like if someone shows you an illegal image against your will, you can't go to jail unless you live in some kind of 1984 bullshit society right?

1984 bullshit society pretty much the only scenario where I can imagine being shown horrible/illegal images against my will.

There is this super bullshit fantasy that internet blowhards like to pretend to believe, which is that the troll is man in a state of nature.

hah friend just posted on facebook feed that someone took a picture of them in public and they asked them to delete it and the guy was all no im allowed to this is in the public domain

--bob marley (lag∞n), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, those rules are weird/interesting when taken out of perv-land. i feel like you should at least have rights to photoshop yourself.

bnw, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

the whole legal/illegal aspect of this situation is a huge strawman and funneling device away from the real issue

nobody, literally nobody is claiming that posting these images is illegal, all that is being said is that it is a really, really, shitty thing to do & you should be prepared to face the consequences of doing it (which by the way, afaict, have also all been legal)

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think the death threats are legal

the taunting totally is tho

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

also this is legal -------> LOL

meanwhile in Canada.. a teen named Amanda Todd killed herself after being stalked and harassed online and Anonymous has released her alleged tormentors info too! Banner week for web anonymity. Supposedly he'd convinced her to show her chest on camera when she was in fifth grade, and slut shamed her for years after. Nice dude. Wish the info - if accurate - had leaked before the poor girl took her life.

If their info is right I am 100% behind outing him.. but then, it might not be, right? Sad all around.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

god damn @ that

there is no dana, only (goole), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)

what is the etymology of "doxxing"

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

to publish somebody's documents, their 'dox'

there is no dana, only (goole), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

FFM I was just coming here to post about that Amanda Todd thing. The number of stories of kids killing themselves the last several years after internet bullying just makes me want to press the button, I swear.

Tom Hardy & the Batbreakers (Phil D.), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

I see

why do I spend so much time on the Internet when it seems like every facet of it is totally enraging

I mean, their "dox"? really??????? FUCK YOU

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Cannibal Dox

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

the part that enrages you about this is the word "dox"?

Forbes has something more about Brutsch's now-former employers:

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

I think the moral is that when you think you have some level of anonymity, or disconnect between your personal/online/professional life, there are a number of reasons someone might want to break those barriers. Sometimes it's because you're doing something illegal and it's law enforcement, sometimes it's because you're a creep. That doesn't mean stripping that level of anonymity is "wrong," it just means it was ephemeral to begin with.

The idea that anyone is "wrong" to get offended or pissed off at this dude, or that there's some universal freedom of speech where it's somehow worse etiquette to call someone out on bullshit than it is to perpetuate such bullshit, is idiotic. I'm sure most people do *something* that offends *someone* but we live our lives relatively drama-free because we have the sense to only break laws or taboos when it's really worth it.

This dude thought it was worth it to continue making asinine subreddits.

the part that enrages you about this is the word "dox"?

that is not the only part that enrages me but that's super stupid, I mean come on

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

@ Phil I feel the same way. God knows I made some naive mistakes as a teen on the internet and frankly, the whole thing terrifies me and makes me want to cloak my little sister and future children in protective, internetless bubbles. Not like the real world isn't as stupidly dangerous. Just can't understand the senseless acts at all.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

once again, what about someone outing an ILX post out to their employer or something

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

This is why I think under 16s shouldn't use Facebook accounts or mobile phones.

ella fingerblast hurls forever (suzy), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

I like "doxxing" better when I imagine it to somehow involve Doc Martins.

pplains, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

All this talk of anonymity is great, but this kind of trolling is not anonymity. Dude was pretty into publicizing himself as some kind of celebrity, becoming a star amongst his online community, doing Ask Me Anythings, etc. There's a big difference between anonymously putting something up on the web and constructing a persona in order to feed your off-line ego.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

It boggles my mind that this guy's whole line of self-defense is 'trying to rile people up' and now that people are riled up it's suddenly not cool anymore.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

hey pplains, no disrespect, but why do people do this? like when the topic of discussion focuses somewhat around one word and then someone google image searches it and then posts something that is not really related at all w/o any content whatsoever, why is this done? what does this add to the thread. like if I post the "google docs" image here do I get big ups on an excelsior thread somewhere?

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

once again, what about someone outing an ILX post out to their employer or something

Well, if you are high profile enough that it offends someone who can read the board and they want to share it, and it's something that offends people outside of this realm, and it's relevant or offensive enough your employer actually cares...

I mean, my boss would be confused by getting a message about a random thing I said on the web, but that's about it?

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

also, pplains' image posts are funny

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

like if you can't connect that
a. it says dox on it, and he thought of it
b. this violenta crez shit is so disgusting it makes me think the thread needs antibiotics

then idk, maybe your humor just isn't in line

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

A) is fine, B) is a real stretch but okay. I've never ever seen anyone post "this thread needs antibiotics" but then again I am no ilxpert

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

see pplains just did that

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

Doxxy is a dumb little word and the fact that it's used in such a hushed sort of reverent way by the redditors – who already take their online experiences way too seriously – is pretty funny in a silly sort of way. Only reason I posted that image was to aid in taking some more air out of that phrase.

For a guy who has a fucking convoy of frog .jpgs following him whenever he posts something, surely you'd understand.

And "Google Docs" wouldn't have worked since there's no X.

pplains, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

But good question, frogs. I always look forward to hearing more from your inquisitive mind.

don't tell anyone but I think this thread needs some docs (doxx) on account of it being sick (about a guy with a sick mind)

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

This is why I think under 16s shouldn't use Facebook accounts or mobile phones.

tbf most over-16s shouldn't, either. People are generally pretty terrible. #takethatannefrank

I mean, who's next??
That is why other reddits are banning Gawker; not in support of me, but from disgust with Gawker, knowing they might be next.

roxymuzak 1 point 48 minutes ago
They could just stop posting stupid awful content.

mbrutsch 1 point 36 minutes ago
That would be a good idea.
