Wasnt mlk's letter from a birmingham jail about this xxp

fanute da croupier (D-40), Monday, 15 October 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

since I posted it earlier... that goth/fundie picture was the moment where I just lost it with her, especially when she gave a total non-apology after she was called out for it. In fact, the gist of her apology was pretty much, "sorry bad timing" (the tweet was posted around the same time as the Oak Creek shooting). Which... AGAIN, well done for not only equating all Muslim women who wear veils as "fundamentalists" but also confusing Sikhs with Muslims. UGH.

I was fine with Girls being all white characters, because I don't think minorities should be included just for the sake of it, and it seems kind of accurate anyway that they all just happened to be a bunch of white girls. But LD's attitude towards minorities outside of her work is just massively troubling.

maybe she'll get an unflattering cameo out of it like QT in Girl 6

ta-nehisi coates wrote something a while back about how he loves watching movies from the 30s and 40s but occasionally he starts wondering how many of the ppl he's watching were complete racists.

she should rethink her use of social media--this and her "fundamentalist" dress up suggest one of these times her "cute" oversharing is going to hit a collective nerve and have legs

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

i dont know if the homolka thing has a particular terrible resonance in canada but i feel like shes reached this status online as a lightning rod so literally anything she does even vaguely controversial will be blogged abt. like i kinda doubt if she were anyone else anybody would have noticed or cared

Jeez, I'll take her over Sarah Silverman any day.

people in showbiz on social media make Stanley Kubrick look like more of a god every day.

i feel like there has been some seismic generational shift between Silverman (Gen X/Y?) and Lena Dunham (ur-millenial). I'm no fan of Silverman, but she always seemed very knowing about what she was doing vis a vis "the boundaries of comedy" as Dunham said in her non-apology tweet to the fundamentalist thing. I don't get the sense that LD's social media faux pas are coming from the same place.

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 25 October 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

a universe where stanley kubrick was god would be fuckin' terrifying.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 25 October 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

i can understand maybe where she's coming from. when i was a kid i dressed up as OJ Simpson for halloween, complete with machete duct-taped to a football, which was sadly a hit in my backwater town. i still fight the urge to wear something patently offensive each year. my take is, growing up in the 90s you're educated to be politically correct, and it's fun to thumb your nose at anything you're told you have to do when you're a kid. see also: tosh.0.

It's the 1995 irony vs. 2012 absurdity thing.

thought it was pretty awesome tbh, not least for the hilarious spate of right-wing tweets it inspired.

i really can't imagine any wavering voter being pushed into the romney camp by this.

yeah that ad absolutely MELTED DOWN the right and since i doubt it'll be the hinge of the election i was v grateful for the entertainment

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 27 October 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

I saw Michael Zilkha introduce a screening of Blier's Going Places tonight, and he brought up the similarity between some of the sex scenes in the movie and those on "Girls", with the claim that the latter will feel like a mere time capsule 40 years on while the film will remain unencumbered by such baggage.

So, uh, yeah: DUNHAM IS EVERYWHERE.

50 Shades of Greil (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 27 October 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

weirdly i think that obama ad is the first time i've actually seen her, despite having heard -about- her for a while.

that's true of me and she's a year older than me (but i don't pretend to know how lena dunham learned what a blowjob was)

quincie, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

it kinda reminds me of ironic-bad-taste, when people are aware of the social gravity of making racist jokes or whatever but feel entitled to do it as if they're playing with the form, or meta-commentating on society or something. like ~the point~ is that the open disdain is meant to be amusing, in its unnuanced expression, but it's performing the exact same function as someone just way too personally trash-talking her, using the few tired criticisms of the show as a crutch, i think.

gawker/cook distinction probably otm
