its def come up, but my lord when these people who grew up online start stepping into the public view
have politicians gotten their shit together re: online anonymity? it feels like it's been a good long while since someone's been scandalized out of office for something.― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, October 16, 2012 1:48 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalinkshould be pretty interesting/lol when todays facebook teens start running for office ----bob marley (lag∞n)

― iatee, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
yeah it was a woman running for state senate in Maine, but she publically linked her WoW char to her real name/campaign so that's not the same really
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
i'm actually really looking forward to that

tbf I don't really think there ever was anonymity, I think few people cared to actually track stuff down
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)
you can be anonymous if you really put yr mind to it but thats more for special ops shit like organizing revolution or releasing leaked documents, for message boards you hang out on all the time and access from yr home/work computer just assume that someone can find you if they want to

ohhhh snap!! maybe T✧✧@K✧✧.E✧✧ really was anonymous, last of a dying breed, RIP T✧✧@K✧✧.E✧✧

anonymity takes a lot of work, definitely shouldn't be considered the default state

reading comments (this one possibly from screenwriter John Milius): Grow a spine. Bullies and creeps like the man that tortured this little girl get away with stuff like this because of people like you who don't have enough backbone to stand up and speak out against things. You're more concerned with the rights of the accused than the rights of the victim. You're a particular brand of a "bleeding heart" that I seriously can't stand having once been a victim myself.

was facebook the first website that really stripped away the Internet Handle layer-of-anonymity that had been standard since AOL or whatever, and asked you to just use your real name? when i signed up for it, the justification for that being okay was it was college-only and sectioned off by school so only your classmates could look you up.
anyway it seems like that was the beginning of the end for the screen name era of the internet, now people just stick their real names in their twitter handles or whatever like it's no big deal, when 10 years ago we were all being taught that the #1 rule of using the internet was not to reveal personal info
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)
getting people to use their real name was prob factor #1 in its success, imo

I think there's a difference here between anonymity and a separation of spheres. I wouldn't consider myself anonymous on here to any degree, really, but this sphere is mostly separate from the rest of my life. Similarly, no old school-mates can track me down on facebook, because I use a name they don't know. And nobody who I worked with could find me easily either, unless I chose to open myself up - it's not anonymity, but it is a level of separation. And because it's not anonymity, the levels of privacy and control I've set up aren't very high - almost anyone could track me down, really. It's just a question of why they'd want to: because they're dicks or I'm enough of one to warrant it, I guess.

ya i think for the most part of you never make that weird behavioral leap where you start acting like a sociopath because you assume you have anonymity prob no one is ever gonna bother to track and doxx the f out of you, obvs there are huge exceptions to this where people can be victimized for whatever reasons
