I was trying to think of a comeback to say to that statement but then I thought, her name is Bristol, and her mom is Sarah Palin, she's probably suffered more than enough in life.

swing state polls >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> national polls
― stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, October 8, 2012 4:17 PM (6 hours ago)

it's the second poll with romney ahead. but yeah, the national polls aren't very importart.
― obamana (abanana), Monday, October 8, 2012 4:18 PM (6 hours ago)

I'd have to double-check, but I'm pretty sure Silver has always said that polls at the national and state level move together, though they might not be perfectly in sync--one leads the other, but the idea that this and that state stay static while other states begin to move noticeably doesn't work. This Michigan poll would seem to bear that out:

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/poll-romney-narrows-gap-in-michigan-following-debate

No, I'm not Sullivan saying it's over, not at all. But this may be the equivalent of those few days in 2008 when McCain temporarily caught up. Last time it happened in September, and only lasted a few days.

clemenza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah national polls are conducted more often and by more people so the state polls should lag behind the shifts in the national ones. Basically behind by 4 points in national polls= very bad news. But he was up 5 in gallup's monday poll so who the fuck knows what's going on.

The thing I'm having a hard time getting my head around is that a single debate could have such an effect--especially one that, no matter how tepid you thought Obama was (no argument here), didn't involve a gaffe, didn't involve some endlessly repeatable soundbite from Romney, didn't involve much of anything except Romney exceeding very low expectations. Do people have their minds changed that easily?

clemenza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

"Who the fuck knows what's going on"--works for me.

clemenza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

lag00ns link upthread addresses that - its not so much millions of people who changed their minds and more that republicans got pumped up

There is a republican "documentary" called "Obama's America" showing at the local megaplex... Gotta love that Citizens United ruling.

Yeah, that'd be Dinesh. we've been over him before.

he is also missing a sizable chunk of gray matter, as evidence by his videos.

Mitt Romney declines to participate in Nickelodeon’s ‘Kids Pick the President’ special

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/tv-column/post/mitt-romney-declines-to-participate-in-nickelodeons-kids-pick-the-president-special/2012/10/08/534f210c-119a-11e2-ba83-a7a396e6b2a7_blog.html

The only other presidential candidate to do so in the special's run? John Fucking Kerry.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

Typical response to Sully's hysterics (which at least Sullivan posted):

Nate Silver is on the front page of the Times saying that the trend (job stats up, likability strong) will hold. So for the first time since I can remember - the Bush years maybe? - I closed my Dish tab. I cannot bear the stress of this election. And in particular, now, I cannot bear your wailing about the polls.

does anyone have the How many dead brown civilians equal murdered Big Bird chart, or is MoveOn still working on that?

cancer, kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

Can Alfred or someone start General Election #3? This one's getting unwieldly for those of us who don't use bookmarks. Also, we're now into the final jumping-out-of-windows phase.

clemenza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

no, we'll enter that when the EC tie throws it into the House.

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

the big bird obama ad is funny but i think they should really leave that kind of snark to the bloggers and youtube whizzes--the message will get out, but they won't appear frivolous by spending people's campaign contributions on LOLsnark ads.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 04:32 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's an interesting strategy, actually, and I'm not sure that it appears frivolous.

timellison, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:00 (thirteen years ago)

lol too frivolous for the sober environment of this elevated dialogue
