly separate from the rest of my life. Similarly, no old school-mates can track me down on facebook, because I use a name they don't know. And nobody who I worked with could find me easily either, unless I chose to open myself up - it's not anonymity, but it is a level of separation. And because it's not anonymity, the levels of privacy and control I've set up aren't very high - almost anyone could track me down, really. It's just a question of why they'd want to: because they're dicks or I'm enough of one to warrant it, I guess.

emil.y, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

what really freaks me out is google's 'search by image' feature, tbh

well said, emil.y

ya i think for the most part of you never make that weird behavioral leap where you start acting like a sociopath because you assume you have anonymity prob no one is ever gonna bother to track and doxx the f out of you, obvs there are huge exceptions to this where people can be victimized for whatever reasons

So guess who's going on CNN tonight.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Comments from other Redditors have ranged from supportive to downright hostile.

"My advice to you would be to take a long hard look at yourself and ask yourself who you really are, violentacrez or Mr. Brutsch," one wrote to Brutsch. "My personal view is just about anyone can redeem themselves if they truly put the effort into it. I hope you think about that option."

"Believe it or not," Brutsch replied, "It is at the top of my list."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

But of course.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

CNN should have him phone into the town hall debate, have him ask about his concerns from privacy in our digital age, compare himself to those johns being named over in Maine...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

I was going to start a thread about the Maine johns

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

I really rather think you should.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

if this is turning into a more general thread on internet privacy with a sidebar on politics then this seems relevant

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/14/us/politics/campaigns-mine-personal-lives-to-get-out-vote.html

some creepy shit in there

The campaigns’ consultants have run experiments to determine if embarrassing someone for not voting by sending letters to their neighbors or posting their voting histories online is effective.

“I’ve had half-a-dozen conversations with third parties who are wondering if this is the year to start shaming,” said one consultant who works closely with Democratic organizations. “Obama can’t do it. But the ‘super PACs’ are anonymous. They don’t have to put anything on the flier to let the voter know who to blame.”

dmr, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

also they're asking campaign volunteers to open up their Facebook so the campaign can data-mine for friends from battleground states who would then get a call from someone they're at least tenuously connected to

dmr, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

i dig it. nonvoters are lamers.

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

already have a bunch of friends you disrespect? now we can tell you which of them to call to make it clear

Did anybody see VA's interview on CNN?

WmC, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

Did that happen? I was reading conflicting bits about how he might actually appear on Thursday instead.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

Makes sense that he'd be bumped with debate coverage taking up so much time today.

WmC, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

This is all part of his grand scheme to stay anonymous.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder if lucasfilm lawyers know about this http://www.reddit.com/r/truejailbait or maybe its lke google doodle where it changes every other day.

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 06:11 (thirteen years ago)

he posted in reddit that one of his "talking points" was that gawker posts upskirts. Lol

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 06:12 (thirteen years ago)

hahaha they keep passing around this link

http://gawker.com/upskirt

there are five stories at that page, two are about reddit, two are about other creeps, one is about Lindsay lohan.

im don't buy the charge of hypocrisy but there are a LOT creepier things on gawker. seems to me that it speaks to redditors laziness that they don't notice how weak their favorite evidence actually is

max, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

actually sorry THIS is the upskirts link that was goin around reddit
