imo a big problem with all this is the mainstreaming and normalization of doxxing people which is a bannable offense on most forums on the internet (4chan included). even if a site like predditors does their due diligence and confirms that the people are in fact 'shitlords', nothing is really stopping trolls with a vendetta against someone to drop dox under falsified circumstances. with this behavior becoming more mainstream and acceptable, the risk is no longer confined to 4chan/hacking/other seedy communities on the net where you probably should've known better than to kick the hornet's nest.

that being said, i think VA was asking for it and received his comeuppance and predditors is probably an effective deterrent against this particular shitty behavior online for the time being. i just worry what the long term consequences are going to be for internet culture

feel like for better or worse the illusion of anonymity is gonna get shattered

--bob marley (lag∞n), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

OTM: a good 95% of the ppl on the internet who think they're anonymous are not in any way, shape or form, and it's probably for the best that that illusion get shattered sooner rather than later

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

getting a swat team to knock down the door of someone you don't like online has been a pastime for the hacking community for a long time. from what i read, the ease at which you can do this is kinda mindblowing

Anime Mann (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

have politicians gotten their shit together re: online anonymity? it feels like it's been a good long while since someone's been scandalized out of office for something.

the whole thing reminds me of the whole perverted justice thing where they'd encourage people to post people's phone numbers online and on the streets and phone their parents and bosses directly in an attempt to shame them, because who's gonna feel bad for a would-be child molester right? and of course they didn't always wind up getting the right guy. sometimes it's more about the boner you get knowing you ruined some asshole's life than it is trying to put people to justice (by the way I'm really not defending this guy, he does deserve what he gets)

tbf I don't really think there ever was anonymity, I think few people cared to actually track stuff down

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)

you can be anonymous if you really put yr mind to it but thats more for special ops shit like organizing revolution or releasing leaked documents, for message boards you hang out on all the time and access from yr home/work computer just assume that someone can find you if they want to

reading comments (this one possibly from screenwriter John Milius): Grow a spine. Bullies and creeps like the man that tortured this little girl get away with stuff like this because of people like you who don't have enough backbone to stand up and speak out against things. You're more concerned with the rights of the accused than the rights of the victim. You're a particular brand of a "bleeding heart" that I seriously can't stand having once been a victim myself.

was facebook the first website that really stripped away the Internet Handle layer-of-anonymity that had been standard since AOL or whatever, and asked you to just use your real name? when i signed up for it, the justification for that being okay was it was college-only and sectioned off by school so only your classmates could look you up.

anyway it seems like that was the beginning of the end for the screen name era of the internet, now people just stick their real names in their twitter handles or whatever like it's no big deal, when 10 years ago we were all being taught that the #1 rule of using the internet was not to reveal personal info

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

getting people to use their real name was prob factor #1 in its success, imo
