the new york times' creepy old uncle

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Friday, 12 October 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

But then Twitterstorms are a cast-iron guarantee of misrepresentation and bullshit all round so there's that too.

Get wolves (DL), Friday, 12 October 2012 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

Someday a real Twitterstorm will come and wash all this scum off the streets.

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Friday, 12 October 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

and then gawkers gotta go and do this http://gawker.com/5951031/andrew-goldman-is-not-a-misogynist-and-neither-am-i

i mean.

That was ridiculous. I know the dude is friends with Goldman and was trying to stick up for him, but there's no way Goldman would have asked any of those type of questions to a man.

And calling someone stupid because they enjoy reality television is nagl, especially when gawker covers reality tv extensively.

controversial cabaret roommate (Nicole), Friday, 12 October 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

I know the dude is friends with Goldman and was trying to stick up for him,

exactly why he should have been the last person to write that piece

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Friday, 12 October 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

Each one of those Goldman questions makes a certain sense in isolation, as the NYT argued, but when there are three of them you have to think there's a problem.

Get wolves (DL), Friday, 12 October 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

that goldman article is terrible

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Friday, 12 October 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

That Cook piece is really bad.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Friday, 12 October 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

its just like that thing where you get drawn into a messy muck over a bad thing and you keep swinging and you keep sinking. in a week or something it will feel awful to have written it, i bet.

s.clover, Friday, 12 October 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

like if that twitter convo had been on ilx we would have gone well past *lock thread* from the peanut gallery.

needed another pass by a subeditor but fascinating reading

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

Good job, Walter Cronkite.
You exposed personal details about a guy who has done nothing illegal.

just fucking ugh

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

fair story, well done. there is an ethical issue w. "outing" ppl's online handles and hangouts and linking it to their real names in general, I think. like this came up on ilx the other week. but in this case, given the person and situation, and like who he is and what he's done, it's obviously legit, and the story is for the most part not trying to incite a mob or anything, but just sort of marveling at the whole thing. That said, revealing the dude's real name doesn't really help the story as a story, as far as I'm concerned, outside of adding a pageview-grabbing sensationalist touch. Which, ok, fine, you're a blog, you want hits.

s.clover, Friday, 12 October 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

if outing this fucker makes even one asshole out there think twice before posting sexualized pictures of unwitting under-aged girls for other creeps to drool over, then net gain imho

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

the stuff about his relationship w the admins is totally fascinating

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

this reads less as an outing than "this week on american life, ever wonder about who cleans up crime scenes? sarah koenig profiles a guy who does just that. Also an update from dishwasher pete, plus an interview with a guy who calls himself, and I'm not making this up, violentacrez"

Philip Nunez, Friday, 12 October 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

He told me he close [is - sic] with a number of early Reddit employees—many of whom have now moved on—chatting with them on IRC or sometimes even on the phone. A few years ago, while Jailbait was still going strong, Reddit's administrators gave him a special one-of-a-kind "pimp hat" badge to honor his contributions to the site, which he proudly displayed on his profile. Brutsch said he was even in the final running for a job as a customer support representative at Reddit last year.

er whoops i put my correction in the wrong spot

there is no dana, only (goole), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

the tone of the article is more casual and familiar than one you'd expect to be "journalist drops public safety news bomb"

Philip Nunez, Friday, 12 October 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

it was never really supposed to be a "news bomb" -- the reddit Freak Out has kind of changed the whole story, which was always supposed to be the sort of TAL-tone, "profile of weird internet guy"

between the accumulation of power through inter-mod battles / aggressive usefulness to admins and the immediate offer to gawker to "do anything" as a "spy" within reddit (no idea what he thinks gawker might want to know about reddit) this is some successful-sociopath shit (or i guess not really all that successful)

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

not really sociopath either; dude just didn't want his extracurriculars to cost him his job (you could in fact argue that his reaction is the epitome of being highly socialized)

do sociopaths not care if they lose their jobs

anyway of course i am not diagnosing and "shit" there was supposed to mean "behavior" as opposed to "character"; charming and bargaining and making yourself indispensable; people w capacity for empathy do that kind of stuff all the time too of course but they don't necc also devote all their free time to publicizing sexy pictures of children; it's just interesting to try and think your way into people like this

let's not give ira glass credit for inventing the profile
