i sometimes work in ICT classes and not saying gif out loud wd make the class unnecessarily circumlocutory

thread lock holiday (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

if you are a software developer, get a tattoo that says "gif" on your palm and flash it instead of saying the word out loud

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

This just reminds me of the confusion resulting for anglophone students of French that, in the French alphabet, J is 'gee' and G is 'jay'.

Wenie, weedie, weekie...

The windiest militant trash (Michael White), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

haha, related: an (anglophone) friend of mine was trying to help her francophone, yet quite anglo bilingual boyfriend pronounce the word JENGA and after trying a few times, he declared "This word is full of traps!"

I don't pronounce it, as such:

http://www.scoutingresources.org.uk/img/codes_semaphore_001.gif

I guess it's sort of pronounced "whoosh"?

Old Lunch, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

only sentence i've ever used it in, likely only with fellow ilxors irl: "oh that reminds me of that animated gif.../have you seen that animated gif..."

The Seinfeld i just watched had this appropriate exchange...

JERRY: <Looks at the owner's manual.> Owner's manual...you know what? This car was owned by Jon Voight.

GEORGE: Ah! See? I told ya.

JERRY: Except Jon is spelled with an H. J-O-H-N.

GEORGE: So?

JERRY: Doesn't Jon Voight spell his name J-O-N?

GEORGE (pulls over): So, what are you saying?

JERRY: Nothing. I'm sure "Jon" probably mispelled his own name. I know sometimes I spell Jerry with a G...and an I! <Laughs uproariously.>

"giff" is "correct" so I voted for it but in practice "jiff" is usually funnier to say.

back in the late nineties i said "jiff," then switched to "giff" when a friend convinced me it was right, and then the same friend found out how the creators pronounced it and we BOTH switched to "jiff." that's enough word-based peer pressure for one lifetime.
